Spectral Photon Counting Computed Tomography Technology and Applications Spectral Photon Counting Computed Tomography is a comprehensive cover of the latest developments in the most prevalent imaging modality (x-ray computed tomography (CT)) in its latest incarnation: Spectral Dual-Energy and Photon Counting CT. Disadvantages of the conventional single-energy technique used by CT technology are that different materials cannot be distinguished and that the noise is larger. To address these problems a novel spectral CT concept has been proposed. Spectral Dual-Energy CT (DE-CT) acquires two sets of spectral data and Spectral Photon Counting CT (PC-CT) detects energy of x-ray photons to reveal additional material information of objects by using novel energy-sensitive photon-counting detectors. The K-edge imaging may be a gateway for functional or molecular CT. The book covers detectors and electronics image reconstruction methods image quality assessments a simulation tool nanoparticle contrast agents and clinical applications for spectral CT. | Spectral Photon Counting Computed Tomography Technology and Applications GBP 58.99 1

Warfare and Diplomacy in Pre-Colonial West Africa Originally published in 1976 this book combines detailed technical studies of the diplomacy of the land and waterborne warfare of pre-colonial West Africa. It draws attention to the connexion between these topics as dual aspects of international relations and refers to those parts of West African indigenous diplomacy showing how these resembled and diverged from practice elsewhere. The causes and consequences of West African wars are analysed and the wide range of weaponry armour and transport used by armies is also discussed. Strategy and tactics of the wars in relation to defensive operations are also examined. Throughout the book a considerable body of evidence from many sources is deployed to justify both the factual content and the conclusions which are drawn. | Warfare and Diplomacy in Pre-Colonial West Africa GBP 70.00 1
Clothed in the Body Asceticism the Body and the Spiritual in the Late Antique Era Hunt examines the apparent paradox that Jesus' earthly existence and post resurrection appearances are experienced through consummately physical actions and attributes yet some ascetics within the Christian tradition appear to seek to deny the value of the human body to find it deadening of spiritual life. Hunt considers why the Christian tradition as a whole has rarely managed more than an uneasy truce between the physical and the spiritual aspects of the human person. Why is it that the 'Church' has energetically argued through centuries of ecumenical councils for the dual nature of Christ but seems still unwilling to accept the full integration of physical and spiritual within humanity despite Gregory of Nazianzus's comment that 'what has not been assumed has not been redeemed'? | Clothed in the Body Asceticism the Body and the Spiritual in the Late Antique Era GBP 48.99 1

Decision Modes in Complex Task Environments Despite intense research on decision-making in action we still know little about when decision-makers rely on deliberate vs. intuitive decision-making in decision situations under complexity and uncertainty. Building on default-interventionist dual-processing theory this book studies decision-making modes (deliberate vs. intuitive) in complex task environments contingent on perceived complexity experience and decision style preference. We find that relatively inexperienced decision-makers respond to increases in subjective complexity with an increase in deliberation and tend to follow their decision style preference. Experienced decision-makers are less guided by their decision preference and respond to increases in subjective complexity only minimally. This book contributes to a developing stream of research linking decision-making with intra-personal and environmental properties and fosters our understanding of the conditions under which decision-makers rely on intuitive vs. deliberate decision modes. In doing so we go one step further towards a comprehensive theory of decision-making in action. | Decision Modes in Complex Task Environments GBP 69.99 1

Contested Domains Debates in International Labour Studies Originally published in 1991 this volume discusses the urban working class international migrants and the so-called lumpenproletariat. The book exhibits the fruitful interaction that has taken place between sociological theory new views of the changing world economy and the empirical realities of working class experience and struggles. The dual theme of the book is the control which the state and employers seek to impose and maintain over labouring people and the resistance put up by workers to these often new and unacceptable disciplines. With case studies – both historical and contemporary – drawn from North America Britain and various parts of Africa the author develops an interlocking theory of habituation and resistance. Against the background of profound changes in the global economy Robin Cohen explores ways in which labouring people respond to the structural and managerial constrains on the development of their class consciousness and self-organisation. This will be of interest to urban and industrial sociologists as well as those concerned with comparative social theory and the relationship between developing world and industrialised societies. | Contested Domains Debates in International Labour Studies GBP 80.00 1
Political and Military Sociology an Annual Review Volume 44 Democracy Security and Armed Forces The latest volume of the Political and Military Sociology annual review features empirical research on topics that focus on security military training culture and the challenges of bureaucracy law and violence in democracies. The articles cover an impressive geographic range from Europe to Africa and to the Middle East. Two essays address threats to democratic polities by corrupt governmental and legal institutions and by electoral violence and intimidation. The first argues that a culture of dualism in Greece helps produce problems. The second analyzes the power of military student fraternities in Nigeria arguing that democracy is threatened by these organizations. Two contributors then address the security and military challenges in Iraq. The first argues that successful military advisors must play dual roles as both peacekeeper-diplomats and warriors. The second poses that Iraqi government policies privileging the Shia population have alienated other groups and helped support for groups such as ISIS. The final essay analyzes the acculturation of new soldiers to Zimbabwean military life through the training experiences of recruits. The volume also includes reviews of recent books on military and security matters. | Political and Military Sociology an Annual Review Volume 44 Democracy Security and Armed Forces GBP 84.99 1

