Strategies for Growing and Enhancing University-Level Japanese Programs Strategies for Growing and Enhancing University-Level Japanese Programs offers foreign language program managers and directors as well as teachers of less commonly taught languages the insights and proven practical actions they can take to enhance and grow their language programs. Using the Japanese program at UNC Charlotte as the primary case study author Fumie Kato provides step-by-step instructions on how she grew the Japanese program there from 133 students per semester in 2002 to 515 students per semester in 2017; from a program with just one full-time professor and one part-time faculty member to a faculty of seven full-time and three part-time members. While Japanese is the example used in the book the principles can be applied by anyone managing foreign language/less commonly taught language programs who wishes to expand their program and raise their students’ success rates. The book is therefore of interest to instructors coordinators and directors of foreign language education programs throughout the world. GBP 31.99 1

The Science of Higher Education State Higher Education Policy and the Laws of Scale Perennial conclusions from state-by-state funding-per-student analyses of underfunding and weak state commitment have become so common that they have diluted the potency of the argument to state policymakers for more higher education funding. In addition there has been little in the way of testing or questioning the assumptions embedded in traditional funding per student analysis and its accompanying conclusions. As state legislators balance the competing needs of education health transportation and public safety budgets they increasingly ask what return on investment (ROI) they get for the funding they provide including from higher education. The ROI language while potentially unsettling for its corporate-like and neoliberal connotation will persist into the foreseeable future. We must ask questions both of adequacy (How much funding should the states provide?) and benefit (What benefits do states receive for the higher education funding they provide?). The focus on traditional funding per student analysis has remained static for over forty years indicating the need for new ideas and methods to probe questions of adequacy and benefit. The Science of Higher Education is an introduction to a new paradigm that explores state higher education funding enrollment completion and supply (the number and type of institutions in a state) through the lens of what are commonly known as power laws. Power laws explain patterns in biological systems and characteristics of cities. Like cities state higher education systems are complex adaptive systems so it is little surprise that power laws also explain funding enrollment completion and supply. The scale relationships uncovered in the Science of Higher Education suggest the potential benefits state policymakers could derive by emphasizing enrollment completion or capacity policies based on economies of scale marginal benefits and the return state’s get on enrollment and completion for the funding they provide. The various features of state higher education systems that conform to scale patterns do not alone provide definitive answers for appropriate funding levels however. As this book addresses policymakers need to take into account the macro forces from demography to geography and the economy that situate the system as well the interactions between government and market actors that are at the core of every state higher education system and influence the outcomes it achieves. | The Science of Higher Education State Higher Education Policy and the Laws of Scale GBP 31.99 1
The Economics of Water and Waste in Three African Capitals First published in 1997 this volume examines the urban environments of Accra (Ghana) Harare (Zimbabwe) and Gaborone (Botswana). Each was effectively the capital city of a former British colony and hence inherited a concern for public health. Each has made a serious and largely successful effort to provide the public goods necessary for the well-being of their urban population. Each is well above the average for all of Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) in these respects. However the GDP per capita varies significantly between these three countries. Differences in standard of living are similarly evident. The authors focus intensively on public policies that determine who gets what how they get it and what price they pay. | The Economics of Water and Waste in Three African Capitals GBP 31.99 1

Revival: Organisational Prosecutions (2001) This title was first published in 2001. The central theme of this book is the activity of the multifarious agencies local and central government departments private companies and organizations which act as prosecutors in the branch of the criminal justice system which deals with 95 per cent of all offences: the magistrates' court. There are over 30 prosecuting organizations (21 are featured in this text) which act regularly in over 400 courthouses in England and Wales. This activity involving many people and a large amount of resources accounts for approximately one fifth of all activity in the criminal courts and yet almost no research has been conducted in this area. Based on a year's extensive study of all of the organization prosecutions brought before three magistrates' courts in different regions the text analyzes a number of important issues including the different approaches taken by the different organizations their conviction rates and the type of sentencing used for different sorts of cases. | Revival: Organisational Prosecutions (2001) GBP 21.99 1
China's Grain Economy The Challenge of Feeding More Than a Billion This book was originally pubished in 2000. China is the largest developing country in the world and is still heavily based on agriculture. Currently about 70 per cent of China's total of more than one bilion people live in rural areas and about half of the total national labour force is involved in agricultural activities. It is clear that agriculture is the foundation for the development of the Chinese national economy. Within agriculture the grain economy is the most important sector: indeed it has been recognised as a treasure in managing the country by all past Chinese dynasties. Ensuring enough grain supply to meet the demands of such a huge population seems to be a long-term goal for the Chinese government and this book explores whether China will be able to produce enough grain to keep pace with its population increases. | China's Grain Economy The Challenge of Feeding More Than a Billion GBP 21.99 1
