Storm And Urge

Edward Fairlie's Storm And Urge is a significant work for Wind Band and portrays a journey of emotional turbulence. The title comes from the German “Sturm und Drang,” a literary and musical movement ofthe late 1700s which focused on extremes of emotion. Amazing Grace

After he had survived a heavy sea storm, John Newton (1725-1807), captain of a slave ship, became a priest and from then on he fought for the abolition of slavery. During his tenure he wrote several hymns, of which Amazing Grace certainly is the best known. The melody assumedly derives from a song by the African slaves. Takashi Hoshide has written a compelling arrangement of this beautiful melody.

Short Ride in a Fast Machine : from: Two Fanfares for Orchestra

Composed in 1986, this fast-paced and dynamic work took the symphonic world by storm. Available here in a playable setting for school ensembles; Richard Saucedo has transposed the key down a third from the original and skilfully adapted some of the more complicated rhythmic patterns without sacrificing any of the excitement and drive. The symphonic poem ‘Loch Ness’ consists of five through-composed impressions of this mysterious Scottish Lake. I) The Lake At Dawn - calm, static, sonorous blocks depict the troubled opaque water surface and the enormous depth of the Lake at daybreak. II) Slowly the rising early-morning mist reveals the distant ruins of Urquhart Castle, represented by a solemn theme in the trombones which is taken over by the full band, thus evoking the illustrious past of this fortress besieged so many times. III) Inverness: Bagpipes and Tourists - the music takes us down to the town of Inverness where the first tourists mark the slow but steady start of a new season to the sound of a Scottishmelody. IV) Storm - suddenly a heavy wheater breaks: fierce gusts of wind and heavy showers transform the erstwhile calm surface into an obscure and whirling mass of water, and clouds rapidly passing over offer an eery scene... V) Conclusion - storm and rain gradually decrease and when everything is quiet again we are granted a last view of the Lake in its full glory.

Fanfare del Popolo

Fanfare del Popolo - fanfare of the people - is a reminder of the terrible periods of fascism and dictatorship in world history. It describes a revolution of the oppressed against the tyrant. The people storm the bastions of the dominion and take their fate into their own hands. This fanfare was commissioned by the Symphonic Band Vorarlberg and its conductor Thomas Ludescher. It is dedicated to all people who currently have to live in countries under dictatorship. This item makes an ideal opening work for any concert.

The Lord of the Rings (I) - Gandalf

Johan de Meij’s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The first movement is a musical portrait of the wizard Gandalf, one of the principal characters of the trilogy. His wise and noble personality is expressed by a stately motif which is used in a different form in movements IV and V. The sudden opening of the Allegro vivace is indicative of the unpredictability of the grey wizard, followed by a wild rideon his beautiful horse “Shadowfax”.

The Lord of the Rings (V) - Hobbits

Johan de Meij’s first symphony The Lord of the Rings is based on the trilogy of that name by J.R.R. Tolkien. This book has fascinated many millions of readers since its publication in 1955. The symphony consists of five separate movements, each illustrating a personage or an important episode from the book. The fifth movement expresses the carefree and optimistic character of the Hobbits in a happy folk dance; the hymn that follows emanates the determination and noblesse of the hobbit folk. The symphony does not end on an exuberant note, but is concluded peacefully and resigned, in keeping with the symbolic mood of the last chapter “The Grey Havens” in which Frodo andGandalf sail away in a white ship and disappear slowly beyond the horizon.
