The Creationist Writings of Byron C. Nelson Originally published in 1995 this is the fifth volume in the series Creationism in 20th Century America. It re-publishes After Its Kind – a critique on theories of biological evolution and a defense of the biblical account of creation which Nelson wrote when he was a Pastor in New Jersey where he also attended classes in genetics and zoology at Rutgers university. His 1931 volume The Deluge Story in Stone: A History of the Flood Theory of Geology also reprinted here was continuously in print until the 1960s. As his scientific and theological correspondence expanded in the wake of his publications Nelson became further involved in the ‘evolution debates’. During the late 1930s his writings concentrated on early man and the glacial phenomena he saw all about him in Wisconsin and he compiled the materials he thought necessary to relate Scripture to the evidence of human antiquity. | The Creationist Writings of Byron C. Democratic Political Tragedy in the Postcolony The Tragedy of Postcoloniality in Michael Manley’s Jamaica and Nelson Mandela’s South Africa A ground-breaking work in Africana political thought that links the plight of progressive political endeavors in Africa with those in the Diaspora and beyond Democratic Tragedy in the Postcolony engages with two of the defining political sagas of the postcolonial era. The book presents Michael Manley of Jamaica and Nelson Mandela of South Africa as tragic political leaders at the helm of popular democratic projects that run aground in the face of the constraints that a subordinate position in the global economy presents for such endeavors. Jamaica’s experiment with democratic socialism as an alternative path to development at the height of the cold war is considered alongside post-Apartheid South Africa’s search for a development model consistent with the demand for civic empowerment and equitable distribution of social goods in the aftermath of Apartheid. Democratic Political Tragedy in the Postcolony theorizes the defining tragic impasse and the telling vacillations by which the postcolonies in question are brought to the neoliberal catastrophes that currently prevail. | Democratic Political Tragedy in the Postcolony The Tragedy of Postcoloniality in Michael Manley’s Jamaica and Nelson Mandela’s South Africa GBP 44.99 1

Slavery Geography and Empire in Nineteenth-Century Marine Landscapes of Montreal and Jamaica Slavery Geography and Empire in Nineteenth-Century Marine Landscapes of Montreal and Jamaica is among the first Slavery Studies books - and the first in Art History - to juxtapose temperate and tropical slavery. Charmaine A. Nelson explores the central role of geography and its racialized representation as landscape art in imperial conquest. One could easily assume that nineteenth-century Montreal and Jamaica were worlds apart but through her astute examination of marine landscape art the author re-connects these two significant British island colonies sites of colonial ports with profound economic and military value. Through an analysis of prints illustrated travel books and maps the author exposes the fallacy of their disconnection arguing instead that the separation of these colonies was a retroactive fabrication designed in part to rid Canada of its deeply colonial history as an integral part of Britain's global trading network which enriched the motherland through extensive trade in crops produced by enslaved workers on tropical plantations. The first study to explore James Hakewill's Jamaican landscapes and William Clark's Antiguan genre studies in depth it also examines the Montreal landscapes of artists including Thomas Davies Robert Sproule George Heriot and James Duncan. Breaking new ground Nelson reveals how gender and race mediated the aesthetic and scientific access of such - mainly white male - artists. She analyzes this moment of deep political crisis for British slave owners (between the end of the slave trade in 1807 and complete abolition in 1833) who employed visual culture to imagine spaces free of conflict and to alleviate their pervasive anxiety about slave resistance. Nelson explores how vision and cartographic knowledge translated into authority which allowed colonizers to 'civilize' the terrains of the so-called New World while belying the oppression of slavery and indigenous displacement. Regional Innovation And Global First Published in 1999. The process of globalization is shaped and reinforced by a rapidly changing knowledge environment. As economies become less constrained national frontiers they become more geographically specialized. Thus important elements of the innovation process tend to become regional rather than national. In this new environment large corporations are weakening their links with their home country spreading their innovation activities to source different regional systems of innovation. Regional networks of forms are creating new forms of learning and production. The aim of this book is to broaden both conceptually and empirically the 'national systems of innovation' approach developed by Lundvall Freeman Nelson and others. While recognizing the creative nature of economic adjustment in a turbulent world and the highly uneven distribution of economic growth the national systems approach lacks a mechanism by which to understand innovation when realistic unit of analysis is no longer the nation state. Written by leading scholars in the field this book provides a ground-breaking examination of sub-regional systems of innovation in an interconnected global economy. | Regional Innovation And Global GBP 175.00 1
