Apocalyps II

Apocalyps II is an abstract piece of music with a conventional structure (ABA-coda). The work is very energetic, the only rest being a quite short chorale-like middle section which is quickly followed by the finale again rushing ahead at full speed. The composer expresses anger and fire alternating with joy and energy by means of the enormous colourful movements.

Into the Unknown - From Frozen II

Composers Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez have once again written music for Disneys sequel film Frozen II after great success in 2013 with Frozen. Many will probably remember Let it Go which became a big hit from this movie. The new movie continue to follow the main character Elsa, who sings her amazing musical number “Into the Únknown” in Frozen II. The song describes Elsa's inner conflict of choice to leave Arendelle or trace the source of a mysterious voice she continues to hear. The song is originally sung by Idina Menzel and the Norwegian artist Aurora and has elements and motifs inspired by Scandinavian herding calls. As always, the music is both magnificent and captivating and will surely be a hit for many years to come.

Bulgarian folk music has a long tradition and numerous typical characteristics, such as particular dissonances and complex, irregular rhythms. In Bulgarian Dances (Part II) (which can be performed together with the previously published title Bulgarian Dances) Franco Cesarini has preserved the original spirit of Bulgarian folk music, yet has imbued it with a symphonic character and brought it into the concert hall. The three different movements give us a meditative, moving folksong and a lively dance, before a distinctly symphonic part leads to a glittering finale.

T-Bone Concerto, Part II - Medium

The T-Bone Concerto was Johan de Meij's first composition for solo instrument and symphonic band. It consists of three movements called respectively 'Rare', 'Medium' and 'Well Done'. In addition to the solo trombone, an important role has been allotted to a kind of chamber music ensemble within the band. This group introduces new thematic material and accompanies the soloist, thus creating a delightful transparant accompaniment. The ensemble consists of a double wind quintet (2 flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 french horns and 2 bassoons) plus a cor anglais and a double bass. Part II is written in the A-B-A form and allow the soloist to display both the technical and the lyricalcharacteristics of the instrument. Part III at first develops into a kind of neo-baroque style using the thematic material of the first and second movement, and finally leads to a triumphant finale and a virtuoso conclusion.

Gian-Carlo Menotti: The Medium (Cloth Full Score)

Purcellian Fantasia : based on the march from Henry Purcell's Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II

This composition is based on the march from Henry Purcell’s Music for the funeral of Queen Mary II, a work written in 1694. In this fantasia, various movements flow from one to the next following the main theme; these movements not onlyelaborate on the theme, but also contrast with it. At times, the thematic material diverges so much, that the work acquires a character of its own; however, the composer often refers back to fragments of the theme.

The Lord of the Rings (II) - Lothlorien

Johan de Meij’s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The movements are: I) GANDALF (The Wizard)II) LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood)III) GOLLUM (Sméagol)IV) JOURNEY IN THE DARK a. The Mines of Moriab. The Bridge of Khazad-DûmV) HOBBITSThe symphony was written in the period between March 1984 and December 1987, and had its première in Brussels on 15th March 1988, performed by the “Groot Harmonie-orkest van de Gidsen” under thebaton of Norbert Nozy. In 1989, The Symphony The Lord of the Rings was awarded a first prize in the Sudler International Wind Band Composition Competition in Chicago, and a year later, the symphony was awarded by the Dutch Composers Fund. In 2001, the orchestral version was premiered by the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra.AM 02-010: LOTHLORIEN (The Elvenwood): The second movement is an impression of Lothlórien, the elvenwood with its beautiful trees, plants, exotic birds, expressed through woodwind solos. The meeting of the Hobbit Frodo with the Lady Galadriel is embodied in a charming Allegretto; in the Mirror of Galadriel, a silver basin in the wood, Frodo glimpses three visions, the last of which, a large ominous Eye, greatly upsets him.

Volume 23, the penultimate volume in Series II of the complete edition contains free arrangements by Liszt dating from between 1859 and 1861. The best-known among these are the three Verdi opera fantasias: the Miserere du Trovatore, Ernani and Rigoletto, together with the two Wagner transcriptions: the Spinnerlied aus Der fliegende Holländer and the Fantasiestück über Motive aus Rienzi. The volume also contains two transcriptions each from Berlioz and Lassen, and one each from Bach, Meyerbeer and Dietsch.
