Beloved, Let Us Love One Another

Written for the Choir of the Church of the Advent in Boston, Massachusetts (Dr. Edith Ho, director), this piece was composed for the wedding of John Sterling Lambert and Susan Tighlman Bisson at the Advent on October 12, 2002. The bride and groom are both singers who have worked closely with the composer, and the composer and choir offered this short work, drawing on various wedding and musical texts, as a gift to the couple during the wedding liturgy.

The Heavens Declare the Glory of God : From Music of the Spheres

This is the first movement (Prologue) of a five-movement work featuring texts by Johannes Kepler, John Donne, and the Psalms. Dedicated to Swiss astrophysicist Arnold Benz, a relative of the composer, the work is based on melodic ideas written to be overlaid with images of various constellations. "The Heavens Declare" is a setting of Psalm 19: 1-4, in which tenor soli and SATB choir alternately declaim the text in a call-and-response structure.

How Lovely Is Thy Dwelling Place

Commissioned for the 100th anniversary of Lakewood Congregational Church, Lakewood, Ohio. The text is drawn both from Psalm 84 and two additional verses written by the late poet John Stirling Walker. The anthem features interludes based on the tune AURELIA (“The Church’s One Foundation”) by Samuel Wesley. The final verse includes the congregation singing this tune as a descant accompanying the original music. Duration: 7:00 Brass Quartet parts include: B-flat Trumpets I and II, Trombones I and II

American Death Ballads

American Death Ballads was composed especially for tenor Brian Thorsett. We have been frequent collaborators since 2011, when he premiered the complete set of my Three Settings of W. B. Yeats for string quartet and tenor. At his urging, I transcribedand published my Three Poems of Christina Rossetti (originally for medium voice) for high voice, which he premiered at the San Francisco Conservatory in 2014. American Death Ballads was premiered by him at the San Francisco Conservatory, November 1,2015, with pianist John Churchwell, and at the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) Conference in Chicago, July 10, 2016, with pianist Warren Jones

The King Shall Come When Morning Dawns

Commissioned to honor Ken and Diane Ketel for their many years of music ministry at First United Methodist Church in Rapid City, South Dakota. Scored for mixed choir and organ, this Advent anthem sets a Greek hymn text translated in 1907 by John Brownlie. The overall musical form is ABABA (and a short coda), with the "A" section essentially being a newly-composed Common Meter (86.86) hymn tune. Gentle multi-meter is applied throughout and serves to underscore the natural scansion of the text. This anthem was the 2018 winner of the Sewanee Church Music Conference Choral Composition Prize. Night Prayer

The text of Night Prayer was written by the Rev. John Williamson in 1987 for inclusion in A New Zealand Prayer Book. The tone of the prayer is both traditional and contemporary. Its natural and intended use is as Part of the Compline service, the final service of the day in the Christian tradition of canonical hours. This setting is in a reverent, chorale style, rising to a climax with the words, 'Let us look to a new day, to new joys, and to new possibilities.' Night Prayer was commissioned by Good Company, a chamber choir based in Cleveland, Ohio, and was premiered on May 15, 2016. Duration: 4:30
