Interpreting and Visualizing Regression Models Using Stata

Interpreting and Visualizing Regression Models Using Stata

Interpreting and Visualizing Regression Models Using Stata Second Edition provides clear and simple examples illustrating how to interpret and visualize a wide variety of regression models. Including over 200 figures the book illustrates linear models with continuous predictors (modeled linearly using polynomials and piecewise) interactions of continuous predictors categorical predictors interactions of categorical predictors and interactions of continuous and categorical predictors. The book also illustrates how to interpret and visualize results from multilevel models models where time is a continuous predictor models with time as a categorical predictor nonlinear models (such as logistic or ordinal logistic regression) and models involving complex survey data. The examples illustrate the use of the margins marginsplot contrast and pwcompare commands. This new edition reflects new and enhanced features added to Stata most importantly the ability to label statistical output using value labels associated with factor variables. As a result output regarding marital status is labeled using intuitive labels like Married and Unmarried instead of using numeric values such as 1 and 2. All the statistical output in this new edition capitalizes on this new feature emphasizing the interpretation of results based on variables labeled using intuitive value labels. Additionally this second edition illustrates other new features such as using transparency in graphics to more clearly visualize overlapping confidence intervals and using small sample-size estimation with mixed models. If you ever find yourself wishing for simple and straightforward advice about how to interpret and visualize regression models using Stata this book is for you.

Environmental Sex Differentiation in Fish

Environmental Sex Differentiation in Fish

Fish constitute an important natural renewable resource and any reduction in their ability to propagate as a result of human interference may have significant socioeconomic consequences. The negative effect of human activity on sex differentiation and reproductive output in fish is so diverse that it has been difficult to encompass it in a single book. This book serves as the first attempt to do so. Unlike in mammals the expression of a host of sex differentiation genes in fish is mostly controlled by environmental factors. Not surprisingly environmental sex differentiation is ubiquitous in fish. Overexploitation by capture fisheries does not disrupt sex differentiation but crowding in aqua-farms does by reducing accessibility to food supply. Some of the man-made chemicals routinely used worldwide mimic endogenous hormones. For example endosulfan which is widely used in developing countries disrupts endogenous hormones and feminizes fish. For the first time this book views endocrine disruption from the point of labile early life and non-labile adult stages. It shows that sex can irreversibly be reversed when exposed to endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) during early labile stages but reversibly impairs reproductive output on exposure to EDCs during non-labile adult stage. A consequence of climate change elevated temperature and declining oxygen and pH levels is that it masculinises genetic female fish. Fish display a remarkable ability to postpone the labile period. Besides postponement some primary and tertiary gonochores have two distinct labile periods amenable to temperature and hormonal manipulations. Hermaphrodites have retained the period until the end of the adult stage and are capable of sex change/reversal more than once in both male and female directions. | Environmental Sex Differentiation in Fish

An Introduction to Acceptance Sampling and SPC with R

An Introduction to Acceptance Sampling and SPC with R

An Introduction to Acceptance Sampling and SPC with R is an introduction to statistical methods used in monitoring controlling and improving quality. Topics covered include acceptance sampling; Shewhart control charts for Phase I studies; graphical and statistical tools for discovering and eliminating the cause of out-of-control-conditions; Cusum and EWMA control charts for Phase II process monitoring; and the design and analysis of experiments for process troubleshooting and discovering ways to improve process output. Origins of statistical quality control and the technical topics presented in the remainder of the book are those recommended in the ANSI/ASQ/ISO guidelines and standards for industry. The final chapter ties everything together by discussing modern management philosophies that encourage the use of the technical methods presented earlier. In the modern world sampling plans and the statistical calculations used in statistical quality control are done with the help of computers. As an open source high-level programming language with flexible graphical output options R runs on Windows Mac and Linux operating systems and has add-on packages that equal or exceed the capability of commercial software for statistical methods used in quality control. In this book we will focus on several R packages. In addition to demonstrating how to use R for acceptance sampling and control charts this book will concentrate on how the use of these specific tools can lead to quality improvements both within a company and within their supplier companies. This would be a suitable book for a one-semester undergraduate course emphasizing statistical quality control for engineering majors (such as manufacturing engineering or industrial engineering) or a supplemental text for a graduate engineering course that included quality control topics.