Revival: Politics and Education (1928) This volume is being issued in the hope that readers of the addresses and lectures included in it may be induced to make further acquaintance with the works and thoughts of Leonard Nelson and to exert themselves actively in so far as they are persuaded of their validity in bringing them to bear on the practice of social life. Interests which usually present themselves as detached from one another-philosophical education ethical political interests for example -may be expected to be attracted to various parts of the volume and to derive furtherance and elightenment from it; and to readers who are apt to be absorbed in abstract and austere philosophic argument the fifth section. The Moral and the Religious View of the World may be especially commended as suitable to be read first. But the satisfaction of isolated interests is not the aim fo the author or of his friends; it is obvious from Nelson's example and from the whole tendendcy of the volume that he aims at a philosophic system which shall embrace and penetrate all out thoughts and action. | Revival: Politics and Education (1928) GBP 48.99 1
Letters from India The Correspondence of Lady Susan Ramsay 1854–1856 This fascinating volume reproduces the letters and journal of Lady Susan Ramsay (1837-1898) the elder daughter of the Marquess of Dalhousie Governor-General of India from 1848 to 1856. The correspondence was written over a two-year period: commencing with Susan’s positive response to her father’s request that she join him in Calcutta following the death of her mother; and concluding with Susan’s arrival with her father at Southampton. Lady Susan was still only 17 when she arrived in India and was therefore the youngest person to take up the role of vicereine of India. Her letters and journal represent the unique viewpoint of a highly intelligent witty articulate and unprejudiced young woman expressed from locations that range from Osborne on the Isle of Wight to Seringapatam in Mysore. The detail maturity and inventive quality of her writing invites comparison with that of Emily Eden Emily Metcalfe Charlotte Canning and other prominent early Victorian women. The Courtroom as a Space of Resistance Reflections on the Legacy of the Rivonia Trial Fifty years before his death in 2013 Nelson Mandela stood before Justice de Wet in Pretoria's Palace of Justice and delivered one of the most spectacular and liberating statements ever made from a dock. In what came to be regarded as the trial that changed South Africa Mandela summed up the spirit of the liberation struggle and the moral basis for the post-Apartheid society. In this blistering critique of Apartheid and its perversion of justice Mandela transforms the law into a sword and shield. He invokes it while undermining it uses it while subverting it and claims it while defeating it. Wise and strategic Mandela skilfully reimagines the courtroom as a site of visibility and hearing opening up a political space within the legal. This volume returns to the Rivonia courtroom to engage with Mandela's masterful performance of resistance and the dramatic core of that transformative event. Cutting across a wide-range of critical theories and discourses contributors reflect on the personal spatial temporal performative and literary dimensions of that constitutive event. By redefining the spaces institutions and discourses of law contributors present a fresh perspective that re-sets the margins of what can be thought and said in the courtroom. | The Courtroom as a Space of Resistance Reflections on the Legacy of the Rivonia Trial GBP 46.99 1
The New Midlife Self-Writing In The New Midlife Self-Writing Wittman treats recent self-writing by Rachel Cusk Roxane Gay Sarah Manguso and Maggie Nelson carefully situating these vital midlife works within the history of self-writing. She argues that they renew and redirect the autobiographical trajectories characteristic of earlier self-writing by switching their orientation to face the future and by celebrating midlife as a growing season a time of Bildung. In each chapter writer-by-writer she demonstrates how the midlife self-writers in question trace confident and future-oriented paths through the past rejecting triumphalism and complicating both identity and individualism just as they refine and redefine genres. Exploring these midlife self-writers as chroniclers of Generation X’s midlife in particular Wittman coins the term digital absence to map their unique relationship to new forms of knowledge and knowledge gathering in an Information Age that they are both of and set apart from. She theorizes that their works share a pedagogical style a style characterized by clarity exposition and classical rhetoric as well as a concern with the classroom offering a warrant for reading them in pedagogical terms in concert with traditional scholarly approaches. Furthermore Wittman presents readers with a look ahead at the future of midlife self-writing as well as self-writing overall concluding that we might be looking at the scholarship of the future.
