Grabstein Für Stefan Op 15C

Grabstein Für Stefan Op 15C

This piece, written in memory of Stephan Stein in 1989 for guitar solo and chamber ensemble, grew out from sketches made in 1978-79.At the core of the musical texture is a choral-like sequence of guitar chords occasionally completed or interrupted by chordal or melodic commentaries of other groups of instruments. An essential element of the composition is the placing of various groups of instruments at different points of the room. Thus, space functions as a type of acoustic filter, similarly to the majority of Kurtág's instrumental pieces around 1990. The physical distance at which the notes and the groups of notes sound is of decisive importance. The music producedfarther away is not necessarily softer because its energy is felt: we are aware that even if it sounds farther away it is of great intensity. What sounds closer, on the other hand, is not necessarily the most important at the given moment of the process. It is as if space were observed through lenses of differing magnifying forces or if the air around us were felt thicker or thinner by our skin. It depends on the nature of the musical texture whether we still take notice of the directions or we are captivated by the sound that suddenly fills the room (as, for example, at the dynamic climax of the piece when gas horns and whistles join).Grabstein für Stephan represents an exceptional phase in Kurtág's lifework. Even if he has compositions of similar tone (for example in the series Games for piano) or similar solutions (in some of the other pieces of op. 15 or the Twelve Microludes for string quartet) the relaxed mood and the narrative character of Grabstein stand without precedence. It seems as if a composition of aphoristic brevity were enlarged here. The gestures are more extended, with much more time left for them. In this way, the larger form does not emerge as constructed from mosaics but viewed from the angle of the whole as the attention focuses on one or another motif.

Mick Riddell: Edith's Wartime Scrapbook

Mick Riddell: Edith's Wartime Scrapbook

All year round musical for 7-11 yearsRunning time 60 minutes approx.Whilst moving out of the house in which she has lived for 80 years, Edith Coleman discovers an old scrapbook from her childhood. The turn of every page rekindles memories of a time when war affected every aspect of her daily life. But despite the perils of the Blitz, evacuation, rations and bossy ARP wardens, we learn of how families and communities cared for and supported each other, found comfort and humour in their unusual circumstances, and ultimately triumphed in the face of adversity.Whether you are looking for a rousing school musical to swell the hearts of your cast and audience, or a comprehensive curriculum resource that educates and entertains, ?Edith?s Wartime Scrapbook? is all you could wish for, and more!Plot summaryWhilst moving out of the house in which she has lived for 80 years, Edith Coleman discovers an old scrapbook from her childhood. The turn of every page rekindles memories of a time when war affected every aspect of her daily life, and these memories are eagerly recounted to the removal people helping her, and to us the audience. (song ? Wartime Memories)Firstly, we find ourselves in the front room of the same house, but at the outbreak of the Second World War. The Coleman family discusses the fact that, although war has been declared, nothing much seems to be actually happening! The only real use that Fred (Edith?s scamp of a younger brother) can find for his gas mask is to make rude noises with it! (song ? This Phoney War) However, as the days and weeks progress, Fred and Alice (Edith?s younger sister) find themselves at the train station, bidding an emotional farewell to their family as, along with lots of other children, they are evacuated. (song ? Journey On A Train) Edith?s older brother, Sidney, will also be catching a train. He, however, will be travelling abroad to fight for his country, much to the worry of his parents. The Blitz has ended the phoney war with a bang! As ARP wardens patrol (song ? Put That Light Out), local residents gather in the air-raid shelters. We hear of how rationing and those dreaded powdered eggs are the blight of their lives, but also how everyone is pulling together and literally digging for victory! (song ? Keep Our Spirits Flying) Women are flocking to the factories and onto the land to keep the nation armed and fed (song ? Women At War), and the ?old boys? of the Home Guard are doing their bit too, if rather comically, to aid the war effort! (song ? We Are The Home Guard)As the USA enters the war, the young ladies are very excited at the arrival of American soldiers in Britain. At the dancehall we learn that, although popular with the female population, these charming visitors are seen as more of a threat to the local lads than Hitler himself! (song ? Hollywood Girls) However, the harsher realities of the war are made apparent as we witness Sidney caught up in the fighting at Arnhem. He and his comrades, fearful for their lives, take a moment to write what could be their last ever letters home. (song ? Will You Be There?) Will Sidney make it back, and will the Coleman family be reunited? With the end of the war and VE celebrations in full swing, we understand that victory has come at a cost. Yet the overwhelming feeling is one of hope, and an appreciation of the enduring spirit that enabled famil
