Criminal Justice Theory Volume 26 Explanations and Effects

Criminal Justice Theory Volume 26 Explanations and Effects

Criminal Justice Theory: Explanations and Effects undertakes a systematic study of theories of the criminal justice system which historically have received very little attention from scholars. This is a glaring omission given the risk of mass imprisonment the increasing presence of police in inner-city communities and the emergence of new policy initiatives aimed at improving the quality and effectiveness of the administration of justice. Fortunately however a number of disparate theoretical works have appeared that seek to provide insight into the nature and impact of criminal justice. Based on 13 original essays by influential scholars this volume pulls together the most significant of these perspectives thus creating a state-of-the-art assessment of contemporary criminal justice theory. Criminal justice theory can be divided into two main categories. The first includes works that seek to explain the operation of the criminal justice system. Most of these contributions have grappled with the core reality of American criminal justice: its rising embrace of punitiveness and the growth of mass imprisonment. The second category focuses on works that identify theories that have often guided efforts to reduce crime. The issue here focuses mainly on the effects of certain theoretically guided criminal justice interventions. The current volume is thus organized into these two categories: explanations and effects. The result is an innovative and comprehensive book that not only serves researchers by advancing scholarship but also is appropriate for advanced undergraduate or graduate classroom use. | Criminal Justice Theory Volume 26 Explanations and Effects

The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell Volume 26 Cold War Fears and Hopes 1950–52

The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell Volume 26 Cold War Fears and Hopes 1950–52

The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell Volume 26 covers a period of transition in Russell's political life between his orthodox and sometimes pugnacious defence of the West in the early post-war and the dissenting advocacy of nuclear disarmament and détente that started in earnest in the mid-1950s. While some of the assembled writings echo harsh prior criticism of Soviet expansionism and dictatorship others register growing qualms about the recklessness of American foreign policy and the baneful effects on civil liberties of anti-communist hysteria inside the United States. Whether continuing to push for western rearmament or highlighting in a more placatory vein the folly of the Cold War's divisions and rival fanaticisms Russell's paramount objective was avoiding a war that threatened global catastrophe. Suspended between fear and hope he expounded his evolving political concerns–and much else besides including autobiographical reflections and typically common-sense guidance for living well–in a constant flow of newspaper and magazine articles letters to editors radio broadcasts and discussions and of special note a Nobel Prize acceptance speech. Russell also completed two lecture tours of the United States (the last of many) as well as a landmark such visit to Australia. All three of these journeys and the textual record they left are examined in depth using manuscript material and unpublished correspondence from the Bertrand Russell Archives at McMaster University which is mined extensively throughout the volume. | The Collected Papers of Bertrand Russell Volume 26 Cold War Fears and Hopes 1950–52

Perspectives on the History of Higher Education Volume 26 2007

Perspectives on the History of Higher Education Volume 26 2007

This volume of Perspectives opens with two contrasting perspectives on the purpose of higher education at the dawning of the university age-perspectives that continue to define the debate today. First A. J. Angulo recreates the controversy surrounding the founding and early years of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Whether presented as an alternative to or a repudiation of the prevailing classical liberal education MIT was rejected as inherently inferior by college defenders. Second is George Levesque's penetrating reappraisal of Yale president Noah Porter (1870-1886). Known almost solely for his role as a college defender Porter is revealed as a vigorous scholar who became fixated with preserving the strengths of Yale College. As these matters were vigorously debated during these years Porter's position was superseded by more powerful forces. Considering the cliches about liberal domination of higher education it is seldom appreciated that the conservative movement has had a presence on campus throughout the postwar era. Jennifer de Forrest uses the reorganization of several conservative foundations to offer a critical appraisal of their impact. Known as the four sisters the Bradley Foundation the Scaife Foundations the Smith Richardson Foundation and the Olin Foundation have been sharply focused on winning student support by funding conservative scholars and networking organizations as well as student groups and newspapers. The tempestuous state of academic publishing is made more vivid by the clash of colorful characters. At the dawn of modern academic publishing the Educational Review published by Columbia's Nicholas Murray Butler was the foremost journal in its field. Paul McInerny interweaves the history of this journal with the educational issues of the late nineteenth century and the remarkable career of Columbia's longtime president. An additional actor is James McKeen Cattell a noted psychologist and prolific academic publisher. As a Columbia professor Cattell was also a thorn in the side of President Butler. In 1917 Butler fired Cattell for criticizing the war effort an egregious breach of academic freedom even for those early times. Events took an ironic turn however when Cattell later acquired Butler's former Review. | Perspectives on the History of Higher Education Volume 26 2007

