SOMA is a first-person survival horror game developed by Frictional Games (known from hits such as Amnesia: Dark Madness or the Penumbra series), for PC, PS4 and XONE. The action of the production takes place in the underwater PATHOS-II center, inspired by heavy science fiction, and is full of confrontations with monsters and artificial intelligence that evoke a feeling of fear and entrapment. The creators also touched on the topic of the importance of human consciousness or the survival of civilization in the face of a catastrophe, which brings to mind the treatments known from The Talos Principle.SOMA presents the story of Simon Jarrett, who, as a result of a combination of certain events, ends up in the PATHOS-II research center built on the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean. It soon turns out that the complex has been taken over by an artificial intelligence that has killed all of its employees, and Jarrett, revealing the secrets hidden by the facility, has to get out of its area. In the story, the place of Hollywood twists is replaced by an exceptionally dense, unpleasant and suspenseful atmosphere, which is the hallmark of the creators, and the narrative is characterized by interactivity and an emphasis on the protagonist's ability to communicate with the robots he meets. In addition, the story is deepened by the philosophical and religious threads appearing in it, referring, among others, to the story of the biblical flood, issues related to the limits of human morality or one's own identity.In the game, we observe the events from the first-person perspective, and the gameplay itself is divided into exploration, logical and survival sequences. During the first ones, we travel through individual sectors of PATHOS (marked with successive letters of the Greek alphabet) and the sections of the ocean floor connecting them, we can search drawers, cabinets or desks, as well as listen to recordings scattered around the game world and read e-mails that allow us to obtain information important for understanding the plot. .The logical elements are mainly related to solving simple puzzles in the form of various mini-games and searching individual rooms in order to obtain items and improvements that will allow you to gain access to the next levels.The survival aspect has been developed the most, offering close encounters with various types of monsters, most often hidden in the tightest rooms of the center. We can only run away from danger or hide in corners, using measures that distract individual opponents to our advantage. However, getting us by the monster does not mean immediate death, because Jarrett's health can be regenerated by using quite grotesque, interactive "first aid kits". SOMA for PC, PS4 and XONE also offers densely placed checkpoints, so we don't have to worry about accidentally losing progress.
