Parent Education for the Critical 1000 Days As research in neuroscience increasingly points to the unparalleled influence of the first 1000 days of life from conception to two years of age in determining the baby’s life trajectory the need for high-quality early parenting education delivered by knowledgeable and dedicated professionals becomes ever more apparent. This book describes the global aims of early parenting education. It identifies the key areas that research suggests are important: building a relationship with the unborn and newborn baby; preparing for labour and birth; supporting parents’ mental health; protecting the couple relationship across the transition to parenthood; and education for special groups such as same-sex couples women with fear of birth prisoners military wives and parents from black and minority ethnic backgrounds. All practitioners providing early parenting programmes – midwives health visitors family link workers children’s centre staff and voluntary sector teachers – will gain new ideas for their practice in this book. Students taking midwifery and early childhood courses will find much to support their studies. Ultimately the book provides inspiration for all those who are committed to the role of parenting education in reducing social inequalities. | Parent Education for the Critical 1000 Days GBP 22.99 1
Crusading at the Edges of Europe Denmark and Portugal c.1000 c.1250 This book is the first to compare Denmark and Portugal systematically in the High Middle Ages and demonstrates how the two countries became strong kingdoms and important powers internationally by their participation in the crusading movement. Communication in the Middle Ages was better developed than often assumed and institutions ideas and military technology was exchanged rapidly meaning it was possible to coordinate great military expeditions across the geographical periphery of Western Europe. Both Denmark and Portugal were closely connected to the sea and developed strong fleets at the entrance to the Baltic and in the Mediterranean Seas respectively. They also both had religious borders to the pagan Wends and to the Muslims that were pushed forward in almost continuous crusades throughout the centuries. Crusading at the Edges of Europe follows the major campaigns of the kings and crusaders in Denmark and Portugal and compares war-technology and crusading ideology highlighting how the countries learned from each other and became organised for war. | Crusading at the Edges of Europe Denmark and Portugal c. 1000 c. 1250 GBP 38.99 1

Rome and her Empire The name of Rome excites a picture of power and organisation as do the widely-spread ruins that Roman civilization left behind. Yet Rome grew out of a collection of small villages and major developments such as the growth of Empire were unplanned and completely unprepared for. Influenced by a small number of self-interested aristocrats who lacked a broader vision Rome was often threatened by their intrigues. Brought to the ground on a number of occasions its leaders were able to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat. How did Rome survive for nearly 1000 years ruling over millions of people with few instances of internal rebellion? David Shotter argues that the key was the way Rome managed to adapt to new circumstances without at the same time discarding too many of its cherished traditions. | Rome and her Empire GBP 130.00 1

Mugging as a Social Problem First published in 1980 Mugging as a Social Problem sets out to remedy the deficiency of serious research on mugging. The work is based on a random sample of over 1000 muggings which occurred within the Metropolitan Police District in the mid-1970s and the author analyses the results not only in absolute and comparative terms but also against a background of social determinants such as ecology deprivation and race. Dr. Pratt’s long-term solution is not novel: an all-round improvement in housing employment and social conditions will eventually remove the circumstances which create muggers; but there are steps he suggests which can be taken in the short term to stop mugging by reducing opportunity. However before any effective measures can be introduced more facts are needed about the background motives and methods of the typical mugger: it is just such facts that this study sets out to provide. This book will be of interest to students of sociology law urban studies and criminology. GBP 90.00 1
Efficiency Issues in Transitional Economies Application to Hungary Published in 1999 this text uses a number of approaches to measure the performance of firms in the transition economies of Central Eastern Europe during the early stages of reform. There is considerable controversy about the level of productivity in this period as is evident by contradictory evidence quoted in the literature and a high degree of inconsistency in published national statistics. Indeed the disagreement extends to the measurement approach and the results for this group of countries. Particularly difficult is any analysis at the firm level as data is inconsistent incomplete and based on now out-dated accounting systems. The information used in this book is a panel data set of 64 items collected from 1000 firms across 25 industry sectors in Hungary. Productive efficiency is measured and the reasons for poor performance are discussed. It was found that industrial sectors differ in their average performance levels and in the factors most likely to account for this. Finally recommendations are developed to help to reverse the decline in productivity. | Efficiency Issues in Transitional Economies Application to Hungary GBP 21.99 1

