Nero Caesar Augustus Emperor of Rome Propelled to power by the age of 17 by an ambitious mother self-indulgent to the point of criminality inadequate paranoid and the perpetrator of heinous crimes including matricide and fratricide and deposed and killed by 31 Nero is one of Rome’s most infamous Emperors. But has history treated him fairly? Or is the popular view of Nero as a capricious and depraved individual a travesty of the truth and a gross injustice to Rome's fifth emperor? This new biography will look at Nero’s life with fresh eyes. While showing the man 'warts and all' it also caste a critical eye on the 'libels' which were perpetrated on him such as claiming he was a madman many of which were most probably made up to suit the needs of the Flavians who had overthrown his dynasty. | Nero Caesar Augustus Emperor of Rome GBP 130.00 1

Letters from India The Correspondence of Lady Susan Ramsay 1854–1856 This fascinating volume reproduces the letters and journal of Lady Susan Ramsay (1837-1898) the elder daughter of the Marquess of Dalhousie Governor-General of India from 1848 to 1856. The correspondence was written over a two-year period: commencing with Susan’s positive response to her father’s request that she join him in Calcutta following the death of her mother; and concluding with Susan’s arrival with her father at Southampton. Lady Susan was still only 17 when she arrived in India and was therefore the youngest person to take up the role of vicereine of India. Her letters and journal represent the unique viewpoint of a highly intelligent witty articulate and unprejudiced young woman expressed from locations that range from Osborne on the Isle of Wight to Seringapatam in Mysore. The detail maturity and inventive quality of her writing invites comparison with that of Emily Eden Emily Metcalfe Charlotte Canning and other prominent early Victorian women. Accompanied by extensive introductions and annotations by Ross Nelson this volume will be of great interest to students and scholars of Imperial History. | Letters from India The Correspondence of Lady Susan Ramsay 1854–1856 GBP 110.00 1

Entryism and the Revolutionary Socialist Left in Britain This book examines entryism in the context of the revolutionary socialist left in Britain from the inception of the Communist Party of Great Britain in 1920 to the departure of Militant from the Labour Party in 1992. Entryism is a tactic of penetration of a political party by another aimed at accomplishing objectives the nature of which can change depending on the type of entry. This work shows to what extent there is not one type of entryism but several. The adopted methodology is chronological with introductory chapters that study the context and the previous partial-only attempts to define entryism. The first part of the volume is dedicated to the relationship between the Communist Party of Great Britain and the Labour Party up until the middle of the 20th century. The following two parts are dedicated to British Trotskyists before and after the Second World War. In total 17 organisations that have practiced entryism are examined. Through their objectives practices and results this work intends to formulate an exhaustive typology of the tactic which fills a definitional gap in political science and covers an aspect of Labour’s History that has only been partially covered. This volume will be of use to students and scholars interested in the history of the Labour Party and the Far Left in the United Kingdom. | Entryism and the Revolutionary Socialist Left in Britain GBP 130.00 1

Classical Theism New Essays on the Metaphysics of God This volume provides a contemporary account of classical theism. It features 17 original essays from leading scholars that advance the discussion of classical theism in new and interesting directions. It’s safe to say that classical theism—the view that God is simple omniscient and the greatest possible being—is no longer the assumed view in analytic philosophy of religion. It is often dismissed as being rooted in outdated metaphysical systems of the sort advanced by ancient and medieval philosophers. The main purpose of this volume is twofold: to provide a contemporary account of what classical theism is and to advance the scholarly discussion about classical theism. In Section I the contributors offer a clear and cutting-edge account of the nature and existence of the God and the historical and theological foundations of classical theism. Section II contains chapters on a variety of topics such as whether classical theism’s doctrine of simplicity needs revision whether simplicity is compatible with the Christian doctrine of the Incarnation and whether the hypothesis of a multiplicity of divine ideas is consistent with divine simplicity among others. Classical Theism will appeal to scholars and advanced students in the philosophy of religion who are interested in the nature of God. Children's Work Schooling And Welfare In Latin America From the 1980s through the 1990s children in many areas of the world benefited from new opportunities to attend school but they also faced new demands to support their families because of continuing and for many worsening poverty. Children's Work Schooling And Welfare In Latin America is a comparative study of children ages 12-17 in three different Latin American societies. Using nationally-representative household surveys from Chile Peru and Mexico and repeatedly over different survey years David Post documents tendencies for children to become economically active to remain in school or to do both. The survey data analyzed illustrates the roles of family and regional poverty and parental resources in determining what children did with their time in each country. However rather than to treat children's activities merely as demographic phenomena or in isolation of the policy environment Post also scrutinizes the international differences in education policies labor law welfare spending and mobilization for children's rights. Children's Work shows that child labor will not vanish of its own accord nor follow a uniform path even within a common geographic region. Accordingly there is a role for welfare policy and for popular mobilization. Post indicates that even when children attend school as in Peru or Mexico many students will continue to work to support the family. If the consequence of their work is to impede their educational success then schools will need to attend to a new dimension of inequality: that between part-time and full-time students. GBP 130.00 1

