Festive Rock

The contemporary Lithuanian composer Kazys Daugėla created Festive Rock in celebration of the 2003 Lithuanian national holiday. The premier took place at a concert with not one, but two concert bands being eluminated by the many colours of a concert closing firework display. This unforgettable event led to the piece’s popularity among concert bands. Now it can also become a part of your repertoire with or without fireworks!

Schreker: Das Chorwerk

Franz Schreker had a long and close association with choral music. As founder and director of Vienna's Philharmonic Chorus he led world premieres and first performances of works by contemporary composers. It is surprising, therefore, that Schreker wrote relatively few independent choral works; only three of these works [with various scorings] were published in his lifetime. Now, for the first time this critical edition, prepared by Christopher Hailey, director of the Franz Schreker Foundation, makes available a body of works that sheds new light on Schreker’s musical evolution and, in its own right, constitutes a notable addition to twentieth-century choral literature.

The African sound of Bert Kaempfert

The composer, arranger and band leader Bert Kaempfert is considered a giant in the field of easy listening music. He wrote songs for world renowned stars such as Ella Fitzgerald, Peggy Lee, Shirley Bassey, Anita Kerr, Frank Sinatra and many others. He created his own unique sound with the Bert Kaempfert Orchestra and had huge international success. His affinity with ‘black music’ is significant and his fascination with South African sounds led to their incorporation into several of his compositions and arrangements. Roland Kernen has used the following well-known tunes in this medley: Zambesi, African Beat, Wimoweh, Happy Trumpeter and Skokiaan.

The Patriots : Symphonic Fantasia for Brass Band

The Dutch patriottentijd (literally ‘Time of the Patriots’) was a period of political instability in the 1780s. The country was led by regents who were occupied with their own personal interests rather than dedicating themselves to the needs of the people. In this revolutionary period, the devoted republican Patriots were in conflict with the Orangists. A civil war followed, in which the Patriots were beaten and driven away by a Prussian army. This composition is an abstract piece inspired by the Patriots. The thematic material is based on the Dutch war song ‘Merck toch hoe sterck’. Its powerful minor melody, which has its origins in the Eighty Years’ War, isrecognizable throughout the work, presented in variations of constantly shifting character. Marche au Supplice

Hector Berlioz (1803-1869) once remarked: “My life is a novel that greatly interests me.” Experiences in his personal life had a great influence on his compositions. Symphonie Fantastique, written in 1830, is also autobiographical: he subtitled the work Episode in the Life of an Artist. The symphony echoes his feelings for an actress. The Marche au Supplice (march into torture) he described as: “The artist dreams he has killed his beloved, that he has been sentenced to death and is being led to the scaffold. The procession moves to the notes of a march that is now sombre and turbulent, now radiant and stately, and in which boisterous outbursts suddenly dissolve intothe heavy sound of marching feet.”

Quiet in the Land : Poem for Orchestra Full Score

Originally written for flute, clarinet, English horn, viola, and cello in 2003 during the invasion of Iraq, Quiet in the Land asked how quiet the spirit of our land might be with the inconclusive harmony of the piece to suggest an ambiguous answer. Fourteen years later, disquiet in the land has led to a return to this, and the scale of an adequate musical response now demands the expressive and coloristic palette of a full symphony orchestra. Some of the structure and a few fragments of the original composition survive in the orchestral work of the same title, and the harmonic language remains ambiguous. Composed especially for the Phoenix Symphony, Tito Munoz, Music Director withthe generous support of the Phoenix Symphony Commissioning Club.

Dance of the Knights from Romeo and Juliet

March of the Robot Army

March of the Robot Army was commissioned by Linda Anzolin & Giordano-Bruno Tedeschi for Campobanda 2019, with funds made available by JUST ITALIA. Campobanda is an Italian summer music camp for 8- to 18-year-olds (held inCamposilvano in 2019) which has a different theme every year. The theme for 2019 was ‘science fiction’, so composer Philip Sparke chose to write a robot march. After a quirky introduction featuring trumpet calls and chromaticfigures, the main theme appears in a minor mode on clarinet and tenor sax and is then taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a new theme, led by the trumpet and again repeated by the full ensemble. A further change ofkey introduces a legato ‘trio’ melody over a rather robotic accompaniment: instruments are added bit by bit until a climax is reached. Small motifs from the introduction then lead back to a full recapitulation, revisiting thefirst two themes in new guises before finishing the march with a flourish.

