The Old Testament: Canon Literature and Theology Collected Essays of John Barton This collection of John Barton's work engages with current concern over the biblical canon in both historical and theological aspects; with literary reading of the Bible and current literary theory as it bears on biblical studies; and with the theological reading and use of the biblical text. John Barton's distinctive writing reflects a commitment to a 'liberal' approach to the Bible which places a high value on traditional biblical criticism and also seeks to show how evocative and full of insight the biblical texts are and how they can contribute to modern theological concerns. This invaluable selection of published writings by one of the leading authorities on biblical text and canon also includes new essays and editorial introductions from the author. | The Old Testament: Canon Literature and Theology Collected Essays of John Barton GBP 51.99 1

John Birchensha: Writings on Music John Birchensha (c. 1605-?1681) is chiefly remembered for the impression that his theories about music made on the mathematicians natural philosophers and virtuosi of the Royal Society in the 1660s and 1670s and for inventing a system that he claimed would enable even those without practical experience of music to learn to compose in a short time by means of 'a few easy certain and perfect Rules'-his most famous composition pupil being Samuel Pepys in 1662. His great aim was to publish a treatise on music in its philosophical mathematical and practical aspects (which would have included a definitive summary of his rules of composition) entitled Syntagma music¦. Subscriptions for this book were invited in 1672-3 and it was due to be published by March 1675; but it never appeared and no final manuscript of it survives. Consequently knowledge about his work has hitherto remained extremely sketchy. Recent research however has brought to light a number of manuscripts which allow us at last to form a more complete view of Birchensha's ideas. Almost none of this material has been previously published. The new items include an autograph treatise of c. 1664 ('A Compendious Discourse of the Principles of the Practicall & Mathematicall Partes of Musick') which Birchensha presented to the natural philosopher Robert Boyle and which covers concisely much of the ground that he intended to cover in Syntagma music¦; a detailed synopsis for Syntagma music¦ which he prepared for a meeting of the Royal Society in February 1676; and an autograph notebook (now in Brussels) containing his six rules of composition with music examples presumably written for a pupil. Bringing all this material together in a single volume will allow scholars to see how Birchensha's rules and theories developed over a period of fifteen years and to gain at least a flavour of the lost Syntagma music¦. | John Birchensha: Writings on Music GBP 48.99 1
Sir John Soane’s Influence on Architecture from 1791 A Continuing Legacy Sir John Soane’s Influence on Architecture from 1791: A Continuing Legacy is the first in-depth study of this eighteenth-century British architect’s impact on the work of others extending globally and still indeed the case over 200 years later. Author Oliver Bradbury presents a compelling argument that the influence of Soane (1753-1837) has persevered through the centuries rather than waning around the time of his death. Through examinations of internationally-renowned architects from Benjamin Henry Latrobe to Philip Johnson as well as a number of not so well known Soanean disciples Bradbury posits that Soane is perhaps second only to Palladio in terms of the longevity of his influence on architecture through the course of more than two centuries from the early 1790s to today concluding with the recent return to pure revivalism. Previous investigations have been limited to focusing on Soane’s late-Georgian and then post-modern influence; this is the first in-depth study of his impact over the course of two centuries. Through this survey Bradbury demonstrates that Soane’s influence has been truly international in the pre-modern era reaching throughout the British Isles and beyond to North America and even colonial Australia. Through his inclusion of select detailed case studies Bradbury contends that Soane’s is a continuing not negated legacy in architecture. | Sir John Soane’s Influence on Architecture from 1791 A Continuing Legacy GBP 46.99 1
Lectures on Technique by Melanie Klein Edited with Critical Review by John Steiner Lectures on Technique by Melanie Klein is based on a series of six lectures given by Melanie Klein to students at the British Psychoanalytical Society in 1936 and repeated several times in subsequent years. They were discovered in the Melanie Klein Archives housed in the Wellcome Medical Library and have been previously described by Elizabeth Spillius but never before published. In this book John Steiner explores what characterises Kleinian Technique how her technique changed over the years what she saw as the correct psychoanalytical attitude and how psychoanalytic technique has changed since Klein’s death. Melanie Klein who moved to England from Berlin in 1927 became one of the leading psychoanalysts following Freud and making an important contribution in the theory and practice of psychoanalysis. A pioneer in child analysis her work remains widely influential throughout the world. This book consists of the full text of the original six lectures accompanied by a critical analysis from John Steiner who is known internationally as a leading Kleinian analyst and writer. Steiner demonstrates the importance of the lectures in understanding Klein’s work and their continued relevance for contemporary psychoanalysis. In addition also published for the first time this book includes annotated transcripts of a preserved recording of a seminar Klein held in 1958 with young analysts of the British Psychoanalytical Society. In this seminar close to the end of her life many of the points made in the earlier lectures were elaborated upon and brought further up to date in light of developments in Klein’s thinking during the intervening years. Featuring rare previously unpublished material Lectures on Technique by Melanie Klein provides a new and significant contribution to understanding of the Kleinian paradigm. It will be essential reading for all psychoanalysts and psychoanalytic psychotherapists interested in and influenced by Klein’s work and legacy. | Lectures on Technique by Melanie Klein Edited with Critical Review by John Steiner GBP 43.99 1
