The shades and tones of Tim's arrangements show a gentleness and true understanding for the music.Likewise the Dutch Wizard, Ton Van Bergeyk brings his own touch and humor to two original ragtime oriented instrumentals. Ton's command of the steel string guitar is very impressive. His arrangements combine many elements and clearly show his love for the music of Scott Joplin to Glenn Miller! Ton has recorded several solo albums on as well as being heavily featured on the album I Got Rhythm (SGGW133).Lasse Johansson adds another approach to ragtime guitar with his four solos. His version of Creole Belles is very interesting and demonstrates how successfully a brass band arrangement can be adapted to the guitar. It is also interesting to hear this composition as one of the sections has become very popular through the playing and recordings of Mississippi John Hurt.Lasse's duets with Claes Palmqvist are fine examples of the art of duet guitar arrangements.Together they have created delicate and yet spirited version of two well known rags. Both arrangements are highly successful and each adds a different dimension to their collaborations.This collection is an exciting tour de force in ragtime guitar. Duck, Ton, Tim, Claes and Lasse are truly masters of this style. And as usual the guitar players who are eager to try to pick up these tunes will have a happy time with the PDF tab/music booklet that has been prepared to go along with this project and can be found on the CD. Ton Van Bergeyk: Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar - Volume 2 (Book/3 CDs)

Ton Van Bergeyk launched his career as a musician during the late 1960s playing blues Harp and Ukulele in a duo setting, but he then switched to the acoustic Guitar and quickly learned and mastered the instrument using fingerstyle techniques. He started to transcribe and arrange classic ragtime compositions for fingerpicking Guitar and was discovered by Stefan Grossman during a tour in Holland. Stefan produced Ton's first solo album, Famous Ragtime Guitar Solos, in 1973. This contained 14 of Ton's arrangements of classic ragtime pieces and became a best seller. In 1975, Ton's second solo album, Guitar Instrumentals To Tickle Your Fingers, was released containing transcriptions and arrangements of novelty rags, early jazz and popular tunes of the 1930s and 1940s. In 1980, Ton's third solo album was released and continued his exploration of arrangements for solo fingerpicking Guitar, this time with a repertoire covering jazz, blues, contemporary pop and country and even Mexican folklore. This album was titled Lulu's Back In Town, Hot Guitar Solos. Ton also participated in several anthology projects, i.e. Novelty Guitar Instrumentals, I Got Rhythm, Masters of Ragtime Guitar, The Entertainer and How To Play Ragtime Guitar. All of Ton's albums are available as CDs as well as direct downloads from Stefan Grossman's Guitar Workshop, (www.guitarvideos.com) and include tab PDF booklets on the CDs. Ton recorded the audio lesson series Fingerstyle Jazz Guitar to teach phrase by phrase and measure by measure some of his most requested arrangements. The golden age of African fingerpicking guitar was in the 1950s and 1960s. The great players and recording artists of that time included Jean Bosco Mwenda and Losta Abelo from Zaire and George Mukabi from Kenya. Guitarists from other parts of the world have rarely if ever had a chance to learn their songs and playing techniques. On this DVD their arrangements are taught by John Low, who has lived, worked and studied with African musicians, including those mentioned above. There are some interesting links with American guitar styles but there are just as many differences, including rhythms borrowed from traditional African music and catchy up-beat patterns. African fingerstyle guitar is usually accompanied by rhythms played on a bottle. John Low is accompanied on this DVD by Frans Maathuis and Keith Jackman on bottles.
