Hot Art Cold War – Western and Northern European Writing on American Art 1945-1990

Hot Art Cold War – Western and Northern European Writing on American Art 1945-1990

Hot Art Cold War – Northern and Western European Writing on American Art 1945-1990 is one of two text anthologies that trace the reception of American art in Europe during the Cold War era through primary sources. With the exception of those originally published in English the majority of these texts are translated into English for the first time from eight languages and are introduced by scholarly essays. They offer a representative selection of the diverse responses to American art in Great Britain Ireland France Belgium the Netherlands West Germany (FRG) Austria Switzerland Denmark Norway Sweden and Finland. There was no single European discourse as attitudes to American art were determined by a wide range of ideological political social cultural and artistic positions that varied considerably across the European nations. This volume and its companion Hot Art Cold War – Southern and Eastern European Writing on American Art 1945-1990 offer the reader a unique opportunity to compare how European art writers introduced and explained contemporary American art to their many and varied audiences. Whilst many are fluent in one or two foreign languages few are able to read all twenty-five languages represented in the two volumes. These ground-breaking publications significantly enrich the fields of American art studies and European art criticism. This book together with its companion volume Hot Art Cold War – Southern and Eastern European Writing on American Art 1945-1990 is a joint initiative of the Terra Foundation for American Art and the editors of the journal Art in Translation at the University of Edinburgh. The journal launched in 2009 publishes English-language translations of the most significant texts on art and visual cultures presently only available only in their source language. It is committed to widening the perspectives of art history making it more pluralist in terms of its authors viewpoints and subject matter. | Hot Art Cold War – Western and Northern European Writing on American Art 1945-1990

Decommissioning Health Physics A Handbook for MARSSIM Users Second Edition

Experienced Guidance on the Technical Issues of Decommissioning ProjectsWritten by one of the original MARSSIM authors Decommissioning Health Physics: A Handbook for MARSSIM Users Second Edition is the only book to incorporate all of the requisite technical aspects of planning and executing radiological surveys in support of decommissioning. Extensively revised and updated it covers survey instrumentation detection sensitivity statistics dose modeling survey procedures and release criteria. New to the Second EditionChapter on hot spot assessment that recognizes appropriate dosimetric significance of hot spots when designing surveys and includes a new approach for establishing hot spot limitsChapter on the clearance or release of materials highlighting aspects of the MARSAME manualRevised chapter on characterization survey design to reflect guidance in ANSI N13. 59 on the value of data quality objectives (DQOs)Updated regulations and guidance documents throughout Updated survey instrumentation used to support decontamination and decommissioning (D&D) surveys including expanded coverage of in situ gamma spectrometersRevised statistics chapter that includes an introduction to Bayesian statistics and additional double sampling and ranked set sampling statistical approachesMore case studies and examples throughout Implement the Surveys Effectively and Avoid Common PitfallsWith more than 20 years of experience as a practitioner in the decommissioning survey field author Eric W. Abelquist prepares you for the technical challenges associated with planning and executing MARSSIM surveys. He discusses the application of statistics for survey design and data reduction and addresses the selection of survey instrumentation and detection sensitivity. Thermal Energy Storage with Phase Change Materials

Thermal Energy Storage with Phase Change Materials

This book focuses on latent heat storage which is one of the most efficient ways of storing thermal energy. Unlike the sensible heat storage method the latent heat storage method provides much higher storage density with a smaller difference between storing and releasing temperatures. Thermal Energy Storage with Phase Change Materials is structured into four chapters that cover many aspects of thermal energy storage and their practical applications. Chapter 1 reviews selection performance and applications of phase change materials. Chapter 2 investigates mathematical analyses of phase change processes. Chapters 3 and 4 present passive and active applications for energy saving peak load shifting and price-based control heating using phase change materials. These chapters explore the hot topic of energy saving in an overarching way and so they are relevant to all courses. This book is an ideal research reference for students at the postgraduate level. It also serves as a useful reference for electrical mechanical and chemical engineers and students throughout their work. FEATURES Explains the technical principles of thermal energy storage including materials and applications in different classifications Provides fundamental calculations of heat transfer with phase change Discusses the benefits and limitations of different types of phase change materials (PCM) in both micro- and macroencapsulations Reviews the mechanisms and applications of available thermal energy storage systems Introduces innovative solutions in hot and cold storage applications

Liquid Crystal Sensors

Liquid Crystal Sensors

Liquid Crystal Sensors discusses novel applications of liquid crystals that lie beyond electrically driven optical switches and displays. The main focus is on recent progress in the area of sensors based on low molar mass and polymer liquid crystals. This area of research became hot in recent years since the possibilities for applications of liquid crystal sensors are growing in many areas ranging from the detection of mechanical displacements to the detection of environmental pollutants and chemical agents. This book is well-suited for students as well as scientists from different backgrounds. For students and researchers new to the field it gives a thorough introduction. For experienced researchers it shows the latest breakthroughs and serves as an inspiration for solving problems or sparking new ideas. Key Features:Emphasizes how liquid crystals are extremely sensitive to external stimuli and therefore can be used for the construction of stimuli-responsive devices such as sensors Includes the contributions of editors who are deeply involved in the field and author chapters on hot topics such as the sensitivity of liquid crystals to pollutants UV light and strainProvides an exclusive on LC sensors where having the data in one place will be very useful to the community Gives more information on sensors and broadens the scope by having a contributed volume rather than authored Combines recent data on advances in the area of liquid crystal sensors that includes many types of liquid crystal materials
