An unknown photo of his half-brother Emanuel initiates an investigation into the Manchester Freuds. An identity photo of his daughter Anna and the document to which it is attached throw light on the critical final days of her trip to England in 1914. Greek and Roman Painting and the Digital Humanities This volume is a groundbreaking discussion of the role of digital media in research on ancient painting and a deep reflection on the effectiveness of digital media in opening the field to new audiences. The study of classical art always oscillates between archaeology and classics between the study of ancient texts and archaeological material. For this reason it is often difficult to collect all the data to have access to both types of information on an equal basis. The increasing development of digital collections and databases dedicated to both archaeological material and ancient texts is a direct response to this problem. The book’s central theme is the role of the digital humanities especially digital collection s such as the Digital Milliet in the study of ancient Greek and Roman painting. Part 1 focuses on the transition between the original print version of the Recueil Milliet and its digital incarnation. Part 2 addresses the application of digital tools to the analysis of ancient art. Part 3 focuses on ancient wall painting. Rem Koolhaas as Scriptwriter explores the intersection of architecture film and text using the example of the working method of scriptwriter Rem Koolhaas and the Office for Metropolitan Architecture (OMA). It provides in-depth insights into the definition and historical evolution of the script - as a blueprint Hollywood script avant-garde script storyboard the relation to auteur theory and the difference between the script and scenario. City for Conquest F. Scott Fitzgerald's The Great Gatsby still captivates readers with its vision of 1920s New York as a city of infinite potential where ambition and defeat live hand in hand. This sentiment is captured with even greater acuity in the pages of Aben Kandel's nearly forgotten masterpiece of urban life City for Conquest (1936). The source of the classic 1940s James Cagney film of the same name this panoramic New York novel captures the complex patterns of city life vividly evoking a metropolis of dreams and nightmares. Kandel portrays a volatile city inhabited by the aristocrat the criminal the idealist the bohemian the driven the entrapped and the impoverished all equally striving to make a dent in this town. The city itself is booming its new constructions callously built on destruction supplanting with equal disdain the slums of Brooklyn and the farm fields of the Bronx. This feverish microcosm of humanity inhabits a world of immense inequality where six blocks from Wall Street people haven't got a dime six blocks from duplex apartments people live in hovels and between the scarlet sore and the apple of the eye there lay a thick eyebrow of indifference. A literary triumph in the tradition of Stephen Crane's Maggie: A Girl of the Streets and John Dos Passos' Manhattan Transfer and out of print for far too long City for Conquest is the inaugural work of fiction in Transaction's new Lost Urban Classics series. The Pension Fund Revolution In The Pension Fund Revolution originally published nearly two decades ago under the title The Unseen Revolution Drucker reports that institutional investors especially pension funds have become the controlling owners of America's large companies the country's only capitalists. He maintains that the shift began in 1952 with the establishment of the first modern pension fund by General Motors. By 1960 it had become so obvious that a group of young men decided to found a stock-exchange firm catering exclusively to these new investors. Ten years later this firm (Donaldson Lufkin & Jenrette) became the most successful and one of the biggest Wall Street firms. Drucker's argument that through pension funds ownership of the means of production had become socialized without becoming nationalized was unacceptable to the conventional wisdom of the country in the 1970s. Even less acceptable was the second theme of the book: the aging of America. Among the predictions made by Drucker in The Pension Fund Revolution are: that a major health care issue would be longevity; that pensions and social security would be central to American economy and society; that the retirement age would have to be extended; and that altogether American politics would increasingly be dominated by middle-class issues and the values of elderly people. While readers of the original edition found these conclusions hard to accept Drucker's work has proven to be prescient. In the new epilogue Drucker discusses how the increasing dominance of pension funds represents one of the most startling power shifts in economic history and he examines their present-day Impact. The Pension Fund Revolution is now considered a classic text regarding the effects of pension fund ownership on the governance of the American corporation and on the structure of the American economy altogether. The reissuing of this book is more timely now than ever. It provides a wealth of information for sociologists economists and political theorists. GBP 130.00 1

Reflections on the Revolution in Europe The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 effectively ended the division of Europe into East and West and the features of our world that have resulted bear little resemblance to those of the forty years that preceded the Wall's fall. The rise of a new Europe prompts many questions most of which remain to be answered. What does it all mean? Where is it going to lead? Are we witnessing the conclusion of an era without seeing anything to replace an old and admittedly dismal way of life? What will a market economy do to the social texture of various countries of Central Europe? Will it not make some rich while many will become poorer than ever? How can the rule of law be brought about? In this incisive and lucid book Ralf Dahrendorf one of Europe's most distinguished scholars ponders these and other equally vexing questions. He regards what has happened in East Central Europe as a victory for neither of the social systems that once opposed each other across the Iron Curtain. Rather he views these events as a vote for an open society over a closed society. The continuing conundrum he argues which will plague peoples everywhere will be how to balance the need for economic growth with the desire for social justice while building authentic and enduring democratic institutions. Reflections on the Revolution in Europe which includes a new introduction from the author is a humane skeptical and anti-utopian work a manifesto for a radical liberalism in which the social entitlements of citizenship are as important a condition of progress as the opportunities for choice. A fascinating study of change and geopolitics in the modern world Reflections points the way towards a new politics for the twenty-first century. Ralf Dahrendorf born in Hamburg Germany in 1929 is a member of Britain's House of Lords. He was professor of sociology at Hamburg Tobingen and Konstanz from 1957 to 1968 and in 1974 moved to Britain. He has been the director of the London School of Economics warden of St. Antony's College and pro vice-chancellor of the University of Oxford.
