The Ideal of the University The Ideal of the University is a lucid comprehensive analysis of the rationale principles and presuppositions that make contemporary universities what they are. The book begins with four sharp carefully delineated models of a university. After analyzing such controversial issues as the role of grading in the university and the myth of value neutrality. Wolff turns to the crucial question of how the university should be governed. He argues for a radical reconstruction based on a social contract that would place ultimate authority in the hands of the faculty and students. The book concludes with a series of practical proposals for Utopian reform including such provocative recommendations as a variable-length ungraded undergraduate program and elimination of the Ph. D. degree. In his introduction to this new edition Wolff expands upon his original speculations to argue in substantive detail for the liberating potential of the liberal arts. Drawing upon Freud and Marcuse Wolff proposes that literature art and philosophy embody a promise of gratification that engenders a negative critique of the social and cultural status quo. The rationale for the liberal arts university is society's need for a reservoir of critical thinking that is the motor of social economic and political progress. Elegantly written and passionately argued; The Ideal of the University is essential reading for educators and sociologists. GBP 130.00 1
Lactic acid fermentation of human excreta for agricultural application Human excreta is a valuable fertilizer for improving soil quality and crop productivity with a potential to replace or complement the mineral fertilizers. The main challenges related to human excreta regarding agricultural applications are microbial contamination risks loss of nutrients and odor issues. Fertilization by lacto-fermented faeces supplemented by biochar has benefits such as improved soil bulk density nitrate and potassium concentrations as well as the yield and yield components of corn compared to untreated simple stored faeces urine cattle manure and unfertilized controls. Even though the mineral fertilizer produced corn with significantly higher height and leaf length it did not add significantly higher yields than lacto-fermented faeces supplemented by biochar. A faeces treatment process by combined lacto-fermentation with thermophilic composting and biochar supplementation had better reduction of coliforms Escherichia coli Enterococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens and higher germination of radish and growth of tomatoes than combined lacto-fermentation with vermicomposting. Urine lacto-fermentation contributed to a pH reduction below 4 a decrease in the ammonium concentration and odor strength as well as an increase in the germination rates compared to untreated stored urine. The results of this study provide important information that can set the basis for scaling up a sustainable technology for the treatment of source separated human excreta while improving its potential for resource recovery. | Lactic acid fermentation of human excreta for agricultural application GBP 89.99 1
Pencils of Cubics and Algebraic Curves in the Real Projective Plane Pencils of Cubics and Algebraic Curves in the Real Projective Plane thoroughly examines the combinatorial configurations of n generic points in RP². Especially how it is the data describing the mutual position of each point with respect to lines and conics passing through others. The first section in this book answers questions such as can one count the combinatorial configurations up to the action of the symmetric group? How are they pairwise connected via almost generic configurations? These questions are addressed using rational cubics and pencils of cubics for n = 6 and 7. The book’s second section deals with configurations of eight points in the convex position. Both the combinatorial configurations and combinatorial pencils are classified up to the action of the dihedral group D8. Finally the third section contains plentiful applications and results around Hilbert’s sixteenth problem. The author meticulously wrote this book based upon years of research devoted to the topic. The book is particularly useful for researchers and graduate students interested in topology algebraic geometry and combinatorics. Features: Examines how the shape of pencils depends on the corresponding configurations of points Includes topology of real algebraic curves Contains numerous applications and results around Hilbert’s sixteenth problem About the Author: Séverine Fiedler-le Touzé has published several papers on this topic and has been invited to present at many conferences. Natural Products Alternate Therapeutic as Quorum Sensing (QS) Inhibitors Microbial biofilm plays an important role in the life cycle of microorganisms surviving in diverse and harsh environments such as extremes of temperatures pH salinity nutrient scarcity etc. Biofilm formation is a survival strategy adopted by microorganisms allowing colonization in new niches by dispersal of microbes from the microbial clusters embedded within an outer polymer layer produced by the microorganism itself. This layer comprises of extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) that helps the indwelling microbes to grow and divide in a protected environment against invaders like antimicrobial agents surfactant biocides and phagocytic cells of host organisms. Thus EPS matrix prevents the penetration of antimicrobials thereby allowing the indwelling microbes to survive and give rise to antimicrobial resistance posing threat to human health. The present book highlights a detailed analysis of the mechanism of biofilm formation in both Gram positive and Gram-negative bacteria and the role of quorum sensing signaling mechanism in the genetic regulation pathway. The book titled Natural Products: Alternative therapeutics as Quorum Sensing (QS) inhibitors provides a detailed and systematic review of mechanism of quorum sensing in both Gram positive and Gram-negative bacteria and alternative pharmacological developments as a potent solution to the rise of antimicrobial resistance during biofilm formation. Features: A systematic overview of the mechanism of quorum sensing in the development of microbial biofilms Biofilm formation and its role in the emergence of antimicrobial resistance Recent pharmacological development of antibiofilm remedies involving biogenic compounds This book serves as a reference book for researchers investigating the progression of events during microbial biofilm formation starting from the genetic cascade regulating quorum sensing to secretion of autoinducers and design of safer methodologies for the successful eradication of microbial biofilm. The Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha 1929-1942 A Study of an Indian Peasant Movement On December 5th 1920 in Patna the Dasnami sannyasi Sahajanand Saraswati encountered