Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad

“Twisted Blues with Twisted Ballad” is Turnage’s second string quartet. Because of the ‘intimidating repertoire’ of the string quartet, he decided to approach the medium from a different angle. Like two other works from the same period (“Grazioso!” and “Out of Black Dust”), this piece reflects the influence of the British rock band Led Zeppelin. The first movement, “Twisted Blues”, is a continuous fantasia on some of the component parts of an early Led Zeppelin song, “Dazed and Confused”, with consistently loud dynamics, heavy attacks, percussive pizzicatos and moments of distortion.The second movement, “Funeral Blues”, is a contrasting interlude unrelated to the music of LedZeppelin, though consistent with its surroundings in its rich bluesy harmonies and an improvisatory quality of melodic writing.The final movement, “Twisted Ballad”, is based on one of Led Zeppelin’s most well-known numbers, “Stairway to Heaven”. Following the structure of the original, the movement begins quietly and simply, and gradually gains in tempo and excitement towards a vehemently aggressive climax.

At less than 20 years of age, the youngest son of the Leipzig cantor of St. Thomas, Johann Sebastian Bach, withdrew from the Lutheran musical tradition of his family: Johann Christian Bach went to Italy, converted to Catholicism there and composed mainly Latin church music between 1757 and 1760. His great successes with operas for Turin, Milan and Naples from 1761 onwards led him all the way to London. Bach’s church music comprises a number of vespers compositions, some of them large-scale, including this Magnificat a 4 (1760) for soloists, choir and orchestra. The very diversified work gets its additional attraction from distinctively led oboes and horns.

Sounds, Shapes and Symbols : Four Movements for Band

Bassett wrote Sounds, Shapes, and Symbols in 1978 for the University of Michigan Symphony Band on a commission from its conductor, H. Robert Reynolds, who led the premiere performance on March 17. It was Bassett’s second piece for wind band,after 1964’s Designs, Images, and Textures. Sounds, Shapes, and Symbols is in four untitled movements, each of which creates a unique, non-melodic soundscape by juxtaposing distinctive sonorities and textures against each other.

Nobles of the Mystic Shrine

Sousa composed this march at the request of his nephew, who was sponsoring his uncle's entrance into the Ancient Arabic Order of Nobles of the Mystic Shrine in 1922. The following year, the march received its premiere in Washington D.C., under the largest band ever led by Sousa, comprised of no fewer than 6,200 Shriners. This medium-level arrangement by Charles L. Booker, Jr. makes this classic march more accessible to bands, with scoring for modern instrumental forces and transposition to an easier key.

Franz Joseph Haydn: String Quartets Volume VIII, op. 64 [Second Tost Quartets]

The quartets were dedicated to the violinist Johann Tost, who was the second principal violinist at the Esterházy court during the 1780s. His business sense led him to sell twelve quartets - opus 64 was probably amongst them - to a Parisian publisher. Whether Haydn approved of this is open to question - the dedication was, however, no longer present in the second imprint or the following ones. Our edition follows the Haydn Complete Edition and for the first time juxtaposes the quartet in E flat major and the two original trios.

Rolande Falcinelli: Initiation à l'Orgue (Organ)

French organist, composer and pedagogue, Rolande Falcinelli (1920-2006) studied at the Paris Conservatoire where her teachers included Henri Büsser and Marcel Dupré. Falcinelli led a successful career and therefore, her  Initiation À L'Orgue  is very well-informed. Falcinelli 's  Initiation À L'Orgue  was compiled in 1971 and addresses features including a description of the console, general positioning, notation, the pedals, articulation, textures, the different sounds, performance directions, transitions between manuals and fingerings, among many other aspects. For all organists seeking to improve their technique, Falcinelli 's  Initiation À L'Orgue  will ensure progression.

Frederick's Black Devils : (March of the First Special Service Force)

During World War II, Winston Churchill initiated the formation of Special Force Commando Units that would prove so effective as to change the course of the war. The First Special Service Force, led by their intrepid Colonel, Robert T. Frederick, was perhaps the most famous of these units. Due to their ferocious nature and blackened faces for night raids, the fearful Germans gave them the nickname The Black Devils. In 2015 they were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal, the highest honor the U.S. government can bestow. Frederick's Black Devils is a stirring concert march that pays tribute to this legendary unit.

Timofei Dokchitzer: Trumpet Method

Russian trumpeter, Timofei Dokchitzer (1921-2005) studied at the Moscow State Conservatoire and soon became one of the most outstanding trumpeters in the world. His excellence on the instrument led him to compile his Trumpet Method which has aided the studies of many aspiring trumpeters. Dokchitzer 's performing career saw him play both classical and modern concertos. His distinctive style is thought to have been influenced by his love of opera. Trumpet Method seeks to address preparatory exercises, incorporating a range of musical features, Vocalises, which aid the progress of legato intervals, and Sequences which enable practice of technique. For all aspiring trumpeters, Dokchitzer 's Trumpet Method is an essential aid to technical progress.