Risk and Insurance in Construction The new 3rd edition of Nael Bunni’s Risk and Insurance in Construction now co-authored with Lydia Bunni explains the need for insurance in construction and engineering projects and why it must be incorporated into the Conditions of Contract for such projects. It is unique in bringing together the background of the two topics of 'risk' and 'construction insurance' explaining the flow and the interaction between them and then dealing with how they have been used to formulate the 2017 FIDIC Suite of Contracts and the 2021 Green Book. This edition has been fully updated and new chapters deal with the latest definitions of 'risk' outlined in ISO 31000: 2009 and specifically explains the principles embodied in the new Clauses 17 18 and 19 of the Major Suite of the FIDIC forms of contract and how they should be used. An important chapter (Chapter 5) is included discussing the logical transition from decision-making to risk identification to responsibility for those allocated with particular risks to the potential liability that results. This includes discussing particular liabilities that may arise for parties typically involved in construction and engineering projects including developers owners contractors and designers. This part of the book links insurance to the law and explains the interaction between the two topics. The correlation between liability and the need for indemnity which can only be provided properly through insurance is highlighted. The book is essential reading for practitioners from both the engineering profession and the insurance industry in all types of projects. Engineers who are required to use one of the Major Forms of the FIDIC Suite of Contracts whether they are designers or contractors and those involved in the insurance sector whether brokers claim consultants or insurance company personnel will find this book to be an indispensable reference. Essentials Of American Politics Essentials of American Politics is an undergraduate text with a novel analytical and comparative focus. It takes as a central theme the increasing tension in American politics between a general philosophy of limited government and particular public demands for more and better government programs and services. While this has always been a feature of the American polity recent events have brought it into sharp focus. Both a Republican Congress and Democratic president extol the virtues of less government but continue to grapple with demands for improved education health care transportation and almost every other area of social and economic life. All praise the virtues of lower taxation and at the same time promise improvements in the quality of public services. A similar tension applies in the courts in state politics and indeed throughout the system. Recent successes such as a balanced budget have been achieved in part because the limited government philosophy has been on the ascendant and has won support from all shades of political opinion. But conflicts over the distributional questions of who gets what has hardly subsided. In few other democracies is this tension as well defined as in the United States and Essentials reminds readers of this fact through comparison with democratic processes in other countries and in particular with European countries. Essentials weaves this theme into a discussion of American national politics. Up to date and well organized chapters are devoted to beliefs and values the Constitution federalism Congress presidency the federal bureaucracy interest groups and the courts. Policy chapters include economic social and foreign affairs. In all chapters the analytical approach explains to students some of the main controversies in American political science. At all times Essentials seeks to impart basic information on American politics in an analytical but stimulating manner. Features:Concise format of 17 chapters that cover instit GBP 130.00 1
Philosophic Classics: Ancient Philosophy Volume I This seventh edition of Philosophic Classics Volume I: Ancient Philosophy includes essential writings of the most important Greek philosophers along with selections from some of their Roman followers. In updating this edition editor Forrest E. Baird has continued to follow the same criteria established by the late Walter Kaufmann when the Philosophic Classics series was first established: (1) to use complete works or where more appropriate complete sections of works (2) in clear translations (3) of texts central to the thinker’s philosophy or widely accepted as part of the canon. To make the works more accessible to students most footnotes treating textual matters (variant readings etc. ) have been omitted and important Greek words have been transliterated and put in angle brackets. In addition each thinker is introduced by a brief essay composed of three sections: (1) biographical (a glimpse of the life) (2) philosophical (a résumé of the philosopher’s thought) and (3) bibliographical (suggestions for further reading). New to this seventh edition: Changes in translations: New translations of Plato’s Apology and Phaedo and Aristotle’s Nichomachean Ethics and Politics from the acclaimed Focus Philosophical Library Series. New translations of Plato’s Euthyphro and Crito. New translations of Epicurus’s Letter to Herodotus Letter to Menoeceus and Principal Doctrines. New translation of the Parmenides fragments. Additional material: Gorgias’s model oration Encomium on Helen which gives a defense of Helen of Troy. A selection from Plato’s Gorgias on nature versus convention or law . Additional material from the opening of Plato’s Symposium to contextualize the dialogue. Additional material from Plato’s Republic (Book IX) on the tri-partite soul. Additional material from Aristotle’s Metaphysics (Book IV 1-4 7) on the nature of being and the so-called three rules of thought. A brief selection from Porphyry’s Life of Plotinus giving a sense of the person. Updated and reorganized bibliographies. To allow for all these changes a section of Book V from Plato’s Republic has been dropped. Those who use this first volume in a one-term course in ancient philosophy will find more material here than can easily fit a normal semester. But this embarrassment of riches gives teachers some choice and for those who offer the same course year after year an opportunity to change the menu. | Philosophic Classics: Ancient Philosophy Volume I GBP 115.00 1
