Controlled Drinking Originally published in 1981 and revised in 1983 Controlled Drinking was the first scholarly review of the literature on a controversial but increasingly practiced approach to the treatment of alcoholism. Nick Heather and Ian Robertson analyse all the pertinent questions that controlled drinking raises starting with the need to examine the ‘disease conception’ of alcoholism and ‘total abstinence’ treatment. They look at the evidence indicating that some people previously diagnosed as alcoholics are able to return to normal controlled patterns of drinking and discuss therapies where controlled drinking is the treatment goal fully reviewing the evidence for their success and failure. Concluding with a discussion of the theoretical and policy implications of controlled drinking the authors recommend that the disease view of alcoholism be finally abandoned. For the revised paperback edition as well as correcting and updating the text and references the authors included an important postscript on the charges of falsification of evidence and their subsequent refutation which made up the Sobell affair. The wealth of other material presented in Controlled Drinking supports the authors’ conclusions even if the Sobells’ work were ignored. However this revised edition was made more useful for student and professional readers by the postscript’s discussion of the controversy surrounding the most widely known and quoted controlled drinking trial at the time. Evaluating Family Programs Current Issues in Theory and Policy The diverse composition of American families and changing ways of raising our children have become subjects of intense scrutiny by researchers and policymakers in recent years. Shifting demographics and work patterns growing numbers of women in the work force teenage pregnancy single-parent families and the deinstitutionalization of the elderly disabled and mentally ill-all these trends have significantly affected family life. Evaluating Family Programs effectively bridges the gap between researchers and practitioners in order to bring practical understandable advice to providers of family programs and to program funders and policymakers. Heather B. Weiss and Francine H. Jacobs have collected in this volume works which move outside the traditional approaches of their disciplines to create new models for delivering and evaluating services. This sets a mood of genuine inquiry and excitement about successful aspects of programs while maintaining openness about the limitations of both research and practice. By expanding the research model this work is an attempt to understand reciprocal influences of extended family culture community and social institutions. It urges those who advocate program accountability to understand that not all types of evaluations are appropriate for all programs and it notes that limitations in current evaluation technologies make it difficult to evaluate outcomes. Evaluating Family Programs reminds the reader that in order to develop sound family policy we must look at children and families in context. Beacuse policymakers program administrators and informed citizens have come to rely more upon the results of evaluation research we must improve our methods while not losing sight of its limitations. It is a thought-provoking contribution to the efforts of those who seek to support the American family with compassion understanding and realism. | Evaluating Family Programs Current Issues in Theory and Policy GBP 140.00 1
Exemplars of Assessment in Higher Education Diverse Approaches to Addressing Accreditation Standards Co-published with “While assessment may feel to constituents like an activity of accountability simply for accreditors it is most appropriate to approach assessment as an activity of accountability for students. Assessment results that improve institutional effectiveness heighten student learning and better align resources serve to make institutions stronger for the benefit of their students and those results also serve the institution or program well during the holistic evaluation required through accreditation. ” – from the foreword by Heather Perfetti President of the Middle States Commission on Higher EducationColleges and universities struggle to understand precisely what is being asked for by accreditors and this book answers that question by sharing examples of success reported by schools specifically recommended by accreditors. This compendium gathers examples of assessment practice in twenty-four higher education institutions: twenty-three in the U. S. and one in Australia. All institutions represented in this book were suggested by their accreditor as having an effective assessment approach in one or more of the following assessment focused areas: assessment in the disciplines co-curricular course/program/institutional assessment equity and inclusion general education online learning program review scholarship of teaching and learning student learning or technology. These examples recommended by accrediting agencies makes this a unique contribution to the assessment literature. The book is organized in four parts. Part One is focused on student learning and assessment and includes ten chapters. The primary focus for Part Two is student learning assessment from a disciplinary perspective and includes four chapters. Part Three has a faculty engagement and assessment focus and Part Four includes four chapters on institutional effectiveness and assessment with a focus on strategic planning. Multiracial Experiences in Higher Education Contesting Knowledge Honoring Voice and Innovating Practice Recipient of the 2021 Innovation Award of The Multiracial Network (MRN) In the last Census over 9 million people – nearly 3% of the population – identified themselves as of two or more races. The proportion of college students who identify as Multiracial is somewhat higher and growing. Although increasing at a slightly slower rate Multiracial faculty and staff are also teaching and working on campuses in greater numbers. Together Multiracial people from diverse backgrounds and in various roles are influencing college and university culture practices and climate. This book centers the experiences of Multiracial people those individuals claiming heritage and membership in two or more (mono)racial groups and/or identifies with a Multiracial term. These terms include the broader biracial multiethnic and mixed or more specific terms like Blasian and Mexipino. In addressing the recurring experiences of inclusion exclusion affirmation and challenges that they encounter the contributors identify the multiple sites in higher education that affect personal perceptions of self belonging rejection and resilience; describe strategies they utilized to support themselves or other Multiracial people at their institutions; and to advocate for greater awareness of Multiracial issues and a commitment to institutional change. In covering an array of Multiracial experiences the book brings together a range of voices social identities (including race) ages perspectives and approaches. The chapter authors present a multiplicity of views because as the book exemplifies multiracial people are not a monolithic group nor are their issues and needs universal to all. The book opens by outlining the literature and theoretical frameworks that provide context and foundations for the chapters that follow. It then presents a range of first-person narratives – reflecting the experiences of students faculty and staff – that highlight navigating to and through higher education from diverse standpoints and positionalities. The final section offers multiple strategies and applied methods that can be used to enhance Multiracial inclusion through research curriculum and practice. The editors conclude with recommendations for future scholarship and practice. This book invites Multiracial readers their allies and those people who interact with and influence the daily lives of Multiracial people to explore issues of identity and self-care build coalitions on campus and advocate for change. For administrators student affairs personnel and anyone concerned with diversity on campus it opens a window on a growing population with whom they may be unfamiliar mis-categorize or overlook and on the need to change systems and structures to address their full inclusion and unveil their full impact. Games Gambling and Probability An Introduction to Mathematics Many experiments have shown the human brain generally has very serious problems dealing with probability and chance. A greater understanding of probability can help develop the intuition necessary to approach risk with the ability to make more informed (and better) decisions. The first four chapters offer the standard content for an introductory probability course albeit presented in a much different way and order. The chapters afterward include some discussion of different games different ideas that relate to the law of large numbers and many more mathematical topics not typically seen in such a book. The use of games is meant to make the book (and course) feel like fun! Since many of the early games discussed are casino games the study of those games along with an understanding of the material in later chapters should remind you that gambling is a bad idea; you should think of placing bets in a casino as paying for entertainment. Winning can obviously be a fun reward but should not ever be expected. Changes for the Second Edition: New chapter on Game Theory New chapter on Sports Mathematics The chapter on Blackjack which was Chapter 4 in the first edition appears later in the book. Reorganization has been done to improve the flow of topics and learning. New sections on Arkham Horror Uno and Scrabble have been added. Even more exercises were added! The goal for this textbook is to complement the inquiry-based learning movement. In my mind concepts and ideas will stick with the reader more when they are motivated in an interesting way. Here we use questions about various games (not just casino games) to motivate the mathematics and I would say that the writing emphasizes a just-in-time mathematics approach. Topics are presented mathematically as questions about the games themselves are posed. Table of Contents Preface1. Mathematics and Probability 2. Roulette and Craps: Expected Value 3.
