House Of Chester - Centenary Album

The compositions in this album have been specially written by eminent composers to mark the Centenary of the House Of Chester, who have had the honour of publishing their works during past years.Homage is paid to the late Manuel De Falla, so closely associated with the Chester edition, by the reference made to him in the works of the contributors to this book.

Peter Maxwell Davies: House Of Winter

House Of Winter is a setting of four Christmas poems by George Mackay Brown, for AATBBB or SATBBB a cappella choir. The music is continuous, and though scored for unaccompanied voices, it becomes almost orchestra in its evocation of the calm, frozen stillness of an Orkney winter on the one hand, and the wildness of a December storm on the other.The setting is largely homphonic, in Davies?s 'adult' modal style and with a characteristic inventiveness of vocal scoring, as in the storm sequence, with its whistling upper voices and eruptive bass line.The first performance took place during the tenth St. Magnus Festival as part of a concert given by The King's Singers in Kirkwall in June 1986.Vocal score with piano accompaniment for rehearsal purposes.

Glass The Fall Of The House Of Usher (e) Libretto

American composer Philip Glass is widely known as one of the most celebrated, influential and prolific of the modern composers. He is frequently referred to as a minimalist, though he prefers to call himself a composer of ‘music with repetitive structures.’ His operas, among them the renowned Einstein On The Beach, are performed across the globe, and he has created work for small and large ensembles, film and experimental theatre, and founded his own performing group, The Philip Glass Ensemble. The Fall of the House of Usher was given its premiere in 1988.Writer and director Arthur Yorinks has worked in opera, theatre, dance, film and radio as well as writing thirty-five books for children. His goal is to create a new theatre of sound for the 21st century. Yorinks also collaborated with Glass on his opera The Juniper Tree. Both works have been performed internationally.

Fragile

This short work by the Master of the Queen's Music, fragile, was commissioned as part of William Howard’s ‘Love Song’ project by Nicholas and Jane Ferguson for their 40th Wedding Anniversary. It was first performed by William Howard (piano), at Leighton House Museum, Holland Park, London on 23rd May 2017.

James Whitbourn: Gratias Agimus Tibi

Gratias Agimus Tibi is a work by James Whitbourn for Unaccompanied Voices (in any combination), with an optional 'Amen' for SATB Choir and Organ ad lib. A setting of Latin text by Nigel Palmer, the work was composed for the college grace of St Stephen's House, Oxford. Please note that the lyrics are in Latin.

Water Dances (Version for 2 Pianos)

Water Dances is a work scored for two pianos from 2011. Much of the work is an arrangement of the music written for the Michael Nyman Band for Peter Greenaway's 1984 film Making a Splash. The two-piano version was recorded by theLabèque sisters for their CD Minimalist Dream House on the KML/Deutsche Grammophon label.

Lennox Berkeley: Sonata No. 1

Lennox Berkeley 's Sonata No. 1 for Violin and Piano. Written when Berkeley was studying with Nadia Boulanger, this sonata was premiered by Yvonne Astruc and Madeleine Grovlez for the Société musicale indépendante at the Ecole normale de musique in Paris on 4 May 1932. The work is dedicated to Gladys Sophia Bryans, an elderly admirerof Berkeley who died in 1951. She lived at Rudge House, Painswick, Gloucestershire, and her house parties included Berkeley and Britten when they were working on their joint orchestral suite, Mont Juic in 1937. The first recording of this Sonata, along with No. 2, Berkeley ’s official Op. 1, was made in 2013 by Edwin Paling and Arabella Teniswood-Harvey on Move MD3361. Their performing score has been consulted for this first publication which has had the support of the Lennox Berkeley Society. The source is a manuscript in a copyist’s hand now at the British Library.

Rachel Portman: Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis

Rachel Portman's Magnificat And Nunc Dimittis  for SATB choir and Organ accompaniment. Born in west Sussex, England, Rachel Portman began composing at age 14 and read music at Oxford University. She gained experience writing music for drama in BBC and Channel 4 films including Mike Leigh's Four Days In July and Jim Henson's Storyteller series. Her extensive film work includes scores for Never Let me Go, The Joy Luck Club, Benny and June, and the Manchurian Candidate. She won an Academy award for her score for Emma and Academy nominations for Chocolat and The Cider House Rules. She has written a musical of Little House on the Prairie as well as an opera of Saint Exupery's The Little Prince for Houston Grand Opera and The Water Diviner, a dramatic choral symphony commissioned for the BBC Proms concerts. She was appointed Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the 2010 New Year Honours.
