Philosophy of Mathematics Classic and Contemporary Studies

Philosophy of Mathematics Classic and Contemporary Studies

The philosophy of mathematics is an exciting subject. Philosophy of Mathematics: Classic and Contemporary Studies explores the foundations of mathematical thought. The aim of this book is to encourage young mathematicians to think about the philosophical issues behind fundamental concepts and about different views on mathematical objects and mathematical knowledge. With this new approach the author rekindles an interest in philosophical subjects surrounding the foundations of mathematics. He offers the mathematical motivations behind the topics under debate. He introduces various philosophical positions ranging from the classic views to more contemporary ones including subjects which are more engaged with mathematical logic. Most books on philosophy of mathematics have little to no focus on the effects of philosophical views on mathematical practice and no concern on giving crucial mathematical results and their philosophical relevance consequences reasons etc. This book fills this gap. The book can be used as a textbook for a one-semester or even one-year course on philosophy of mathematics. Other textbooks on the philosophy of mathematics are aimed at philosophers. This book is aimed at mathematicians. Since the author is a mathematician it is a valuable addition to the literature. Mark Balaguer California State University Los Angeles There are not many such texts available for mathematics students. I applaud efforts to foster the dialogue between mathematics and philosophy. Classic Papers in Natural Resource Economics Revisited

Classic Papers in Natural Resource Economics Revisited

Classic Papers in Natural Resource Economics Revisited is the first attempt to bring together a selection of classic papers in natural resource economics alongside reflections by highly regarded professionals about how these papers have impacted the field. The seven papers included in this volume are grouped into five sections representing the five core areas in natural resource economics: the intertemporal problem; externalities and market failure; property rights institutions and public choice; the economics of exhaustible resources; and the economics of renewable resources. The seven papers are written by distinguished economists five of them Nobelists. The papers originally published between 1960 and 2000 addressed key issues in resource production pricing consumption planning management and policy. The original insights fresh perspectives and bold vision embodied in these papers had a profound influence on the readership and they became classics in the field. This is the first attempt to publish original commentaries from a diverse group of scholars to identify probe and analyse the ways in which these papers have impacted and shaped the discourse in natural resource economics. Although directed primarily at an academic audience this book should also be of great appeal to researchers policy analysts and natural resource professionals in general. This book was published as a series of symposia in the Journal of Natural Resources Policy Research.

Social Theory The Multicultural Global and Classic Readings

The Economics of Population Key Classic Writings

The Economics of Population Key Classic Writings

The economics of population has a long and controversial history as well as an exciting present. Vociferous popular debate public policy and population economics have unduly influenced one another: public debate and policy affect the erection of economists' conclusions just as the results of economists' studies influence debate and popular thought. The words and theories of John Maynard Keynes Thomas R. Malthus John Stuart Mill and Friedrich Engels come to mind immediately. However many writings on population economics had little or no influence on public thought at the time they were written although they may be seen as correct in light of modern developments. In fact many of the ideas contained in these writings were publicly debated but then ignored for a long time reappearing much later or reinvented independently. The Economics of Population edited by Julian L. Simon traces the history of population economics. This is a century-spanning collection of essays from foremost influential economic theorists arranged to illustrate thought development and its numerous reversals. The first section includes essays from Joseph J. Spengler John Graunt William Petty Thomas R. Malthus William Godwin and David Ricardo. Theorists such as Alexander Everett William Peterson Simon Gray Henry C. Carey John Stuart Mill Friedrich Engels Henry George and Charles Fourier are the subject of the volume's second section. Finally Simon covers the effect of population density and cities on productivity and the effect of density on agricultural practices and natural resources. Essays from this section include John Maynard Keynes' Is Britain Overpopulated? and The Economic Consequences of Peace as well as selections from Lionel Robbins George Simmel and Alvin H. Hansen. Simon's long-term focus reflects the evolution of population movements. He does not restrict himself to writings that have been important in the historical chain of intellectual influence. Rather he guides us to key works which shed light on the intellectual history of population economics. Simon includes some essays that while greatly influential can also be seen as fundamentally wrong in light of later work. As such The Economics of Population will be of great value to political economists sociologists of knowledge and historians of ideas. | The Economics of Population Key Classic Writings

The Adult Learner The Definitive Classic in Adult Education and Human Resource Development

The Adult Learner The Definitive Classic in Adult Education and Human Resource Development

How do you tailor education to the learning needs of adults? Do they learn differently from children? How does their life experience inform their learning processes? These were the questions at the heart of Malcolm Knowles’ pioneering theory of andragogy which transformed education theory in the 1970s. Understanding these principles is the cornerstone of increasing motivation and enabling adult learners to achieve. The 9th edition of The Adult Learner has been revised to include: Updates to the book to reflect the very latest advancements in the field. Revisions throughout to make it more readable and relevant to your practices. If you are a researcher practitioner or student in education an adult learning practitioner training manager or involved in human resource development this is the definitive book in adult learning you should not be without. | The Adult Learner The Definitive Classic in Adult Education and Human Resource Development

Urban Politics Cities and Suburbs in a Global Age

Urban Politics Cities and Suburbs in a Global Age

Urban Politics blends the most insightful classic and current political science and related literature with current issues in urban affairs. The book’s integrative theme is ‘power ’ demonstrating that the study of urban politics requires an analysist to look beyond the formal institutions and procedures of local government. The book also develops important subthemes: the impact of globalization; the dominance of economic development over competing local policy concerns; the continuing importance of race in the urban arena; local government activism versus the ‘limits’ imposed on local action by the American constitutional system and economic competition; and the impact of national and state government action on cities. Urban Politics engages students with pragmatic case studies and boxed material that use classic and current urban films and TV shows to illustrate particular aspects of urban politics. The book’s substantial concluding discussion of local policies for environmental sustainability and green cities also appeals to today’s students. Each chapter has been thoroughly rewritten to clearly relate the content to current events and academic literature including the following: the importance of the intergovernmental city the role of local governments as active policy actors and vital policy makers even in areas outside traditional municipal policy concerns the prospects for urban policy and change in and beyond the Trump administration including the ways in which urban politics is affected by but not determined by Washington. Mixing classic theory and research on urban politics with the most recent developments and data in urban and metropolitan affairs Urban Politics 10e is an ideal introductory textbook for students of metropolitan and regional politics and policy. The book’s material on citizen participation urban bureaucracy policy analysis and intergovernmental relations also makes the volume an appropriate choice for Urban Administration courses.
