Reform in Europe Breaking the Barriers in Government One of the most prevailing myths within the social sciences is the difficulty of achieving reform. Governments are either unwilling to push for reform or if they are willing they are unable to do so. This volume illustrates that reform can and does happen and therefore need not by mythologized. Through carefully selected case studies the contributions to this volume illustrate reform in several policy sectors and countries to include the smoking bans in Ireland public housing in the Netherlands and asylum procedures in Germany. Designed to enhance our understanding of the reform process this volume is highly suited to the fields of public administration and policy. | Reform in Europe Breaking the Barriers in Government GBP 11.99 1
Unity in Diversity: Achieving Structural Race Equity in Schools A third of all children in our schools are from racially minoritised backgrounds. Yet the data on attainment exclusion progression and representation indicates that our education system is structurally racist. Unity in Diversity explores the unconscious biases at play in our schools and demonstrates how educators can address this by improving representation in the curriculum staffroom and on the governing/trust board. Drawing on case studies from leaders this book demonstrates what schools are already doing to create an impactful anti-racist ethos and how these strategies may be applied in practice. Written by an experienced headteacher who has supported a diverse range of schools in improving their race equity each chapter addresses a different aspect of race inequality and provides practical strategies for overcoming it. This book empowers readers: To acknowledge that systemic race inequality exists in schools and that this necessitates an anti-racist approach To become comfortable talking about race and to create safe spaces for staff and students to engage in discussions about race To address unconscious biases and white fragility and to examine the inequality and underrepresentation of ethnic groups To audit all aspects of educational provision to determine what needs to change and to action and implement this change with lasting impact. Schools and teachers can play a major role in eliminating systemic racism in society. This book is an essential read for any teacher leader governor or trustee who is restless to address race inequity in our education system creating a more equal and represented school community. | Unity in Diversity: Achieving Structural Race Equity in Schools GBP 16.99 1

Music as Care: Artistry in the Hospital Environment CMS Emerging Fields in Music This book provides an overview of professional musicians working within the healthcare system and explores programs that bring music into the environment of the hospital. It outlines the specialized skills and training required to navigate safely and effectively within the healthcare context. The contributors draw on their experiences with collaborations between the performing arts and medicine at Boston University/Boston Medical Center University of Florida/UF Health Shands Hospital and the Peabody Institute/Johns Hopkins Medicine. Participatory Forest Policies and Politics in India Joint Forest Management Institutions in Jharkhand and West Bengal Originally published in 2004. In a radical breakaway from colonial and postcolonial policies that were based on centralized and revenue-orientated control of forests the government of India announced the Joint Forest Management (JFM) policy resolution in 1990. JFM promised important managerial concessions including share in cash profit from the timber harvest to forest citizens in exchange for management of state-owned forests. The government also asked the Forest Departments to invite village councils and NGOs to take part in the joint forest management schemes. Over a decade since its inception this volume examines the JFM highlighting how state bureaucracy local institutions and NGOs attempt to achieve the multiple goals of meeting subsistence needs rural equity sustainable forestry practices and forest cover conservation. Investigating four institutions - village-based forest protection groups the Forest Department village councils and NGOs - across the States of Jharkhand and West Bengal the book focuses on forest citizens and how they interact with other JFM institutions. In doing so it challenges notions of assumed virtues of moral economy and romanticized views of gender and indigenous knowledge and practices. The monograph also raises issues of social capital (local history politics and leadership) common property resource (CPR) management and incentives for participation. While pointing out various inconsistencies that exist in the participatory forest framework the book also shows the potential of JFM and suggests future directions forest management should take in India and elsewhere. | Participatory Forest Policies and Politics in India Joint Forest Management Institutions in Jharkhand and West Bengal GBP 11.99 1
The Failure of Political Reform in Venezuela This title was first published in 2001. The victory of former lieutenant colonel Hugo Chavez in the Venezuelan presidential elections of 1998 was criticized as a blow against the country's deep-seated democratic tradition. It is claimed that this simplistic argument fails to recognize the extent of democratic deterioration in the country and the limitations imposed by discredited political actors on a meaningful democratic reform process. The book aims to break new ground in providing unseen evidence of electoral fraud and offers a fresh perspective on the nature of democratic development. | The Failure of Political Reform in Venezuela GBP 14.99 1
Textual Patronage in English Drama 1570-1640 Through an investigation of the dedications and addresses from various printed plays of the English Renaissance the author recuperates the richness of these prefaces and connects them to the practice of patronage. The prefatory matter discussed ranges from the printer John Day's address to readers (the first of its kind) in the 1570 edition of Gorboduc to Richard Brome's dedication to William Seymour and address to readers in his 1640 play Antipodes. The study includes discussion of prefaces in plays by Shakespeare's contemporaries as well as Shakespeare himself among them Marston Jonson and Heywood. The author uses these prefaces to show that English playwrights printers and publishers looked in two directions toward aristocrats and toward a reading public in order to secure status for and dissemination of dramatic texts. The author points out that dedications and addresses to readers constitute obvious signs that printers publishers and playwrights in the period increasingly saw these dramatic texts as occupying a rightful place in the humanistic and commercial endeavor of book production. | Textual Patronage in English Drama 1570-1640 GBP 11.99 1
New Directions in Sport History Emerging from the ‘history from below’ movement sport history was marginalised for decades by those working within more traditional historical fields (and institutions). Although a degree of ignorance still exists sport history has now acquired a level of credibility through the dedicated work of professional historians. And yet as this authority has been established changes to UK higher education funding (the removal of direct state funding the Research Excellence Framework and tuition fees) and academic publishing (open access) have the potential to damage or even end sports research. This book examines sport history from a variety of perspectives. Do mainstream historians need to engage or ‘play’ with sports historians? Has the postmodernist ‘cultural turn’ in sports history been helpful to the sub-discipline? How can the teaching of sports studies be more innovative and inspiring? How can oral history and sport history be utilised in the study of other branches of historical interest. Although changes are required in dealing with the current political reality of UK higher education sport history still has a great deal to offer students future employers and the public alike. The Kalamari Union: Middle Class in East and West First published in 1998 this volume asks: are new social classes in the making in eastern Europe? Are class issues withering away? How do different classes organize their lives what kind of strategies do they adopt in East and West. Markku Kivinen brings Eastern Europe into the class debate. Recent sociological discussions have touched upon questions of class in Eastern Europe only very provisionally. On the other hand old analyses of social stratification under conditions of 'actually existed socialism' are no longer relevant in the current situation. This book analyses processes of class relations in Eastern Europe from new theoretical vantage-points using up-to-date empirical data. Under socialism power was said to be vested in the working class. However there was a constant tension between the 'holy proletariat' and the real life of the working class. Today all political forces in Eastern Europe; leftist and liberal alike are hankering for the middle class. This book explores the real processes in both East and West. This leads to more concrete political and even moral issues. The new 'sacred middle class' is challenged. The contributors adopt several conceptual approaches and perspectives which enter into a fruitful exchange in this book. | The Kalamari Union: Middle Class in East and West GBP 14.99 1

