Kaija Saariaho: Il Pleut

This 1985 work by Kaija Saariaho is a short and unusual piece that sets a text by Guillaume Apollinaire for Soprano and Piano or Harp. Sparse and delicate in texture, the Piano follows a simple non-rhythmic flurry of notes that trigger and accompany the voice in counterpoint. The result is a more complex flow of tones that seems to free fall around the ears. Composed by commission for the tenth anniversary of the Jasemusiikki Publishing House.
