Constructed between 1915 and 1928, the Tamiami Trail (U.S. Highway 41) provides over 260 miles of scenic Florida beauty between Tampa and Miami. On the Tamiami Trail reflects on this journey, and pays tribute to the Suncoast Concert Band of Sarasota (along the trail) and its director emeritus, Leo Laier. The opening fanfare sets the mood and leads to the energetic first theme. Subsequently a Latin influence is introduced along with an expressive middle theme before returning to the energetic flavor of the opening strains. A dynamic and varied overture for winds. Dur: 6:15

Iditarod : Third Movement of Portraits of the North

The annual Iditarod Trail Dog Sled Race between the Alaskan cities of Anchorage and Nome covers 1,049 challenging miles of jagged mountain ranges, dense forests and windswept coastlines. This amazing feat of endurance was theinspiration for Iditarod. In cinematic fashion, the point of view cuts from long-shots to close-ups (from the dog's view to the eagle's), constantly moving forward with a relentless pulse. With a brief respite, a majestic,sweeping theme is introduced and develops. And then - back to the race! With renewed energy, the dogs race the final stretch; the music building and intensifying to the very end. Iditarod was commissioned by the WestVancouver Youth Band to commemorate the band's 80th anniversary. Take your audience on this exhilarating ride! Dur: 5:35

Christopher Palmer: Herbert Howells A Study

Herbert Howells is a giant of 20th century Anglican church music, the remainder of whose oeuvre is in the process of gaining new appreciation. This short – 88 pages in total – book includes an interview with the composer, sensitive and expert probing of the influences on his work with many examples included for illustration and a list of Howells’ principal works. The book is widely considered a trail-blazing study, a work of essential reading for those intrigued by the work of this composer.As well as being a writer on music and a biographer of musicians, the author Christopher Palmer was himself a most accomplished composer and arranger. He was extremely highly regarded as a symphonic Orchestrator, both of film scores and of symphonic suites based on the legacies of other composers.The book has an introduction by renowned Choral conductor Sir David Willcocks.

On Recollecting

These songs were commissioned by the Mohawk Trail Concerts in Charlemont, Massachusetts in honor of Ruth Lloyd Black, their co-founder. The first performance was on August 30, 2015, soon after her death. My recollections of Ruth over some sixty years of friendship were a mixture of laughter and tears. She was a tireless advocate of chamber music, a fine musician, and possessor of a delightfully British sense of humor. Emily Dickinson has her tongue firmly in her cheek in these poems. There is serious purpose under the lyrics, but the surface is pure word-play. She juggles the terms “forgetting” and “recollecting” in each poem until they almost take each other’s meaning. The firstpoem may have accompanied a gift of flowers to a grieving neighbor: she shares the grief, but assuages it with humor. The first statement of “blithe” fingers should be happy, the second drenched in sorrow. I love the way the second poem opens like a puzzle: is she forgetting to remember, or remembering to forget? In either case, it ends with the touching image of a lost child. She continues to confuse us in the third song: is it sunrise or sunset that is “the other one?” The setting sun is her subject in many wonderful poems: here, she would rather “die divinely” in glorious color (echoes of Sarah Bernhardt?) than merely wane away. -Alice Parker