Mahatma Gandhi for the first time. Sahajanand was already known in social-reform circles in Bihar as an energetic activist and educator working to promote Bhumihar Brahman identity. Inspired by the Mahatma’s radical reformulation of Indian nationalism ‘the Swami’ (as Sahajanand would soon come to be known) threw himself into nationalist politics and the Indian National Congress. Within a decade moved by the plight of tenant-farmers struggling against excessive rent demands and abusive landlord ‘exactions’ the Swami had spearheaded the formation of the Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha. This organization quickly became the largest organization of its kind in India catapulting the Swami onto the national stage. By the early mid-1930s the Swami had publicly broken with both the Mahatma and the ‘Gandhians’ and had made common cause with the left wing of the Congress. Later as the storm clouds of World War II gathered on the horizon he joined forces with the Forward Bloc and the Communist Party of India. By the time of his death in 1950 the Swami disillusioned with politics had dissociated himself from all parties. This pioneering 1961 study by Walter Hauser tracks the history of the Bihar peasant movement as it both influenced and was buffeted by national and international politics. Hauser offers here a penetrating analysis of the character of the movement and the mind of its leader as he grappled with and gravitated toward Marxism-Leninism in the 1930s and 1940s. Initially written as a Ph. D. dissertation at the University of Chicago Hauser’s path-breaking Bihar Provincial Kisan Sabha 1929-1942 is now being published in its entirety for the first time. The volume includes a ‘Foreword’ by one of Hauser’s many students William R. Pinch. Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics An Introduction with Applications Nonequilibrium statistical mechanics (NESM) practically synonymous with time-dependent statistical mechanics (TDSM) is a beautiful and profound subject vast in scope diverse in applications and indispensable in understanding the changing natural phenomena we encounter in the physical chemical and biological world. Although time dependent phenomena have been studied from antiquity the modern subject the nonequilibrium statistical mechanics has its genesis in Boltzmann’s 1872 classic paper that aimed at extending Maxwell’s kinetic theory of gases by including intermolecular interactions. Subsequent development of the subject drew upon the seminal work of Einstein and Langevin on Brownian motion Rayleigh and Stokes on hydrodynamics and on the works of Onsager Prigogine Kramers Kubo Mori and Zwanzig. One major goal of this book is to develop and present NESM in an organized fashion so that students can appreciate and understand the flow of the subject from postulates to practical uses. This book takes the students on a journey from fundamentals to applications mostly using simple mathematics and fundamental concepts. With the advent of computers and computational packages and techniques a deep intuitive understanding can allow the students to tackle fairly complex problems like proteins in lipid membranes or solvation of ions in electrolytes used in batteries. The subject is still evolving rapidly with forays into complex biological events and materials science. Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics: An Introduction with Applications is thus an introductory text that aims to provide students with a background and skill essential to study and understand time-dependent (relaxation) phenomena. It will allow students to calculate transport properties like diffusion and conductivity. The book also teaches the methods to calculate reaction rate on a multi-dimensional energy surface in another such application. For a beginner in the field especially for one with an aim to study chemistry and biology and also physics one major difficulty faced is a lack of organization of the available study material. Since NESM is a vast subject with many different theoretical tools the above poses a problem. This book lays the foundations towards understanding time- dependent phenomena in a simple and systematic fashion. It is accessible to students and researchers who have basic training in physics and mathematics. The book can be used to teach advanced undergraduates. Some involved topics like the projection operator technique and mode coupling theory are more suitable for Ph. D. level. | Nonequilibrium Statistical Mechanics An Introduction with Applications GBP 89.99 1
Neuromuscular Fundamentals How Our Musculature is Controlled This book is rather unique in its approach and coverage. The approach is essentially that of an engineering textbook emphasizing the quantitative aspects and highlighting the fundamentals and basic concepts involved. The coverage progresses in a logical and systematic manner from the subcellular starting with the electrophysiology of the cell membrane then proceeding to synapses neurons and muscle before considering neuronal motor ensembles and the neuromuscular system as a whole. Simple clear and comprehensive explanations are given throughout. After an introductory chapter on some background material in biology biophysics and chemical kinetics a substantial part of the book (Chapters 2-8) necessarily covers in considerable detail the basic components and processes that underlie the electrical and associated activities of the nervous system. The remaining chapters of the book (Chapters 9-13) focus on the neuromuscular system starting with the structure of muscle cells the generation of force by muscular contraction and muscle receptors. The last chapter examines aspects of the control of movement motor learning and memory the maintenance of posture and locomotion and critically examines some of the theories that have been advanced to explain how movement is controlled. The book is intended for undergraduate or graduate students in the natural sciences mathematics or engineering who seek a deeper understanding of the fundamentals of neuroscience and the somatomotor system in accordance with the aforementioned objectives. The book can serve as a textbook for a one-semester course on the neuromuscular system or as a reference in a more general course on neuroscience. Provides a thorough analytical treatment of membrane electrophysiology starting from the first principles Emphasizes strongly the basic and fundamental concepts throughout Discusses thoroughly the essential features and properties of the basic constituents of the nervous system that is neurons and synapses including the neuromuscular junction Explains the main aspects of posture locomotion and control of movement Includes practice problems throughout the text and a solutions manual will be available for adopting professors Nassir Sabah is professor of biomedical engineering in the electrical and computer engineering department at the American University of Beirut Lebanon.
