Fine Resolution Remote Sensing of Species in Terrestrial and Coastal Ecosystems

Fine Resolution Remote Sensing of Species in Terrestrial and Coastal Ecosystems

Detailed and accurate information on the spatial distribution of individual species over large spatial extents and over multiple time periods is critical for rapid response and effective management of environmental change. The twenty first century has witnessed a rapid development in both fine resolution sensors and statistical theories and techniques. These innovations hold great potential for improved accuracy of species mapping using remote sensing. Fine Resolution Remote Sensing of Species in Terrestrial and Coastal Ecosystems is a collection of eight cutting-edge studies of fine spatial resolution remote sensing including species mapping of biogenic and coral reefs seagrasses salt and freshwater marshes and grasslands. The studies illustrate the power of fine resolution imagery for species identification as well as the value of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery as an ideal source of high-quality reference data at the species level. The studies also highlight the benefit of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data for species identification and how this varies depending on the species of interest as well as the nature of the context in which the species is found. The broad range of applications explored in the book demonstrates the major contribution of remote sensing to species-level terrestrial and coastal ecosystem studies as well as the potential for future advances. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Remote Sensing.

Remote Sensing of Night-time Light

Remote Sensing of Night-time Light

Satellite images acquired at night provide a visually arresting perspective of the Earth and the human activities that light up the otherwise mostly dark Earth. These night-time light satellite images can be compiled into a geospatial time series that represent an invaluable source of information for both the natural and social sciences. Night-time light remote sensing has been shown to be particularly useful for a range of natural science and social science applications including studies relating to urban development demography sociology fishing activity light pollution and the consequences of civil war. Key sensors for these time-series include the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program’s Operational Linescan System (DMSP/OLS) and the Suomi National Polar-orbiting Partnership Satellite’s Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite Day/Night Band (Suomi NPP/VIIRS DNB). An increasing number of alternative sources are also available including high spatial resolution and multispectral sensors. This book captures key methodological issues associated with pre-processing night-time light data documents state of the art analysis methods and explores a wide range of applications. Major sections focus on NPP/VIIRS DNB processing; inter-calibration between NPP/VIIRS and DMPS/OLS; applications associated with socio-economic activities applications in monitoring urbanization; and fishing activity monitoring. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Remote Sensing. | Remote Sensing of Night-time Light

Igniting Justice and Progressive Power The Partnership for Working Families Cities

Igniting Justice and Progressive Power The Partnership for Working Families Cities

A progressive resurgence is happening across the United States. This book shows how long-lasting coalitions have built progressive power from the regional level on up. Anchored by the think and act affiliate organizations of the Partnership for Working Families (PWF) these regional power building projects are putting in place the vision policy agenda political savvy and grassroots mobilization needed for progressive governance. Through six sections the book explores how Partnership for Working Families projects are a core part of the defeat of the right-wing in states such as California; the challenge to corporate neoliberalism in traditionally liberal areas; and contests for power in such formally solid red states as Arizona Georgia and Colorado. This book considers how these PWF groups work on economic racial and environmental justice challenges equitable development and other critical issues. It addresses how at their core they bring together labor community environmental and faith-based organizations and the coalitions and campaigns that they developed have won and continue to win substantial victories for their communities. Igniting Justice and Progressive Power will be of interest to activists and concerned citizens looking to understand how lasting political change actually happens as well as all scholars and students of social work urban geography political sociology community development social movements and political science more broadly. | Igniting Justice and Progressive Power The Partnership for Working Families Cities

US–China Foreign Relations Power Transition and its Implications for Europe and Asia

This book examines the power transition between the US and China and the implications for Europe and Asia in a new era of uncertainty. The volume addresses the impact that the rise of China has on the United States Europe transatlantic relations and East Asia. China is seeking to use its enhanced power position to promote new ambitions; the United States is adjusting to a new superpower rivalry; and the power shift from the West to the East is resulting in a more peripheral role for Europe in world affairs. Featuring essays by prominent Chinese and international experts the book examines the US–China rivalry the changing international system grand strategies and geopolitics foreign policy geo-economics and institutions and military and technological developments. The chapters examine how strategic security and military considerations in this triangular relationship are gradually undermining trade and economics reversing the era of globalization and contributing to the breakdown of the US-led liberal order and institutions that will be difficult to rebuild. The volume also examines whether the adversarial antagonism in US–China relations the tension in transatlantic ties and the increasing rivalry in Europe–China relations are primarily resulting from leaders’ ambitions or structural power shifts. This book will be of much interest to students of Asian security US foreign policy European politics and International Relations in general. | US–China Foreign Relations Power Transition and its Implications for Europe and Asia

The Second Partition of Palestine Hamas–Fatah Struggle for Power

The Second Partition of Palestine Hamas–Fatah Struggle for Power

This book examines the factors and issues responsible for the intra-Palestinian conflict that has undermined the strength and vitality of the struggle for liberation against the state of Israel. It explores how the ideological incompatibility and competition for political primacy account for the Hamas–Fatah conflict entailing the risk of partition of Palestine even before it takes shape as an independent sovereign entity. It analyzes the developments since the signing of the September 1993 Oslo Accord and discusses themes such as the background of Palestinian politics; the role of Fatah; the rise of Hamas as Fatah’s political rival; the Hamas–Fatah struggle for power; and the role played by the international community including by the US and the European Union. The study deals with the various facets of territorial and political challenges faced by the rival Palestinian actions; the failure of the reconciliation efforts by Egypt and Yemen; the stalled peace process in the West Bank and Gaza Strip; the emergence of the Islamic resistance movement and secular nationalist party; and the political and ideological shifts in Palestinian politics. Comprehensive and topical this book will be useful to scholars and researchers of West Asian studies peace and conflict studies politics and international relations foreign policy political studies area studies and strategic and defence studies. | The Second Partition of Palestine Hamas–Fatah Struggle for Power

Economics and Power A Marxist Critique

Economics and Power A Marxist Critique

In the economic debate power is defined and studied mainly as an interpersonal relation occurring out of perfect competition. This is a consequence of the combination of methodological individualism and the assumption of competition as a natural and everlasting coordinating mechanism operating without any sort of coercion. This methodology however is not adequate to analyze the forms of social coercion that characterize capitalism. Economics and Power criticizes the main theories of power developed in economic literature analyzing ultraliberal contractualism to radical political economics and ultimately suggesting a Marxist conception of power and coercion in capitalism. Palermo’s ontological argument is rooted in the philosophy of ‘critical realism’. This unique volume presents his main finding as being that the essential coercive mechanism of capitalism is competition. Capitalist power is not caused by a lack of competition but by the central role it plays in this mode of production. Following this the chapters reconstruct a Marxian conception of power where it is analyzed as a social relation and argues that perfect competition does in fact exist under the disguise of capitalist power. This book criticizes the construct of power and the underlying ideas surrounding perfect competition. This book is of interest to those who study political economy as well as economic theory and philosophy. | Economics and Power A Marxist Critique