The Musical Human Rethinking John Blacking's Ethnomusicology in the Twenty-First Century The musical human: without a doubt this vision of the human species as naturally musical has become the most enduring legacy John Blacking bequeathed to ethnomusicology. The image aptly embodies his preoccupations which integrated theoretical and methodological issues within the discipline with a deep concern for the physical and psychological well-being of humanity. Blacking believed sincerely in the power of music and he contended that people's general health depended upon the musical opportunities made available to them. For this reason he placed great importance upon ethnomusicology the discipline that investigates the way different societies around the world organize their musical activities and the impact of these diverse alternatives upon the people involved in them. Each essay draws upon distinct aspects of Blacking's writings but complements them with quite different sets of sources. Themes include the role of fieldwork in the postmodern era; the role of music amongst subaltern communities existing in a rapidly changing social environment with particular reference to Vendaland; the manipulation of traditional performance settings in pursuit of political or social strategies; children's music acquisition as an indicator of the innate musical capacity of humans; the biology of music making; the creation of pleasure pain and power during dance; cognitive processes and the social consequences of the power of music and a consideration of the method of applying ethnomusicological research methods to Western art music. In this way the volume provides fresh assessments of Blacking's work taking up his challenge to push the boundaries of ethnomusicology into new territories. | The Musical Human Rethinking John Blacking's Ethnomusicology in the Twenty-First Century GBP 48.99 1
A Reader in Visual Agnosia The case study of John has provided a unique insight into the nature of visual agnosia and more broadly into the underlying processes which support human vision. After suffering a stroke John had problems in recognizing common objects faces seeing colours reading and finding his way around his environment. A Reader in Visual Agnosia brings together the primary scientific papers describing the detailed investigations for each visual problem which the authors carried out with John known as patient HJA. This work was summarised initially in To See But Not To See (1987) and 26 years later in A Case Study in Visual Agnosia Revisited (2013). The chapters are divided into 6 parts corresponding to the key areas of investigation: Integrative visual agnosia Perception of global form Face perception Colour perception Word recognition Changes over time Each part contains a short introduction written by the two leading researchers who worked with John which highlights the relations between the papers and demonstrates the pathway of the case analysis. The Economics of Population Key Classic Writings The economics of population has a long and controversial history as well as an exciting present. Vociferous popular debate public policy and population economics have unduly influenced one another: public debate and policy affect the erection of economists' conclusions just as the results of economists' studies influence debate and popular thought. The words and theories of John Maynard Keynes Thomas R. Malthus John Stuart Mill and Friedrich Engels come to mind immediately. However many writings on population economics had little or no influence on public thought at the time they were written although they may be seen as correct in light of modern developments. In fact many of the ideas contained in these writings were publicly debated but then ignored for a long time reappearing much later or reinvented independently. The Economics of Population edited by Julian L. Simon traces the history of population economics. This is a century-spanning collection of essays from foremost influential economic theorists arranged to illustrate thought development and its numerous reversals. The first section includes essays from Joseph J. Spengler John Graunt William Petty Thomas R. Malthus William Godwin and David Ricardo. Theorists such as Alexander Everett William Peterson Simon Gray Henry C. Carey John Stuart Mill Friedrich Engels Henry George and Charles Fourier are the subject of the volume's second section. Finally Simon covers the effect of population density and cities on productivity and the effect of density on agricultural practices and natural resources. Essays from this section include John Maynard Keynes' Is Britain Overpopulated? and The Economic Consequences of Peace as well as selections from Lionel Robbins George Simmel and Alvin H. Hansen. Simon's long-term focus reflects the evolution of population movements. He does not restrict himself to writings that have been important in the historical chain of intellectual influence. Rather he guides us to key works which shed light on the intellectual history of population economics. Simon includes some essays that while greatly influential can also be seen as fundamentally wrong in light of later work. As such The Economics of Population will be of great value to political economists sociologists of knowledge and historians of ideas. | The Economics of Population Key Classic Writings GBP 51.99 1

Georgian Houses for All First published in 1978 Georgian Houses for All describes how little Gregorian houses came into being and how the original inhabitants used them. Gregorian houses at their smallest and simplest can be seen everywhere in the British Isles – detached semi-detached and joined together in terraces. There are probably still over a million of them built during a period of 130 years without the direct aid of architects. John Woodforde points out that an instinctive wish for a symmetrical front seems to be shown by young children’s drawings of houses these being generally balanced and orderly. The Georgians’ love of symmetry marked in their way of hanging pictures was part of a desire for private order amongst public disorder a desire to have one small sphere in which nature was fully controlled. John Woodforde reminds us that in the present-day return to terrace-house building the Georgian version remains a valuable guide. The book will be of interest to students of architecture urban planning and history. GBP 85.00 1
