Choral Works : Béla Bartók Complete Critical Edition Volume 9

Daphnis and Chloe : Symphonic Fragments - 2nd Suite

The Golden Age of the Xylophone

The Graces of Love : Le Gratie d'Amore

The Graces of Love : Le Gratie d'Amore

“The Graces of Love” (Le Gratie d’Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milan court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune Il bianco fior (The White Flower) on which the first movement of my piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune Vaghe bellezze ... (Veiled Beauty …). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied anddeveloped. Finally, the third movement contains a Saltarello based on a tune by Vincenzo Galilei, the father of the famous astronomer, Galileo Galilei. It brings the work to a close with a hypnotic rhythm which is noble and virtuosic at the same time. “The Graces of Love” (Le Gratie d’Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milanese court in the Renaissance. 1834 : Machera Impressions

1834 : Machera Impressions

The twofold title of this concert work is directly connected with the band who commissioned it. The ‘Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher’ from the town of the same name, by the river Moselle in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg was founded in the year1834. The name Machera is derived from the word machara, which in turn originated from maceries (old wall). Later, Machera evolved into Machern, Grafenmachern, and finally Grevenmacher. In 2009, this music society the third oldest still in existence in the country celebrated its 175th anniversary. And after all these years the society still flourishes! The dynamic committee, led by Georges May, fully supports and inspires themusical leader of the band, Claude Weiland, as well as his 60-strong ensemble. This well-functioning team took the initiative to ask Jan Van der Roost to write an anniversary composition, inspired, on the one hand, by the rural character ofGrevenmacher and its surroundings (where the famous Moselle wine growing dominates the countryside), and on the other hand, by the dynamics, creativity and joie de vivre the band exudes. All of this resulted in a twofold work with alternating peaceand excitement, virtuous and melodic features, orchestral splendour and soberly orchestrated passages. The première, on 10 January 2010, was conducted by the composer himself at a successful gala concert which brought a fine year full of musicalfestivities to a close. The ‘Harmonie Municipale Grevenmacher’ faces the future with confidence, and will now prepare for its next milestone: the 200th anniversary!

Ballet Music

Ballet Music

This volume is the second of three planned volumes of ballet music composed between 1759 and 1769 in Vienna. They represent only a small portion of Viennese ballet music attributed to Gluck for which musical sources have been preserved. The volumes form a compendium that offers comprehensive editorial coverage of Gluck’s activities as “Compositore von der Music zu denen Balletten” (composer of the music to the ballets). The present volume contains compositions from the years 1759 and 1760 (and, accordingly, the 1759/60 and 1760/61 seasons). The ballets have been passed down only as sets of parts. They were commissioned by Count Joseph Adam Prince of Schwarzenberg andoriginated around the time of the premiere performances from the workshops of Viennese copyists. Today, they are housed in the State Regional Archive Ceský Krumlov (with the exception of the sinfonia for “Le Prix de la Danse”, which has also been handed down as a composition by Ignaz Holzbauer.)The ballet music works consist of a series of mostly short but occasionally lengthier movements that can be repeated or joined into larger musical units. “Les Corsaires” and “Le Prix de la Danse” were both premiered in December 1759 at the Kärntnertortheater in Vienna with choreographies by Charles Bernardi, while Gasparo Angioloni most likely created the choreographies for “Le Berger magicien”, “Les Miquelets espagnols”, and “Le Naufrage” (premiered in 1759 at the Burgtheater), as well as those for “Les Faunes” and “Les Trois Couleurs” (premiered in 1760 at the same venue). The two Bernardi ballets are the only examples for which scenic descriptions have been recorded in the chronicle of theatrical performances by court dancer and ballet master Philipp Gumpenhuber. However, telling titles and works with similar contents help to reconstruct the thematic orientation of the respective ballets.

Works for piano for four hands : Serie VII: Klaviermusik Band 4

Works for piano for four hands : Serie VII: Klaviermusik Band 4

Carl Maria von Weber‘s fame rests mainly on ‚Der Freischütz‘. The unprecedented success of this opera overshadowed all his other works and contributed to their increasing fall into oblivion. Certain works such as ‚Preciosa‘, ‚Oberon‘, and ‚Euryanthe‘, the overtures, solo concertos and piano sonatas, the lieder and chamber works enjoyed great popularity and were widely known in Germany and abroad as late as the second half of the 19th century. However, any chance of a revival of Weber‘s influential and substantial oeuvre was wasted in the 1920s, when a complete edition begun by Hans Joachim Moser and with potential contributors including Wilhelm Kempff, Hans Pfitzner, Max von Schillings, Fritz Stein and Richard Strauss failed after the third volume. Ever since there have been numerous attempts to restart a complete edition of Weber‘s works, but as this kind of project would have required the co-operation of scholars from both sides of the inter-German border, the political situation after 1945 was not conducive to any such enterprise. Careful negotiations led to the first tangible steps in the 1980s. The intention, right from the beginning, was to place Weber’s work in context, and not to separate his musical output from his influential work as a writer, critic and organiser in the musical field, but to publish his compositions together with his letters, diaries and other literary output as the best way to document the cross-fertilisation between his musical, literary and practical activities. Since the German re-unification both working-parties concerned at the Staatsbibliothek zu Berlin, and at the Musikwissenschaftliches Seminar, Detmold/Paderborn have co-operated on the complete edition of the musical works (c. 45 volumes in 10 series: sacred music; cantatas, odes and other occasional works; stage works; lieder and vocal works; orchestral works; chamber music; music for piano; piano reductions; miscellanea, arrangements and orchestrations; works of doubtful attribution). The diaries (6 8 vols.) are edited in Berlin and the letters (8 10 vols.) and other writings (2 vols.) in Detmold. This complete edition aims to be a reliable basis of scholarly debate as well as for the authentic performance practice of Carl Maria von Weber‘s music. Conforming to the standards of recent historico-critical editions, the textual material will be based on all available authentic sources, accompanied by a detailed documentation of the genesis and a list of variants for each work. The musicological importance of the works will be evaluated by placing them in their historical context, the presentation of their genesis, history and Critical Commentaries. The letters, writings and diaries will be treated as inter-related and relevant to each other in the commentaries, therefore readers should benefit from a wealth of concise information and cross-references. The present volume brings together Weber’s autonomous works for piano duet. These compositions include the Six petites pièces faciles op. 3 (1803), the Six pièces op. 10 (1809), as well as the Huit pieces op. 60 completed in 1819.