Mixed Towns Trapped Communities Historical Narratives Spatial Dynamics Gender Relations and Cultural Encounters in Palestinian-Israeli Towns Modern urban spaces are by definition mixed socio-spatial configurations. In many ways their enduring success and vitality lie in the richness of their ethnic texture and ongoing exchange of economic goods cultural practices political ideas and social movements. This mixture however is rarely harmonious and has often led to violent conflict over land and identity. Focusing on mixed towns in Israel/Palestine this insightful volume theorizes the relationship between modernity and nationalism and the social dynamics which engender and characterize the growth of urban spaces and the emergence therein of inter-communal relations. For more than a century Arabs and Jews have been interacting in the workplaces residential areas commercial enterprises cultural arenas and political theatres of mixed towns. Defying prevailing Manichean oppositions these towns both exemplify and resist the forces of nationalist segregation. In this interdisciplinary volume a new generation of Israeli and Palestinian scholars come together to explore ways in which these towns have been perceived as utopian or dystopian and whether they are best conceptualized as divided dual or colonial. Identifying ethnically mixed towns as a historically specific analytic category this volume calls for further research comparison and debate. | Mixed Towns Trapped Communities Historical Narratives Spatial Dynamics Gender Relations and Cultural Encounters in Palestinian-Israeli Towns GBP 48.99 1

Proportionate Share Impact Fees and Development Mitigation After decades of evolving practice often tested in court development impact fees have become institutionalized in the American planning and local government finance systems. But they remain contentious especially as they continue to evolve. This book is the third in a series of impact fee guidebooks for practitioners following A Practitioner’s Guide to Development Impact Fees and Impact Fees: Proportionate Share Development Fees. Proportionate Share Impact Fees and Development Mitigation is the culmination of the authors’ careers devoted to pioneering applications of the dual rational nexus test. That test requires (1) establishing the rational nexus between the need for infrastructure broadly defined to mitigate the impacts of development and (2) ensuring that development mitigating its infrastructure impacts benefits proportionately. The book elevates professional practice in two ways. First it shows how the rational nexus test can be applied to all forms of development infrastructure impact mitigation. Second it establishes the link between professional ethics and equity as applied to proportionate share impact fees and development mitigation. Women Workers and Race in LIFE Magazine Hansel Mieth’s Reform Photojournalism 1934-1955 The tension between social reform photography and photojournalism is examined through this study of the life and work of German émigré Hansel Mieth (1909-1998) who made an unlikely journey from migrant farm worker to Life photographer. She was the second woman in that role after Margaret Bourke-White. Unlike her colleagues Mieth was a working-class reformer with a deep disdain for Life's conservatism and commercialism. In fact her work often subverted Life's typical representations of women workers and minorities. Some of her most compelling photo essays used skillful visual storytelling to offer fresh views on controversial topics: birth control vivisection labor unions and Japanese American internment during the Second World War. Her dual role as reformer and photojournalist made her a desirable commodity at Life in the late 1930s and early 40s but this role became untenable in Cold War America when her career was cut short. Today Mieth's life and photographs stand as compelling reminders of the vital yet overlooked role of immigrant women in twentieth-century photojournalism. Women Workers and Race in LIFE Magazine draws upon a rich array of primary sources including Mieth's unpublished memoir oral histories and labor archives. The book seeks to unravel and understand the multi-layered often contested stories of the photographer's life and work. It will be of interest to scholars of photography history women's studies visual culture and media history. | Women Workers and Race in LIFE Magazine Hansel Mieth’s Reform Photojournalism 1934-1955 GBP 44.99 1