Victorian Perceptions of Renaissance Architecture In the mid-1880s The Builder an influential British architectural journal published an article characterizing Renaissance architecture as a corrupt bastardization of the classical architecture of Greece and Rome. By the turn of the century however the same journal praised the Renaissance architect Filippo Brunelleschi as the ’Christopher Columbus of modern architecture. ’ Victorian Perceptions of Renaissance Architecture 1850-1914 examines these conflicting characterizations and reveals how the writing of architectural history was intimately tied to the rise of the professional architect and the formalization of architectural education in late nineteenth-century Britain. Drawing on a broad range of evidence including literary texts professional journals university curricula and census records Victorian Perceptions reframes works by seminal authors such as John Ruskin Walter Pater John Addington Symonds and Geoffrey Scott alongside those by architect-authors such as William J. Anderson and Reginald Blomfield within contemporary architectural debates. Relevant for architectural historians as well as literary scholars and those in Victorian studies Victorian Perceptions reassesses the history of Renaissance architecture within the formation of a modern British architectural profession. Evolutionary Naturalism in Victorian Britain The 'Darwinians' and their Critics Scholars have tended to portray T. H. Huxley John Tyndall and their allies as the dominant cultural authority in the second half of the 19th century. Defenders of Darwin and his theory of evolution these men of science are often seen as a potent force for the secularization of British intellectual and social life. In this collection of essays Bernard Lightman argues that historians have exaggerated the power of scientific naturalism to undermine the role of religion in middle and late-Victorian Britain. The essays deal with the evolutionary naturalists especially the biologist Thomas Henry Huxley the physicist John Tyndall and the philosopher of evolution Herbert Spencer. But they look also at those who criticized this influential group of elite intellectuals including aristocratic spokesman A. J Balfour the novelist Samuel Butler and the popularizer of science Frank Buckland. Focusing on the theme of the limitations of the cultural power of evolutionary naturalism the volume points to the enduring strength of religion in Britain in the latter half of the 19th century. | Evolutionary Naturalism in Victorian Britain The 'Darwinians' and their Critics GBP 44.99 1
The Incomparable Hester Santlow A Dancer-Actress on the Georgian Stage In the first full-length study of the English dancer-actress Hester Santlow Moira Goff focuses on her unusual career at Drury Lane between 1706 and 1733. Goff charts Santlow's repertoire and makes extensive use of archival resources to investigate both her dancing and acting skills. Feynman Lectures on Computation Anniversary Edition The last lecture course that Nobel Prize winner Richard P. Feynman gave to students at Caltech from 1983 to 1986 was not on physics but on computer science. The first edition of the Feynman Lectures on Computation published in 1996 provided an overview of standard and not-so-standard topics in computer science given in Feynman’s inimitable style. Although now over 20 years old most of the material is still relevant and interesting and Feynman’s unique philosophy of learning and discovery shines through. For this new edition Tony Hey has updated the lectures with an invited chapter from Professor John Preskill on “Quantum Computing 40 Years Later”. This contribution captures the progress made toward building a quantum computer since Feynman’s original suggestions in 1981. The last 25 years have also seen the “Moore’s law” roadmap for the IT industry coming to an end. To reflect this transition John Shalf Senior Scientist at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory has contributed a chapter on “The Future of Computing beyond Moore’s Law”. The final update for this edition is an attempt to capture Feynman’s interest in artificial intelligence and artificial neural networks. Eric Mjolsness now a Professor of Computer Science at the University of California Irvine was a Teaching Assistant for Feynman’s original lecture course and his research interests are now the application of artificial intelligence and machine learning for multi-scale science. He has contributed a chapter called “Feynman on Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning” that captures the early discussions with Feynman and also looks toward future developments. This exciting and important work provides key reading for students and scholars in the fields of computer science and computational physics. | Feynman Lectures on Computation Anniversary Edition GBP 48.99 1

Sacrifice and the Body Biblical Anthropology and Christian Self-Understanding What is sacrifice? For many people today the word has negative overtones suggesting loss or death or violence. But in religions ancient and modern the word is linked primarily to joyous feasting which puts people in touch with the deepest realities. How has that change of meaning come about? What effect does it have on the way we think about Christianity? How does it affect the way Christian believers think about themselves and God? John Dunnill's study focuses on sacrifice as a physical event uniting worshippers to deity. Bringing together insights from social anthropology biblical studies and Trinitarian theology Dunnill links to debates in sociology and cultural studies as well as the study of liturgy. Through a positive view of sacrifice Dunnill contributes to contemporary Christian debates on atonement and salvation. | Sacrifice and the Body Biblical Anthropology and Christian Self-Understanding GBP 44.99 1