Jail Journeys The English Prison Experience Since 1918 Originally published in 1989 Jail Journeys was a contemporary history of the English prison system in the words of those who had endured it as prisoners or who had worked within it. More than 1000 extracts from more than 150 first-hand accounts of life ‘inside’ chronicle the empty routines of the prison day and tell of the loneliness the despair the squalor the fights the friendships the sex the humour. There are also eye-witness accounts of the Dartmoor Mutiny of hangings and floggings of escapes and personal statements by the well-known – James Phelan Wilfred Macartney Albert Pierrepoint Charles Kray John McVicar Jimmy Boyle Alfie Hinds Lord Alfred Douglas – and by many others less well known. These testimonies by turn dramatic literate and naïve add up to an implicit sociology of the twentieth-century English prison depicting a divided social structure with ‘screws’ on one side and ‘cons’ on the other. Public Relations and Whistleblowing Golden Handcuffs in Corporate Wrongdoing There is a growing interest in corporate whistleblowing but no comprehensive research has yet focused on public relations practice. Drawing on extensive research on Fortune 1000 and Wilshire 5000 corporations this book reveals executives’ attitudes and relationships toward their organizations and their impact on whistleblowing. Perhaps unsurprisingly it reveals that wrongdoing in corporations and the privileges of power coexist. Top-ranking public relations executives who are mostly white and male are more likely to be aware of wrongdoing but no more likely to blow the whistle fundamentally due to their positive relationship with their employers. Using the new lens of evolutionary theory this study explains whistleblowing retaliation and relationships and in the light of the connection between whistleblowing behavior and executives’ attitudes it proposes a new theory of the phenomenon of Golden Handcuffs. As public attitudes to corporations corporate social responsibility (CSR) and transparency harden these findings have serious implications for companies globally. Researchers scholars and advanced students in public relations organizational communication corporate communication strategic communication corporate reputation and CSR will find this book full of revealing insights. | Public Relations and Whistleblowing Golden Handcuffs in Corporate Wrongdoing GBP 34.99 1
Norse Greenland: Viking Peasants in the Arctic How could a community of 2000–3000 Viking peasants survive in Arctic Greenland for 430 years (ca. 985–1415) and why did they finally disappear? European agriculture in an Arctic environment encountered serious ecological challenges. The Norse peasants faced these challenges by adapting agricultural practices they had learned from the Atlantic and North Sea coast of Norway. Norse Greenland was the stepping stone for the Europeans who first discovered America and settled briefly in Newfoundland ca. AD 1000. The community had a global significance which surpassed its modest size. In the last decades scholars have been nearly unanimous in emphasising that long-term climatic and environmental changes created a situation where Norse agriculture was no longer sustainable and the community was ruined. A secondary hypothesis has focused on ethnic confrontations between Norse peasants and Inuit hunters. In the last decades ethnic violence has been on the rise in Eastern Europe the Middle East and parts of Africa. In some cases it has degenerated into ethnic cleansing. This has strengthened the interest in ethnic violence in past societies. Challenging traditional hypotheses is a source of progress in all science. The present book does this on the basis of relevant written and archaeological material respecting the methodology of both sciences. | Norse Greenland: Viking Peasants in the Arctic GBP 39.99 1

Building Construction and Drawing 1906 A Textbook on the Principles and Details of Modern Construction First Stage (Or Elementary Course) Originally published in 1881 but here reissuing the 1906 edition with a new introduction by Stephen J. Scaysbrook the Mitchell Building and Construction books offer an unparalleled insight into construction techniques and materials. Originally written to provide a concise handbook and guide for students and for practitioners this reissue of Mitchell’s 1906 First Stage or Elementary Course edition now provides a valuable addition to building pathology allowing students and practitioners to research construction methods and materials pertinent to the period. Including over 1000 drawings it is of no surprise to see Mitchell’s First Stage or Elementary edition start with a detailed explanation of the instruments and methods of drawing with pencil ink and tracing paper emphasising the need to learn basic drawing skills and the need to think about a detail and the materials used to create a detail capable of lasting well over 100 years or more. The simple act of making a scale from a drawing with only one dimension may be lost to modern-day students but not to Charles Mitchell who describes the method and its use. | Building Construction and Drawing 1906 A Textbook on the Principles and Details of Modern Construction First Stage (Or Elementary Course) GBP 29.99 1
