McDowell and the Hermeneutic Tradition

McDowell and the Hermeneutic Tradition

This volume explores the connections between John McDowell’s philosophy and the hermeneutic tradition. The contributions not only explore the hermeneutical aspects of McDowell’s thought but also ask how this reading of McDowell can inform the hermeneutical tradition itself. John McDowell has made important contributions to debates in epistemology metaethics and philosophy of language and his readings of Aristotle Kant Hegel and Wittgenstein have proved widely influential. While there are instances in which McDowell draws upon the work of hermeneutic thinkers the hermeneutic strand of McDowell’s philosophy has not yet been systematically explored in depth. The chapters in this volume open up a space in which to read McDowell himself as a hermeneutic thinker. They address several research questions: How can McDowell’s recourse to the hermeneutical tradition be understood in detail? Besides Gadamer does McDowell’s work implicitly convey and advance motives from other seminal figures of this tradition such as Heidegger and Dilthey? Are there aspects of McDowell’s position that can be enhanced through a juxtaposition with central hermeneutic concepts like World Tradition and Understanding? Are there further perhaps yet unexplored aspects of McDowell’s infl uences that ought to be interpreted as expressing hermeneutic ideas? McDowell and the Hermeneutic Tradition will appeal to researchers and advanced students working in American philosophy Continental philosophy hermeneutics history of philosophy philosophy of language and epistemology.

The Contemporary Freudian Tradition Past and Present

The Contemporary Freudian Tradition Past and Present

This is the first book dedicated to the Contemporary Freudian Tradition. In its introduction and through its selection of papers it describes the development and rich diversity of this tradition over recent decades showing how theory and practice are inseparable in the psychoanalytic treatment of children adolescents and adults. The book is organized around four major concerns in the Contemporary Freudian Tradition: the nature of the Unconscious and the ways that it manifests itself; the extension of Freud’s theories of development through the work of Anna Freud and later theorists; the body and psychosexuality including the centrality of bodily experience as it is elaborated over time in the life of the individual; and aggression. It also illustrates how within the Tradition different exponents have been influenced by psychoanalytic thinking outside it whether from the Kleinian and Independent Groups or from French Freudian thinking. Throughout the book there is strong emphasis on the clinical setting in for example the value of the Tradition’s approach to the complex interrelationship of body and mind in promoting a deeper understanding of somatic symptoms and illnesses and working with them. There are four papers on the subject of dreams within the Contemporary Freudian Tradition illustrating the continuing importance accorded to dreams and dreaming in psychoanalytic treatment. This is the only book that describes in detail the family resemblances shared by those working psychoanalytically within the richly diverse Contemporary Freudian Tradition. It should appeal to anyone from student onwards who is interested in the living tradition of Freud’s work as understood by one of the three major groups within British psychoanalysis. | The Contemporary Freudian Tradition Past and Present

Oral Tradition A Study in Historical Methodology

Oral Tradition A Study in Historical Methodology

Oral traditions are historical sources of a special nature. Their special nature derives from the fact that they are unwritten sources couched in a form suitable for oral transmission and that their preservation depends on the powers of memory of successive generations of human beings. In many parts of the world inhabited by peoples without writing oral tradition forms the main available source for a reconstruction of the past. Do the special characteristics of oral traditions u unwritten information dependent on the memory of successive generations u invalidate them as sources of historical data? If not are there means for testing their reliability? Professor Vansina shows in Oral Tradition that with knowledge of the language and of the society the anthropologist and historian can extract or deduce the historical content of oral testimonies. Based on the author's many years of fieldwork in Africa this definitive work explores the possibility of reconstructing the history of non-literate peoples from their oral traditions surveys existing literature offers a typology of oral traditions and evaluates methods of collection and interpretation. On first publication Daniel McCall in the American Anthropologist called Oral Tradition a tour de force. Indeed this may well be the most significant work written on the relation of oral tradition to history in thirty yearsafor any field worker who intends to collect oral traditions this work is indispensable. | Oral Tradition A Study in Historical Methodology

The History and Tradition of Accounting in Italy

The History and Tradition of Accounting in Italy

Italian accounting has a long and honourable tradition of theoretical and applied analysis of the accounting and reporting function perceived and defined much more broadly than in the Anglo-Saxon tradition. The high point of this perhaps is the creation of what is known as Economia Aziendale (EA). The antecedents genesis and later developments are presented here in detail by highly knowledgeable specialists in the field. EA takes as a prerequisite the necessity of the business (entity/azienda) to ensure its own long-run survival. This requires that the necessary resources are retained and preserved so operating capital maintenance by definition future-oriented is essential. It requires a focus on the particular business organization entity-specific and consistent with today's notion of the business model. Entity-specific information relevant to current and future cash flows is a necessary pre-requisite for ensuring long-run survival which historical cost accounting or fair value (being market-specific not entity-specific) satisfactorily achieve. Flexibility of valuation and of reporting always relevant to the specific asset at the specific time in the specific place is a necessary condition for effective management. This is exactly the focus of EA and its analysis and tradition. Scholars and advanced students of international regulation and accounting as well as accounting history will find this an invaluable guide to a vibrant scholarly tradition of great practical relevance today. | The History and Tradition of Accounting in Italy
