On Shell Structure This volume collects together core papers by Richard K. Larson developing what has since come to be known as the VP Shell or Split VP analysis of sentential structure. The volume includes five previously published papers together with two major unpublished works from the same period: Light Predicate Raising (1989) which explores the interesting consequences of a leftward raising analysis of NP Shift phenomena and The Projection of DP (and DegP) (1991) which extends the shell approach to the projection of nominal and adjectival structure showing how projection can be handled in a uniform way. In addition to published unpublished and limited distribution work the volume includes extensive new introductory material. The general introduction traces the conceptual roots of VP Shells and its problems in the face of subsequent developments in theory and offers an updated form compatible with modern Minimalist syntactic analysis. The section introductions to the material on datives complex predicates and nominals show how the updated form of shell theory applies in the empirical domains where it was originally developed. | On Shell Structure GBP 48.99 1

Diradicaloids π-Conjugated molecules with an even number of π-electrons usually have a closed-shell ground state. However recent studies have demonstrated that a certain type of molecules could show open-shell singlet ground state and display diradical-like (diradicaloid) behavior. Their electronic structure can be understood in terms of the “diradical character” and “aromaticity” concepts. They display very different electronic properties from traditional closed-shell π-conjugated molecules and could be used as next-generation molecular materials. This book provides a comprehensive review on the chemistry physics and material applications of open-shell singlet diradicaloids. Particularly it elaborates the fundamental structure–diradical character–electronic property relationships both theoretically and experimentally. The book has been written by leading scientists in the field from Japan Germany Spain Italy China and Singapore. GBP 193.00 1

Mysticism in the French Tradition Eruptions from France In the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries secular French scholars started re-engaging with religious ideas particularly mystical ones. Mysticism in the French Tradition introduces key philosophical undercurrents and trajectories in French thought that underpin and arise from this engagement as well as considering earlier French contributions to the development of mysticism. Filling a gap in the literature the book offers critical reflections on French scholarship in terms of its engagement with its mystical and apophatic dimensions. A multiplicity of factors converge to shape these encounters with mystical theology: feminist devotional and philosophical treatments as well as literary historical and artistic approaches. The essays draw these into conversation. Bringing together an international and interdisciplinary range of contributions from both new and established scholars this book provides access to the melting pot out of which the mystical tradition in France erupted in the twenty-first century and from which it continues to challenge theology today. | Mysticism in the French Tradition Eruptions from France GBP 39.99 1

Foundations of Scenario Planning The Story of Pierre Wack Pierre Wack was head of scenario planning at Royal Dutch / Shell Oil in London for just over ten years. He died in 1997. He was a pioneer of what we know today as scenario planning – an alternative and complement to strategic planning. Scenarios explore a variety of possible futures for examining decisions in organizational planning. Pierre was a unique man with interests in Indian and Japanese cultures and traditions. He travelled extensively and led a unique life that involved long periods of visiting gurus in India and extended sabbaticals in Japan. His experiences with Eastern thought no doubt shaped his ability to evolve the scenario method at Shell and as a result he was able to lead a team that foresaw the oil crises of the 1970’s and 80’s. This new volume will cover the basic context of his life timeline and attach it to the development of his thinking about scenario planning over the course of his career. After his death Wack’s materials papers and documents were collected by Napier Collyns and have recently been made available at the University of Oxford where the Pierre Wack Memorial Library has been established. These documents contain a variety of clues and stories that reveal more about who Pierre Wack was how he thought and will provide details about scenario planning that have never been seen or published. They also reveal a curious man and include a timeline written by his wife Eve which details their relationship over the course of 40 years. Written for management and business historians and researchers this book will uncover unseen contributions by a scenario planning pioneer shaped by significant events in his personal life that helped him to see the world differently. | Foundations of Scenario Planning The Story of Pierre Wack GBP 42.99 1

A Jungian Inquiry into the American Psyche The Violence of Innocence In A Jungian Inquiry into the American Psyche: The Violence of Innocence Ipek Burnett’s penetrating cultural criticism enriched with psychoanalytical and Jungian insight offers a timely interrogation of national consciousness in the United States. Through evocative storytelling Burnett unpacks the images and myths that run deep in the American psyche—from that of the New World the city upon a hill to the Manifest Destiny the melting pot and the pursuit of happiness. Against this backdrop she investigates the vicious cycles of innocence and violence that have dominated American history and continue to reinforce systematic oppression in America evident in racial and economic inequality xenophobia materialism and more. Burnett’s thought-provoking analysis exposes the ways in which psychological defenses such as historical amnesia projection denial and dissociation work on a collective level helping America avoid a confrontation with these violent truths of its past and present circumstances and its national character. With its seamless multidisciplinary approach and revealing insight this book will be of great interest to psychologists scholars and students of Jungian and post-Jungian thought depth psychology and cultural and American studies. Time and History in Prehistory Time and History in Prehistory explores the many processes through which time and history are conceptualized and constructed challenging the perception of prehistoric societies as ahistorical. Drawing equally on contemporary theory and illustrative case studies and firmly rooted in material evidence this book rearticulates concepts of time and history questions the kind of narratives to be written about the past and underlines the fundamentally historical nature of prehistory. From a range of multi-disciplinary perspectives the authors of this volume address the scales at which archaeological evidence and narrative are interwoven from a single day to deep history and from a solitary pot to a complete city. In doing so they argue the need for a multi-scalar approach to prehistoric data that allows for the interplay between short and long term and for analytical units that encourage us to move continuously between scales. The growing interest in time and history in archaeology and across a wide range of disciplines concerned with human action and the human past highlights that these are exceptionally active fields. By juxtaposing varied viewpoints this volume bridges gaps in narrative finds a place for inclusive histories and makes clear the benefit of integrative and interdisciplinary approaches including different disciplines and types of data.
