Paul West and I have exchanged gigs, laughs, hugs and handshakes down through the years. Al and I have played together with Blossom Dearie and countless others with great satisfaction and mutual admiration. Richard and I have recorded several albums together and Lisle's wife is a friend of mine that I had not heard play before, and I am smiling at the results... Great!! Ron Carter.

Blues fans may already feel they know Andrew Big Voice Odom from the records he cut with Black & Blue and Delmark, or through his European tour with The Chicago Blues Festival in 1974. However, to really get to know him, you'd have had to have heard him at the various ghetto clubs in Chicago, the Checkerboard, Pepper's, the South Louise Lounge or, as is the case here, at Ma Bea's, where he spent most of his evenings.

In many ways this recording is a dedication to all the pianists who have meant so much to me. A European tour with Miriam Makeba in 1970 had brought Parlan to Copenhagen, where four off-days gave him time to look around the city. He liked what he saw and two years later he settled down in Copenhagen. Horace Parlan enjoys playing solo Piano ? but hasn?t had the chance to do it all that often. Parlan?s aim in making this CD was to give highly personal interpretations of compositions which he has cherished over the years but which have not been over-recorded. He says: "I am not a Tatum ? I have to make the material fit my particular style and I spent quite a bit of time working on the arrangement. I wanted to do a reflective CD ? no racehorse tempos, no pyrotechnics ? and also make the harmonic structures as interesting as possible."

One of Denmark's most prominent bassists, J esper Lundgaard formed his own jazz trio in 2004 along with Hans Ulrik (Tenor Sax) and Niclas Knudsen (Guitar). The trio describes their music as a playground where they try out new compositions and pay homage to great icons in the history of Jazz. The  Jesper Lundgaard Trio 's album 2016 contains recordings of 8 original compositions written by each band member and an updated version of two standards: “ The meaning of the Blues ” by Bobby Troup and “ Naima ” by John Coltrane. The music is fresh, lyrical and blues oriented with a gentle touch of Nordic folklore. “ This album investigates some blues aspects, reflecting the times and our personal impressions. Not every theme is strictly a blues progression, but they all have a bluesy feel. We have tried to create an intimate, dry and intense album, utilizing a minimalistic approach ” says Jesper Lundgaard .

The 15 tunes (69 min.) on this CD were recorded live in concert in Denver, Colorado, in 1966. Six of the numbers have never been previously released; the rest were originally released on LP on the Pumpkin record label. Don Ewell plays stride piano, strongly influenced by Jelly Roll Morton and Fats Waller. The repertoire on the CD is based on compositions by the great stride pianists Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller and Earl Hines.Don Ewell did not do much recording and therefore, as prominent jazz journalist Alun Morgan says: "We are fortunate to have this (CD) representing Don Ewell at his best." Ewell, himself, was very pleased that night in Denver, Colorado; everything was right:the atmosphere, the piano, the recording and, not least of all - the band and the music. Besides being a great stride piano player, Ewell could definitely play the blues - just listen to his version of "See See Rider" on this CD

This 57-minute CD (12 tunes) includes four numbers that have never previously been released. The recording (originally released on Metronome and later on a Storyville CD) was made in the recording studio in Copenhagen in 1965. The four extra tunes are from a radio broadcast the same year, with a different rhythm group. Besides Svend Asmussen, both sessions also feature another major jazz violinist, Stephane Grappelli, who first played with Asmussen in 1938. The musical material consists of popular swing standards by Duke Ellington, Fats Waller and George Gershwin, among others, plus one be-bop tune by Bud Powell.Svend Asmussen plays here with all the elegance, charm and perfection that have been the trademark of his music for many, many years. Two of the top jazz violin-pros in the business, Grappelli and Asmussen obviously enjoy each other?s playing and respect each other as musicians. The music swings like mad, not least of all thanks to a fantastic Danish rhythm section, led by bassist Niels-Henning Ørsted Pedersen and drummer William Schiøpffe. These two live 'Jubilee' radio shows were made in 1943 specifically to entertain the U.S. military during World War II, and have never before been released on CD. The first show features Louis Armstrong and his big band, plus the Red Callender Trio; the second show features the Count Basie Big Band and the Art Tatum Trio. The repertoire on this 19-track CD consists mainly of the greatest popular swing and trad-jazz hits of these two top big bands. The Count Basie Band features four great stars: Harry "Sweets" Edison and Snooky Young on trumpet, Don Byas on tenor sax, and Jimmy Rushing on vocals. One of the high points of the entire CD is Art Tatum's rendition of "Exactly Like You". These Jubilee shows give today's listener a valuable sampling of the swing-oriented black entertainment world of the mid-1940s. After decades of having these performances only available in piecemeal fashion, usually on bootleg LP's with inferior sound, it is a joy to have the opportunity to hear this timeless music as if it were being broadcast on the radio today.

