The Life of a Samurai : The Japanese Spirit of Toshizou Hijikata

Satoshi Yagisawa chose as the theme of this work the subject of Bushido, the fundamental Japanese code of samurai chivalry, and depicts the life of a heroic and passionate samurai knight of the 19th century. The Japanese-sounding mood can be furtherenhanced by the optional use of Japanese instruments such as drums and bamboo pipes.

Based on the hauntingly beautiful Sunayama, this composition tells a story of the inner conflictof a Japanese girl who falls in love with an American. She is torn between a life with him in America and her longing for the culture of her childhood. From time to time she plays a music box given to her by her parents(Sunayama theme), bringing a flood of homeland memories. T-Square is a Japanese jazz fusion band that was formed in 1978. They became famous in the late 70s and early 80s, amongst other Japanese fusion bands. One of their most popular songs is Omens of Love. This beautiful Concert Band arrangement from Toshio Mashima is played all over the world.

Little Tokyo Suite

Little Tokyo Suite is a work in three movements for wind ensemble, with a flexible 10-part orchestration suitable for concert band or fanfare band. It portrays the "Japantowns" established by Japanese emigrants around the world. They are often called "Little Tokyo", in reference to the capital of Japan. The three movements each focus on a region with such a Japanese community. This suite is dedicated to the concert band of the conservatory of the 12th arrondissement of Paris, whose conductor is a lover of Japanese culture, and to Mochizuki Junior High School, Saku City (Nagano, Japan). They premiered this work, 10,000 km away from each other, in 2022.

Homage : Guardians of the Sea

This work was commissioned by the Japanese Maritime Self Defence Force Band, based at Kure City, Hiroshima, Japan, to celebrate their 60th anniversary. The composer used a passage from Kosaku Yamada’s Umi No Sakimori (Sakimori of the Sea), ceremonial music of the Maritime Self-Defence Force. The result is Homage, expressing Yagisawa’s respect for Yamada and his work—a tribute to a composer whose legacy includes a large number of Japanese songs.

March-Bou-Shu

This work was commissioned by the All Japan Band Association (Chiba Prefecture) to commemorate their 45th anniversary. The composer, Satoshi Yagisawa, was requested to write a march that was easy enough for junior high school students to play, and was based on the folk songs in Chiba Prefecture. After several months of research the composer finally discovered Boushu Oiwake, a lyrical folk song sung with the Japanese bamboo flute and shamisen (three-stringed Japanese instrument). After the composition process has been completed we have here a fantastic triumphant march sure to ?raise the roof? at any performance.

Stand Alone

Joe Hisaishi is a highly sought-after film score composer in his home country of Japan. Among his numerous movie scores are several for anime fi lms. Anyone who watched the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics heard his work, whether they knew it or not, as he composed the music for the opening ceremony. Stand Alone is an emotional song written for a Japanese TV-series, recorded by none other than Sarah Brightman. (She even sung in Japanese!) Joe Hisaishi’s music can now be enjoyed by an even wider audience thanks to this arrangement by fellow countryman Jun Nagao.

At the Mambo Inn

The Japanese arranger Toshio Mashima has made a swinging arrangement for concert band of At the Mambo Inn. With the accompaniment of a large percussion section, the right note has been struck and the Latin American mambo is expressed well. Swing it out!

I Remember Clifford

The well-known American jazz musician Benny Golson (b. 1929) worked with great names like Benny Goodman, Dizzy Gillespie and Lionel Hampton. He wrote a number of jazz standards, including I Remember Clifford. The Japanese composer/arranger Toshio Mashima has produced this exciting arrangement of this jazz classic for trumpet and concert band.

Voyage : Flight into a Hopeful Future

This opening piece by Japanese composer Satoshi Yagisawa expresses joy, gratitude, hope and courage. The three sections are performed without interruption. We hear ‘Joy’ in the brilliant introduction, ‘Gratitude’ in the chorale-like middle section and ‘Courage and Hope’ in the closing section. A fantastic new addition to the Grade 4 repertoire for Concert Band.

Centenary Celebration

Centenary Celebration was written for the 100th anniversary of the Hiroshima Junior and Senior High School in Japan. This work, in the typically radiant, lyrical style of the Japanese composer, is especially suitable for all kinds ofanniversaries and ceremonies. The first movement can be performed separately to open a concert, while the second movement serves as an encore.

Grand March

‘Grand March’ was composed in 1995 for the All Shizuoka Youth Band of Japan. The piece opens with a majestic fanfare. A superb-sounding march, with a commanding character, follows. The talent of this Japanese composer reveals itself in the distinctly lyrical character of the trio section, which contrasts wonderfully with the first lyrical themes of the score.

Sousa March Carnival

Naohiro Iwai has produced a swinging arrangement of four well-known marches by John Philip Sousa: The High School Cadets, El Capitan, The Thunderer and The Stars and Stripes Forever. This top Japanese arranger whimsically chose toincorporate a touch of samba and cha-cha into these American marches. The result is a sparkling medley of classics in a refreshing new context.

Morricone Medley

Ennio Morricone has written over 500 scores for fi lm and TV and is one of the most famous composers in the world. The Japanese arranger Ritsu Ono compiled a medley with popular and less popular songs written by this famous Italian composer: Nuovo Cinema Paradiso, The Crisis, Playing Love, Danny’s Blues and the 1900s Theme. A must play for every Morricone fan.

Suite from Miss Saigon

The musical Miss Saigon has touched millions of hearts worldwide. This is partly due to the romantic, yet equally tragic, love story set in war-torn Vietnam during 1975, and partly to the emotional and engaging music by Claude-Michel Schönberg. Masamichi Amano’s medley for concert band combines the songs: The Heat Is on in Saigon, Kim and Chris, Dance, If You Want to Die in Bed and Bui-Doi.

Symphonic Episode I

The title's meaning is two-fold: as a letter, I stands for the Japanese Iwata Band Association. As a number, I represents Satoshi Yagisawa's hope that this is only the first in a future series of works. Symphonic Episode Iprovides rich contrast between its various slow and fast sections, with the slow movement exemplifying Yagisawa's great ability to write warm and emotionally inspired music. L'Amico Fritz

When you say Mascagni you immediately think of Cavalleria rusticana. This work brought Mascagni overnight fame after his wife - without him knowing - entered the score in a composition contest and it won first prize. Cavalleria rusticana became an incredible success, overshadowing the premiere of his next opera, L’Amico Fritz. L’Amico Fritz can still be considered a successful opera, with its highlights being the ‘Cherry Duet’ and this intermezzo, arranged by the Japanese Kimura.

Symphony No. 2 - Views of Edo

Edo is the ancient name for the city of Tokyo. Inspired by a series of woodcuts by the artist Utagawa Hiroshige (1797-1858) entitled 'One Hundred Famous Views of Edo', Cesarini’s symphony is based upon a few traditional Japanese melodies. The composition is divided into five movements in arch form: a structure in which the individual sections are arranged symmetrically around a centre. Each movement takes its title from a print from the 'One Hundred Views'.
