Rapture : for Clarinet in B flat and Tape

Rapture was composed for Australian clarinetist, Eileen Mack and was premiered at Symphony Space in New York City with live visuals created by Joshue Ott and his custom program, superDraw.In performance, the live clarinetist is processed in real time with a combination of effects often associated with electric guitars; namely distortion and reverb. The transformed sound of the clarinet is supported with an intense tape part that comprises vocal recordings and recordings of Mack playing sounds, which range from sustained tones to multiphonics. In a similar process to painting, these recordings were then spliced, manipulated and layered to create the music of the tapepart.In 2012, Tzadik Records released a full album of Anna Clyne’s music, titled Blue Moth (Tzadik 8084), that showcases a diverse range of electroacoustic chamber music, including Rapture.

Cello Counterpoint : Version For Solo Cello and Tape

Cello Counterpoint is scored for eight Cellos and can be played by a soloist with the other parts pre-recorded (This tape is available from the Boosey & Hawkes rental library.) Alternatively,the piece can be played by a Cello Octet. (There are differences in the distribution of parts between the two versions.) The piece is in three movements: fast, slow, fast. The first and last movements are both based on a similarfour-chord cycle that moves ambiguously back and forth between C minor and E-flat major. This harmonic cycle is treated extremely freely, particularly in the third movement. The second, slow movement, is a canon in E-flatminorinvolving, near the end of the movement, seven separate voices. The piece is a little more than 11 minutes in duration and was co-commissioned by the Koussevitzky Foundation in the Library of Congress, the RoyalConservatory in The Hague and Leiden University, for Cellist Maya Beiser.

Spirit of the child

For Three Solo Treble Voices, Multiple Divisi Treble Chorus, Piano & Prepared Tape (available separately: 48005853). Spirit of the Child could be described as a choral drama. Its inspiration was derived from the plight ofchildren cught as innocent victims in civil was in the Sudan region of Africa. The final section reflects the distant beat and singing of the human spirit which directs us all, urging us to continue in spite of all difficulties.It is the Spirit of the Child in all of us that is never conquered, never enslaved and never dies. (Duration: ca. 10 minutes).

Missa Brevis

In 1955, while in the midst of working on a musical version of Voltaire's Candide with the distinguished American playwright Lillian Hellman, Leonard Bernstein composed French and Latin choruses as incidental music to the play The Lark adapted by Miss Hellman from the original French version by Jean Anouilh. Since the drama was about the trial of Joan of Arc, Bernstein’s music was deliberately evocative of the medieval era. In fact, the music was performed (on tape) by seven members of the New York Pro Musica Antiqua, a group specialising in pre-17th century music.Robert Shaw attended one of the first performances and suggested to Leonard Bernstein that with some changesand additions the music would make an effective Missa Brevis. Thirty-three years later, in honour of Maestro Shaw's retirement as Music Director of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, Bernstein has followed his colleague's suggestions.