Straddling Class in the Academy 26 Stories of Students Administrators and Faculty From Poor and Working-Class Backgrounds and Their Compel

Straddling Class in the Academy 26 Stories of Students Administrators and Faculty From Poor and Working-Class Backgrounds and Their Compel

Why do we feel uncomfortable talking about class? Why is it taboo? Why do people often address class through coded terminology like trashy classy and snobby? How does discriminatory language or how do conscious or unconscious derogatory attitudes or the anticipation of such behaviors impact those from poor and working class backgrounds when they straddle class? Through 26 narratives of individuals from poor and working class backgrounds – ranging from students to multiple levels of administrators and faculty both tenured and non-tenured – this book provides a vivid understanding of how people can experience and straddle class in the middle upper or even elitist class contexts of the academy. Through the powerful stories of individuals who hold many different identities-and naming a range of ways they identify in terms of race ethnicity gender sexuality age ability and religion among others-this book shows how social class identity and classism impact people's experience in higher education and why we should focus more attention on this dimension of identity. The book opens by setting the foundation by examining definitions of class discussing its impact on identity and summarizing the literature on class and what it can tell us about the complexities of class identity its fluidity sometimes performative nature and the sense of dissonance it can provoke. This book brings social class identity to the forefront of our consciousness conversations and behaviors and compels those in the academy to recognize classism and reimagine higher education to welcome and support those from poor and working class backgrounds. Its concluding chapter proposes means for both increasing social class consciousness and social class inclusivity in the academy. It is a compelling read for everyone in the academy not least for those from poor or working class backgrounds who will find validation and recognition and draw strength from its vivid stories. | Straddling Class in the Academy 26 Stories of Students Administrators and Faculty From Poor and Working-Class Backgrounds and Their Compel

Bryozoan Studies 2022 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NINETEENTH INTERNATIONAL BRYOZOOLOGY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE (DUBLIN IRELAND 22-26 AUGUST 2022)

Bryozoan Studies 2022 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NINETEENTH INTERNATIONAL BRYOZOOLOGY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE (DUBLIN IRELAND 22-26 AUGUST 2022)

Bryozoan Studies 2022 contains nineteen papers presented at the 19th International Conference of the International Bryozoology Association held at Trinity College Dublin in August 2022. Bryozoans are complex and fascinating colonial organisms that range from Cambrian to the present day and which are found in marine and freshwater environments from pole to pole and subtidal to abyssal. Recent tomographic techniques have revolutionised the study of modern and fossil taxa where internal structures are revealed through non-destructive methodologies. Here the internal structure of some Ordovician and Eocene taxa is illustrated through these methods. Phylogenetic studies of bryozoans question the classic classification of the group; here the phylogeny of species from California and Japan is described. Other topics covered are assessments of Recent faunas from Haiti and fossil assemblages from Mexico and the United States. Distributional patterns from the Arctic and New Zealand and the dispersal patterns of bryozoans on rafted pumice and on slipper lobsters are characterised. Further contributions provide descriptions of a rare Permian taxon clarification of species assigned to the Upper Palaeozoic genus Stenopora avicularia in Wilbertopora enigmatic structures in a fenestrate bryozoan repair structures in trepostomes and an assessment of skeletonisation in the families of Palaeozoic orders. | Bryozoan Studies 2022 PROCEEDINGS OF THE NINETEENTH INTERNATIONAL BRYOZOOLOGY ASSOCIATION CONFERENCE (DUBLIN IRELAND 22-26 AUGUST 2022)
