This hymn concertato begins with a lovely flute and organ introduction which quotes the tune (ST. COLUMBA) with some elaborations. This through-composed setting moves peacefully through the moods of the text, with a unifying element of gentle triplets in the accompaniment. The tonal center changes as if to center on each "blessed" and then, midway, settles back into D major for a calm but assuring conclusion. Duration: 4:00

Voluntary on Thaxted

A majestic fanfare gives way to the melody played on the solo Great. A flowing interlude follows in a minor key on the Swell strings, building to a restatement of the opening material, a full maestoso setting of the melody with big crashing chords, and again, the fanfare material to close the voluntary. Paraphrase on "Thine Is the Glory"

The original organ piece by Alexandre Guilmant makes a great tour de force for brass and organ. Varied, whimsical, and celebratory, the arrangement puts the melody through various paces, including a brief fughetta. Ending, as it should, with a broad final statement of the melody completely intact, this would make a great finale or postlude. Duration: 4:00

A brand new melody graces this beloved text. Four stanzas, the first two handled by the women and men, respectively. The third stanza is contrasting material, in parts. After a short preamble, the soaring, original melody is passed back and forth between the women's and men's voices, "I am the resurrection and the life." The middle, contrasting section has the voices singing homophonically, and then the alternating material returns. A coda reminiscent of the preamble contains the title text. An easy, effective anthem which is useful at several points in the liturgical year. Duration: 4:30

The 1806 text is given a lyrical treatment rather than the usual rollicking one, and the result is expressive and effective. The first stanza is in unison, the second split between TB and SA alternating. The third stanza is set for SATB voices. The fourth and final stanza has lower voices in unison and sopranos descanting. To First Seek the Kingdom

This is the kind of piece that might sound more difficult than it is. Michael Trotta employs an economy of choral writing: The SATB parts are sometimes unison, move often by steps, are repeated in the outer sections, and have only occasional divisi in the treble voices. The text is an innovative combination of Old and New Testament passages, put in a question-and-answer format with the question sung in a subdued matter and the answer intensifying in range, complexity, and volume. The piano and flute parts flow more quickly than the voices—save for a short, contrasting middle section—and provide an underlying momentum to this expressive work. Duration: 4:30

Two Pieces for Organ : Prelude in D and Exultation

Prelude in D, written for organist David Ball, is set in a languid 3/4 with a lyrical motif in the melody which passes through several harmonic developments but is consistently soothing and satisfying. Registration suggestions might be for a large instrument, but the elegance of the writing insures success on a smaller instrument as well.
