Herbert Howells was an English composer, organist, and teacher, most famous for his large output of Anglican Church music. However, for this reason his secular compositions tend to be unreasonably neglected. This edition of the Fantasy String Quartet has set out to change this. The delightful piece of chamber music makes full use of the unique characteristics of String instruments, giving all four players equal parts and opportunities to shine – separately as well as together as an ensemble. Possibly inspired by Vaughan Williams’ Phantasy Quintet, the Fantasy String Quartet requires skilful mastery of their instrument from each player. Performance time is ca. 13 minutes.

The Brook Green Suite for strings was written in 1933 during Holst's stay in hospital (where he later died in May 1934). He composed this piece for his pupils - the junior orchestra at St Paul's Girls School - as wanted to write a piece in a contemporary mature style that was easy enough for his them to perform.Available here is the score and parts with string parts 5.5.3.3.3. and optional flute, oboe, clarinet in B flat and bassoon parts.