The Golden Years Of Revival Jazz Volume 5: Papa Bue

Part of a series of re-releases of Storyville?s traditional jazz repertoire, recorded from the beginning of the 50?s and into the 60?s. It all started in 1950 when Chris Barber came to Denmark. We introduced Chris to The Ramblers, and I even succeeded in persuading Memory/Danish Vogue to record 4 titles. In the following years (1953 - 1963) Storyville?s 'artist-agency', Jazz Jamboree, booked a number of English artists for tours in Denmark: Ken Colyer, Chris Barber, Cy Laurie, Graham Stewart, Sandy Brown, Lennie Baldwin and Bob Wallis among others. These CDs contains the result of these visits that have been immortalized either in the studio or by concert recordings. Much of this material has not seen the light of day until now. The Danish bands were recorded at the same time : Papa Bue, Adrian Bentzon, Henrik Johansen, Bohana, Ricardo, Arne Birger, Theis-Nyegaard, etc. We have chosen to let the basis for the series be 45 EPs. In this way the 15 CDs, which the series contains, each start off with 3 EPs by 3 different artists. To that is added unreleased titles or material from earlier 45s and compilation LPs, so every CD represents 5-7 different bands.

Of the five Radio sessions represented on this release, four of them contain Stuff Smith teaming up with fellow violinists Ray Nance and Danes Svend Asmussen, Søren Christensen and Poul Olsen, three of these have never been released before.On April 4, 1965 Stuff Smith participated in a radio jubilee concert. Only recently has a mislabeled, long thought lost tape been recovered from the Timme Rosenkrantz archive. The astute listener will question the absence of drummer Alex Riel. There was confusion about the start time of Smith's set following an interval and Riel failed to appear. Thus, we have a rare glimpse of a late Smith trio with just Piano and Bass. Riel, as good a drummer as he is, is really not missed. And that's Stuff tapping on the violin? In an act of generosity, Smith introduces "Timme's Blues" as written by his friend and manager Timme Rosenkrantz. The Danish Jazz Quartet 's second album On The Road... features new live music from some of Denmark’s most prominent and longest standing jazz musicians. The six tunes featured on this record have long proven their worth as vehicles for improvisation, be it in jam-session or more organised contexts. Here, they sound as fresh as ever, played by four musicians who obviously enjoy playing—and sharing. The four members of the Danish Jazz Quartet first met while playing on the Danish jazz circuit in the 1950s-1960s. The band consists of Søren Kristiansen (Piano), Jesper Lundgaard (Double Bass) and Alex Riel (Drums), all of whom have been visible all over the Danish jazz scene for many years, as well as frontman Leif Juul Jørgensen , who is just returning to the professional jazz scene again (and it’s about time!) The friends began to play some gigs together in 2012 and, during an intermission, drummer Alex Riel said: “ I think we should make this quartet a permanent one. The chemistry among us is just great ” - and so they did. The collaboration's first record 'Just Jazz' was released in 2014 on Storyville Records. The way the trio accompanies Jørgensen not only demonstrates their lifelong versatility, it also reflects their sincerity and love for the music. The band all carry their history with them, being thoroughly familiar with just about all aspects of jazz.