Human Factors and Aerospace Safety An International Journal: Volume 1 This title was first published in 2001. There have been significant advances in the engineering design and production standards of the hardware and electronics in commercial aircraft. It is now uncommon for the principal (or sole) cause of an aircraft accident to be a component failure. Human error is now implicated in up to 80 per cent of all civil and military aviation accidents. The human being is now arguably the least reliable component left in the system. This basic premise forms the basis for this international journal. The journal focuses specifically on the human element in the aerospace system and its role in either causing accidents or incidents or in promoting safety. The journal solicits contributions from both academic researchers and practitioners from industry. Human factors and safety are applied sciences and this is reflected in the tone and composition of the papers in the journal. | Human Factors and Aerospace Safety An International Journal: Volume 1 GBP 21.99 1

China's Rural Market Development in the Reform Era The rural market in China is not only the venue where 60 per cent of the country's 1. 3 billion inhabitants buy their daily necessities and sell agricultural products but also a key area of conflict between government control and liberalization policies. Previous research on the topic has adopted a purely economic perspective focusing on macro issues such as price control and grain procurement. This book focuses instead on peasants - the major participants in rural marketing activities. Illustrated by two comparative case studies with a diverse level of development from the Pearl River Delta - one of the most prosperous regions in coastal China - this book investigates the market hierarchy its change of functions and the interactions between peasants and market outlets. In doing so it shows how China's rural market district has changed since the Reform and how these changes affect the marketing activities of peasants. | China's Rural Market Development in the Reform Era GBP 38.99 1
The Rise of Catalan Independence Spain’s Territorial Crisis As recently as the mid-2000s Catalonia was described and analysed by scholars as exhibiting a non-secessionist nationalism and was seen within Europe and beyond as a role model for successful devolution which had much to teach other parts of the world. The Spanish state seemed to be on a journey towards an authentic federal order and was generally admired. However the new century has been marked by an ever-growing independence movement with 47. 8 per cent of Catalonia voting in favour of independence in September 2015. Pro-independence mobilization has produced a rupture in political relations with the rest of Spain leading to a sovereignty struggle with Madrid. This book explores how an accumulation of long- medium- and short-term factors have produced the current situation and why the Spanish territorial model has been unable or possibly unwilling to respond. The Catalan question is not purely a Spanish problem: it has direct implications for the traditional nation-state model in Europe and beyond. | The Rise of Catalan Independence Spain’s Territorial Crisis GBP 42.99 1

Financing Healthcare in China Towards universal health insurance China’s current social medical insurance system has nominally covered more than 95 per cent of 1. 4 billion population in China and is moving towards the ambitious goal of universal health insurance coverage. Challenges posed by a rapidly ageing population an inherently discriminatory design of the health insurance system the disorder of drug distribution system and an immature legal system constrain the Chinese government from realizing its goal of universal health insurance coverage in the long run. This book uses a refined version of historical institutionalism to critically examine China's pathway to universal health insurance coverage since the mid-1980s. It pays crucial attention to the processes of transforming China's healthcare financing system into the basic social medical insurance system alongside rapid socio-economic changes. Financing Healthcare in China will interest researchers and government and think-tank officials interested in the state of healthcare reforms in China. Healthcare specialists outside of East Asia may also be interested in its general study of healthcare in developing countries. New Actors and Alliances in Development This collection brings together an interdisciplinary group of scholars exploring how development financing and interventions are being shaped by a wider and more complex platform of actors than usually considered in the existing literature. The contributors also trace a changing set of key relations and alliances in development – those between business and consumers; NGOs and celebrities; philanthropic organizations and the state; diaspora groups and transnational advocacy networks; ruling elites and productive capitalists; and between ‘new donors’ and developing country governments. Despite the diversity of these actors and alliances several commonalities arise: they are often based on hybrid transnationalism and diffuse notions of development responsibility; rather than being new per se they are newly being studied as engaging in practices that are now coming to be understood as ‘development’; and they are limited in their ability to act as agents of development by their lack of accountability or pro-poor commitment. The articles in this collection point to images and representations as increasingly important in development ‘branding’ and suggest fruitful new ground for critical development studies. The Low-Carbon Good Life The Low-Carbon Good Life is about how to reverse and repair four interlocking crises arising from modern material consumption: the climate crisis growing inequality biodiversity loss and food-related ill-health. Across the world today and throughout history good lives are characterised by healthy food connections to nature being active togetherness personal growth a spiritual framework and sustainable consumption. A low-carbon good life offers opportunities to live in ways that will bring greater happiness and contentment. Slower ways of living await. A global target of no more than one tonne of carbon per person would allow the poorest to consume more and everyone to find our models of low-carbon good lives. But dropping old habits is hard and large-scale impacts will need fresh forms of public engagement and citizen action. Local to national governments need to act; equally they need pushing by the