Marche Slave is one of Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s most popular and well-known pieces, frequently performed by orchestras of all levels throughout the world. It was commissioned by the Russian Musical Society in 1876 to benefit the Red Cross Society and support the benefits of wounded Serbian veterans. A very programmatic composition, it depicts the events surrounding the Serbo-Turkish War (1876–78), where Russia openly supported Serbia. Henri Vieuxtemps wrote in 1880 ‘In any case, I' ve already written my funeral march, it exists!’ Whether this refers to the sketches preserved in the Royal Library of Belgium entitled Marche funèbre. Adieux adressés un grandhomme can' t be known for certain. Vieuxtemps’ Funeral March for string quartet, however, is undoubtedly an enrichment of the quartet repertoire and can now be offered as a serious point of repose in concerts and competitions, andlikewise at funeral services. The parts contain both the Urtext version and a thoroughly elucidated version as a suggestion for performance.

The Earle of Oxford's Marche

William Byrd (1543—1623) was one of the leading composers of the late renaissance. He was known for his polyphonic songs, consort music, virginal pieces, and music for both the Roman Catholic and Anglican churches. The Earle of Oxford’s Marche was originally composed for the virginal (a popular chamber instrument similar to the spinet or a much smaller harpsichord).
