This work was commissioned by the Scottish Chamber Orchestra to celebrate its 25th anniversary. The first performance was given on 3rd December 1998 at Queen's Hall, Edinburgh, by Lisa Tyrrell (Soprano), Margaret McDonald (Mezzo), Neil Mackie (Tenor) and David Wilson-Johnson (Baritone), the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus and Orchestra. Peter Maxwell Davies: The Jacobite Rising (Vocal Score)

A work for SATB soli, SATB chorus and orchestra, using a variety of texts, selected by Alistair Grant, who commissioned the work to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the Jacobite rising (1745-6). It was first performed in October 1997 in Glasgow by Lisa Tyrrell (soprano), Margaret McDonald (mezzo soprano), Neil Mackie (tenor) and David Wilson-Johnson (baritone), the Scottish Chamber Orchestra Chorus (chorus master Ben Parry) and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, conducted by the composer.Vocal score with piano reduction of the instrumental score. Peter Maxwell Davies: Into The Labyrinth

A cantata for tenor and chamber orchestra, with words from The Well by George Mackay Brown and a German translation by Gunther Bauer Schenk. The centre-piece of a chamber orchestra trilogy (see also Sinfonia Concertante and Sinfonietta Accademica) and is a symphonic song-cycle in five continuous movements. The text ponders the influence of modern times on ancient ways of life.Into The Labyrinth is the second of a set of three works for chamber orchestra written in 1982-3, and is the only one using voice. The first performance took place in June 1993 in St. Magnus' Cathedral, Orkney, as part of the St. Magnus Festival. It was given by Neil Mackie and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra conducted by James Conlon.Score (miniature). Duration c. 31mins.