power and collective action of citizens. Innovative and engaging and written in a style that combines storytelling with scientific evidence this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of climate change sustainability environmental economics and sustainable consumption as well as non-specialist readers concerned about the climate crisis. The Latin American Development Debate Neostructuralism Neomonetarism And Adjustment Processes In the 1980s Latin America experienced its second worst economic crisis of the century; today the average per capita income is about 10 percent less than a decade ago. Because the crisis affected all Latin American countries regardless of their economic policies the period has become known as the lost decade in Latin America. In this book eminent economists from the region reexamine strategies of development—structuralism versus monetarism liberalism versus statism growth versus equity—in light of new theoretical knowledge and recent economic events. The essays offer a complex interpretation of development problems and seek to explain how different schools of thought could be compatible and how old debates must be recast in the light of structural changes in Latin American economies. In addition contributors critically review the adjustment processes applied in various countries. Together the chapters offer a penetrating analysis of what went wrong in Latin America in the 1980s and a careful assessment of economic measures and policies that might prove viable in promoting stable and growing economies democratic regimes and social justice. | The Latin American Development Debate Neostructuralism Neomonetarism And Adjustment Processes GBP 27.99 1
Security Development and Nation-Building in Timor-Leste A Cross-sectoral Assessment Despite Timor-Leste’s high expectations when it became independent from Indonesia in 2002 the country is ranked among the least developed countries in the world. It has found itself at the centre of international attention in the last decade with one of the biggest interventions in UN history as well as receiving amongst the highest per capita rates of bilateral assistance in the Asia-Pacific region. This book draws together the perspectives of practitioners policy-makers and academics on the international efforts to rebuild one of the world’s newest nations. The contributors consider issues of peace-building security and justice sector reform as well as human security in Timor-Leste locating these in the broader context of building nation stability and development. The book includes two demographic studies that can be used to critically examine the nation’s possible future. Risky Agricultural Markets Price Forecasting And The Need For Intervention Policies This book shows how decisions made by individual farmers influence the efficiency of agricultural markets. Unless farmers properly take account of the correlation between prices and yields in forming their price forecasts competitive markets will often be socially inefficient leading to misallocation of resources. The authors demonstrate that a simple and practical price forecasting rule based on expected per unit revenue is generally adequate to ensure efficient market behavior. Time-series data from various countries are used to test the hypothesis that market supply is influenced by the correlation of price and yield as well as by lagged market prices . The importance of market inefficiencies in risky situations is shown to depend on the variability of yields the nature of farmers'price forecasting behavior the degree of private risk aversion and the elasticity of demand. The authors suggest and evaluate three basic policy approaches governments may take when confronted with very inefficient markets-establishing production quotas improving market information services and implementing price stabilization schemes. They conclude by discussing implications of the study for the specification of agricultural supply models and for the economic appraisal of risky investment projects. | Risky Agricultural Markets Price Forecasting And The Need For Intervention Policies GBP 39.99 1
Never Again Rock Against Racism and the Anti-Nazi League 1976-1982 By 1976 the National Front had become the fourth largest party in Britain. In a context of national decline racism and fears that the country was collapsing into social unrest the Front won 19 per cent of the vote in elections in Leicester and 100 000 votes in London. In response an anti-fascist campaign was born which combined mass action to deprive the Front of public platforms with a mass cultural movement. Rock Against Racism brought punk and reggae bands together as a weapon against the right. At Lewisham in August 1977 fighting between the far right and its opponents saw two hundred people arrested and fifty policemen injured. The press urged the state to ban two rival sets of dangerous extremists. But as the papers took sides so did many others who determined to oppose the Front. Through the Anti-Nazi League hundreds of thousands of people painted out racist graffiti distributed leaflets and persuaded those around them to vote against the right. This combined movement was one of the biggest mass campaigns that Britain has ever seen. Mobility and Identity in Europe A Mobile Ethnographic Approach This book demonstrates that mobility in Europe is not a synonym for European mobility showing how certain mobile individuals are more likely to develop an explicitly European identity than others. Through a series of mobile ethnographic accounts with truck drivers musicians and MEPs the author lays out the complexities behind assumptions about mobility and European identity providing a clear contrast between individuals for whom this process certainly is true and others who in spite of their high levels of mobility do not consider themselves European or for whom the notion of being European is simply insignificant. Ultimately as this book shows the enactment of a European identity through practices of mobility has more to do with social class than with a mobile condition per se with mobility in Europe being transformed into European mobility only when it empowers individuals solidifying their elevated position in the social pyramid. An account of European identity and its connection to mobility and notions of class Mobility and Identity in Europe also explores the ways in which mobile ethnography can be practised as a method and what conclusions can be drawn from it. As such it will appeal to scholars and students of sociology anthropology and geography. | Mobility and Identity in Europe A Mobile Ethnographic Approach GBP 38.99 1