Kaija Saariaho: Lichtbogen (Score)

The Full Score of Kaija Saariaho's Lichtbogen For Nine Musicians and Live Electronics. The title for this work stems from the composer's experience of seeing the Northern lights whilst starting work on writing the piece, this experience also shaped the form and language of the piece. Lichtbogen was the first time Saariaho had worked with a computer in the context of purely instrumental music, this new compositional element led to harmonic material being created by analysing short transitions played with a violin and cello, starting with artificial harmonic sounds and ending up with complex multi-phonic sounds. The rhythmic elements of this piece were created using a network of computer programmes, allowing the composer to construct interpolations and transitions for different musical parameters, rhythmic interpolations created through sets of musical patterns that are repeated but each time slightly modified in character. Lichtbogen is the commission of the French ministry of culture and is dedicated to Paul Mefanc. A splendid work for Ensemble (Flute, Percussion, Harp, Piano, 2 Violins, Viola Cello, Double Bass) and Live Electronics by this inimitable Finnish composer.

Lacus Flevo : Van Zee en Wolde

Lacus Flevo refers to the former Lake Flevo, a large inland water of centuries ago, which was located roughly where the Dutch province of Flevoland now lies. It was one of many lakes that were created at the end of the last ice age, after the retreat of the glaciers. In the first part of this concert work, the unspoiled nature of this lake from earlier times is atmospherically depicted. Throughout history, there have been various interventions to reclaim the land for agriculture and habitation – the Zuiderzee Works are the best known and most fundamental example. This complex set of projects led to the creation of the province of Flevoland, where Lake Flevo was once situated. This transition is depicted in the second movement of the composition, by a powerful theme that leads to a grand finale. This composition was written for the fortieth anniversary of the village Zeewolde in Flevoland, as well as the music society AMVZ, also celebrating its fortieth jubilee. Waltzes

Waltzes, a cycle of twelve virtuoso waltzes for violin, viola, cello, and double bass, was commissioned by the Spoleto Festival USA in Charleston, where the first nine waltzes were premiered in 1981. Soon thereafter I composed the final three waltzes. The violinist Rolf Schulte led the first performance of the complete work in New York City in 1983. Waltzes lasts about 22 minutes and is dedicated to the violist Scott Nickrenz, who directed the chamber music series at Spoleto. In arranging the commission, Mr. Nickrenz made three stipulations: make my modernist idiom accessible for summer-festival listening, provide a challenge for brilliant string players accustomed to 19th-centuryrepertory, and give the piece a loud ending. The idea of composing a set of waltzes came from the pleasureI took in playing waltzes by Schubert and Chopin at the piano. Waltzes incorporates occasional references to the music of past composers, but always in ways that fit within my own musical language. Its instrumentation for “low” string quartet is reminiscent of Schubert’s Vienna.

They produced leaflets protesting against the National Socialist government of Germany in 1942-3 until they were arrested and guillotined.?Soar to Heaven? follows two characters, Wu and Zhou, involved on opposite sides of the Cultural Revolution in China.?The Oxford Revolution? tells the story of James Meredith, who fought a lonely battle against segregation and racial prejudice to become the first black student to enrol at ?Ole Miss?, the University of Mississippi, in the USA.Librettist's Note.There are, inevitably and properly, some differences between the original libretto and what Max ultimately set to music. Most of these are insignificant, but all the Latin texts in the opera were added by Max, and texts for the alternating black / white choruses (Scene 19) and final chorus (Scene 28) were written by him.

No musical family has made such a significant contribution to the history of European music as the Bach family from Thuringia, in Saxony. From the 17th through 19th centuries one finds outstanding musicians among the family who participated in all levels of musical life whether it be town, court or church music their works span all genres of vocal and instrumental music and reflect the stylistic developments of the individual eras in which they lived. Within the framework of the Bach-Repertorium research project at the Sächsische Akademie der Wissenschaften zu Leipzig, thematic catalogs are being compiled for all members of the Bach family. With catalogs which includeincipits, texts, tables and indexes, the compositions will be described using a unified set of criteria and they will be based on the latest musicological research. To distinguish him from his brothers, in the 18th century Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach was known as the “Bückeburger” Bach. His extensive opus encompasses all genres of instrumental and vocal music. Systematic research has led to the rediscovery of a number of works previously believed to have been lost, as well as to works which until now have been completely unknown; furthermore the existence of other lost works also has been verified. Thus today, for the first time an overview of the creative output of the second youngest Bach son is possible, which now occupies its own independent position in the history of 18th century music.

Surrounding countries were also involved in such practices. Colonizers poached on each other’s territories in the literal and figurative sense - in this context the Anglo-Dutch Sea Wars are legendary. The fourth movement starts with the English patriotic song Rule Britannia, after which the Dutch Admiral Michiel de Ruyter makes the English change their tune; one can even hear the roaring of cannons. When the smoke of battle has cleared, a small fragment of a Dutch song about Michiel de Ruyter appears, followed by a fitting closing.
