Irish Women in the First World War Era Irish Women’s Lives 1914-18

Irish Women in the First World War Era Irish Women’s Lives 1914-18

This book is the first collection of essays to focus exclusively on Irish women’s experiences in the First World War period 1914-18 across the island of Ireland contextualising the wartime realities of women’s lives in a changing political landscape. The essays consider experiences ranging from the everyday realities of poverty and deprivation to the contributions made to the war effort by women through philanthropy and by working directly with refugees. Gendered norms and assumptions about women’s behaviour are critically analysed from the rhetoric surrounding ‘separation women’ and their use of alcohol to the navigation of public spaces and the attempts to deter women from perceived immoral behaviour. Political life is also examined by leading scholars in the field including accounts from women on both sides of the ‘Irish question’ and the impact the war had on their activism and ambitions. Finally new light is shed on the experiences of women working in munitions factories around Ireland and the complexity of this work in the Irish context is explored. Throughout it is asserted that while there were many commonalities in women’s experiences throughout the British and Irish Isles at this time the particular political context of Ireland added a different and in many respects an unexamined dimension. This book was originally published as a special issue of Women’s History Review. | Irish Women in the First World War Era Irish Women’s Lives 1914-18

Volume 18 Tome II: Kierkegaard Secondary Literature English A - K

In recent years interest in the thought of Kierkegaard has grown dramatically and with it the body of secondary literature has expanded so quickly that it has become impossible for even the most conscientious scholar to keep pace. The problem of the explosion of secondary literature is made more acute by the fact that much of what is written about Kierkegaard appears in languages that most Kierkegaard scholars do not know. Kierkegaard has become a global phenomenon and new research traditions have emerged in different languages countries and regions. The present volume is dedicated to trying to help to resolve these two problems in Kierkegaard studies. Its purpose is first to provide book reviews of some of the leading monographic studies in the Kierkegaard secondary literature so as to assist the community of scholars to become familiar with the works that they have not read for themselves. The aim is thus to offer students and scholars of Kierkegaard a comprehensive survey of works that have played a more or less significant role in the research. Second the present volume also tries to make accessible many works in the Kierkegaard secondary literature that are written in different languages and thus to give a glimpse into various and lesser-known research traditions. The six tomes of the present volume present reviews of works written in Catalan Chinese Czech Danish Dutch English Finnish French Galician German Greek Hebrew Hungarian Italian Japanese Norwegian Polish Portuguese Romanian Russian Slovak Spanish and Swedish. | Volume 18 Tome II: Kierkegaard Secondary Literature English A - K

Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges Proceedings of the EAAE ARCC 10th International Conference (EAAE ARCC 2016) 15-18 Jun

The escalating interdependecy of nations drives global geopolitics to shift ever more quickly. Societies seem unable to control any change that affects their cities whether positively or negatively. Challenges are global but solutions need to be implemented locally. How can architectural research contribute to the future of our changing society? How has it contributed in the past? The theme of the 10th EAAE/ARCC International Conference “Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges” was set to address these questions. This book Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges includes reviewed papers presented in June 2016 at the 10th EAAE/ARCC International Conference which was held at the facilities of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon. The papers have been further divided into the following five sub-themes: a Changing Society; In Transit – Global Migration; Renaturalization of the City; Emerging Fields of Architectural Practice; and Research on Architectural Education. The EAAE/ARCC International Conference held under the aegis of the EAAE and of the ARCC is a conference organized every other year in collaboration with one of the member schools/ universities of those associations alternatively in North America or in Europe. | Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges Proceedings of the EAAE ARCC 10th International Conference (EAAE ARCC 2016) 15-18 Jun

Journeys through Emerging Adulthood An Introduction to Development from Ages 18-30 Around the World

Journeys through Emerging Adulthood An Introduction to Development from Ages 18-30 Around the World

Journeys through Emerging Adulthood takes the reader on a tour of contemporary transitions to adulthood reporting on the latest cross-national and cross-cultural research into young adulthood and separating fact from fiction about this important life phase. Alan Reifman shows how today’s youth are taking more time to enter traditional adult roles and explores the benefits and disadvantages of this gradual emergence into adulthood. This essential textbook navigates the research that reveals the substantial variety in young people’s paths to adulthood. It covers the spectrum of the young adult experience examining the influence that parents have on their grown children’s progress and identity as adults and considering the impact of traditional milestones such as higher education establishing a career forming romantic relationships and becoming a parent. It examines key topics including mental health in emerging adults and the likelihood of substance abuse and how young adults might reach out into the community through volunteerism religious involvement and political activism. Each section includes examples and studies conducted in a range of countries exploring how the journey to adulthood can vary according to cultural context as well as individual circumstance. The book affirms that while there is great variety in how one transitions to adulthood there is no correct path and most people fare well – or even thrive – in adulthood. Featuring end-of-chapter summaries quizzes and activities Journeys Through Emerging Adulthood provides an accessible yet comprehensive overview of this significant life stage connecting fundamental psychological theories with modern social phenomena. Reifman’s text is essential reading for both undergraduate and graduate students of psychology human development and sociology as well as students and researchers of any discipline interested in the path to adulthood. | Journeys through Emerging Adulthood An Introduction to Development from Ages 18-30 Around the World
