Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians

Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians

All people in no matter what culture must be able to place their music firmly in the context of the totality of their beliefs experiences and activities for without such ties music cannot exist. This means that there must be a body of theory connected with any music system - not necessarily a theory of the structure of music sound although that may be present as well but rather a theory of what music is what it does and how it is coordinated with the total environment both natural and cultural in which human beings move. The Flathead Indians of Western Montana (just over 26 000 in number as of the 2000 census) inhabit a reservation consisting of 632 516 acres of land in the Jocko and Flathead Valleys and the Camas Prairie country which lie roughly between Evaro and Kalispell Montana. The reservation is bounded on the east by the Mission Range on the west by the Cabinet National Forest on the south by the Lolo National Forest and on the north by an arbitrary line approximately bisecting Flathead Lake about twenty-four miles south of Kalispell. The area is one of the richest agricultural regions in Montana and fish and game are abundant. The Flathead are engaged in stocking timbering and various agricultural enterprises. For the Flathead the most important single fact about music and its relationship to the total world is its origin in the supernatural sphere. All true and proper songs particularly in the past owe their origin to a variety of contacts experienced by humans with beings which though a part of this world are superhuman and the source of both individual and tribal powers and skills. Thus a sharp distinction is drawn by the Flathead between what they call make-up and all other songs. Merriam's pioneering work in the relationship of ethnography and musicology remains a primary source in this field in anthropology. | Ethnomusicology of the Flathead Indians

Power Quality Issues Current Harmonics

Power Quality Issues Current Harmonics

Power Quality Issues: Current Harmonics provides solutions for the mitigation of power quality problems related to harmonics. Focusing on active power filters (APFs) due to their excellent harmonic and reactive power compensation in two-wire (single phase) three-wire (three-phase without neutral) and four-wire (three-phase with neutral) AC power networks with nonlinear loads the text:Introduces the APF technology describing various APF configurations and offering guidelines for the selection of APFs for specific application considerationsCompares shunt active filter (SHAF) control strategies for extracting three-phase reference currents evaluating their performance under a number of source voltage conditions using a proportional-integral (PI) controllerPresents PI controller-based SHAF instantaneous active and reactive power (p-q) and instantaneous active and reactive current (Id-Iq) control strategies supplying detailed MATLAB®/Simulink simulation resultsProposes SHAF control strategies using type 1 and type 2 fuzzy logic controllers (FLCs) with different fuzzy membership functions (MFs) analyzing their harmonic mitigation and DC link voltage regulationVerifies the proposed type 2 FLC-based SHAF control strategies with trapezoidal triangular and Gaussian fuzzy MFs using RT-LAB a real-time digital simulation software from OPAL-RT TechnologiesPower Quality Issues: Current Harmonics is a useful resource for those tackling electrical power quality challenges. The compensation techniques described in this book alleviate harmonic issues that can distort voltage waveforms fry a building’s wiring trigger nuisance tripping overheat transformer units and cause random end-user equipment failure. | Power Quality Issues Current Harmonics

Contemporary Circus

Contemporary Circus

In this volume twenty-four creators come together with three scholars to discuss Contemporary Circus bridging the divide between practice and theory. Lavers Leroux and Burtt offer conversations across four key themes: Apparatus Politics Performers and New Work. Extensively illustrated with fifty photos of Contemporary Circus productions and extensively annotated Contemporary Circus thematically groups and contextualises extracts of conversations to provide a sophisticated and wide-ranging study supported by critical theory. Of interest to both practitioners and scholars Contemporary Circus uses the lens of ‘contestation ’ or calling things into question to provide a portal into ways of seeing today’s circus performance. Conversations with: Lachlan Binns and Jascha Boyce (Gravity and Other Myths) Tilde Björfors (Cirkus Cirkör) Kim ‘Busty Beatz’ Bowers (Hot Brown Honey) Shana Carroll (The 7 Fingers) David Clarkson (Stalker) Philippe Decouflé (Compagnie DCA) Fez Faanana (Briefs) Mike Finch (Circus Oz) Daniele Finzi Pasca (Compagnia Finzi Pasca) Sean Gandini (Gandini Juggling) Firenza Guidi (ElanFrantoio NoFit State Circus) Jo Lancaster and Simon Yates (Acrobat) Johann Le Guillerm (Cirque Ici) Yaron Lifschitz (Circa) Chelsea McGuffin (Company 2) Phia Ménard (Compagnie Non Nova) Jennifer Miller (Circus Amok) Adrien Mondot (Compagnie Adrien M and Claire B) Charlotte Mooney and Tina Koch (Ockham’s Razor) Philippe Petit (high wire artist) and Elizabeth Streb (STREB EXTREME ACTION).

Handbook of Superconductivity Fundamentals and Materials Volume One

Handbook of Superconductivity Fundamentals and Materials Volume One

This is the first of three volumes of the extensively revised and updated second edition of the Handbook of Superconductivity. The past twenty years have seen rapid progress in superconducting materials which exhibit one of the most remarkable physical states of matter ever to be discovered. Superconductivity brings quantum mechanics to the scale of the everyday world where a single coherent quantum state may extend over a distance of metres or even kilometres depending on the size of a coil or length of superconducting wire. Viable applications of superconductors rely fundamentally on an understanding of this intriguing phenomena and the availability of a range of materials with bespoke properties to meet practical needs. This first volume covers the fundamentals of superconductivity and the various classes of superconducting materials which sets the context and background for Volumes 2 and 3. Key Features: Covers the depth and breadth of the field Includes contributions from leading academics and industry professionals across the world Provides hands-on guidance to the manufacturing and processing technologies A comprehensive reference this handbook is suitable for both graduate students and practitioners in experimental physics materials science and multiple engineering disciplines including electronic and electrical chemical mechanical metallurgy and others. | Handbook of Superconductivity Fundamentals and Materials Volume One