Disparate Regional Development in Brazil A Monetary Production Approach Published in 1997 an analysis of the regional development problem in Brazil from a monetary perspective. The author deals with the vicious circles generated in a country with strong regional disparities emphasizing the link between real and financial problems. Some elements of dependency theory and of post-Keynesian monetary theory are adopted to create a new model which can cope with both financial and real problems in the same framework. State policies for the regions are also examined and the study finds that they are inadequate in the prevention of the vicious circles which lead to disparate regional growth. | Disparate Regional Development in Brazil A Monetary Production Approach GBP 14.99 1

Power and Gender in European Rural Development Since the early 1990s new public and private actors emphasizing issues such as landscape nature environment and food safety have challenged EU rural development policies. This book looks at this innovative framework and in particular the impacts of the interactions between established interests and newcomers in local power relations. Specific attention has been given to the gendered nature of these processes. Case studies from throughout Western Europe analyze local rural power relations and present overviews of the significance of rural gender relations. The book demonstrates that traditional and new forms of social organization in rural areas create new forms of political participation. Changing forms of social capital and political participation not only influence the relation between state and civil society but also male-female relationships. The book argues that the dynamics of these gendered power relations produce competing discourses which can often hinder policy making and implementation. | Power and Gender in European Rural Development GBP 11.99 1
Parties and Political Change in South Asia Over the past seven decades and more political parties have become an essential feature of the political landscape of the South Asian subcontinent serving both as a conduit and product of the tumultuous change the region has experienced. Yet they have not been the focus of sustained scholarly attention. This collection focuses on different aspects of how major parties have been agents of - and subject to - change in three South Asian states (India Pakistan and Sri Lanka) examining some of the apparent paradoxes of politics in the subcontinent and covering issues such as gender religion patronage clientelism political recruitment and democratic regression. Recurring themes are the importance of personalities (and the corresponding neglect of institutionalisation) and the lack of pluralism in intraparty affairs factors that render parties and political systems vulnerable to degeneration. This book was published as a special issue of Commonwealth and Comparative Politics. | Parties and Political Change in South Asia GBP 9.99 1
Medium Secure Psychiatric Provision in the Private Sector First published in 1998 this volume assesses issues of privatisation and mental health provision in the Medium Secure Psychiatric Care sector including case studies on two regional secure units and Stockton Hall Psychiatric Hospital between 1989 and 1992. It emerged at the end of a period of Conservative Party dominance of almost two decades in which privatisation had been at the forefront of discussion and focused on the midpoint of that era. Despite this privatisation of psychiatric care had received little discussion. Here Katrina R. Moss discusses the role of private medical care in the UK healthcare landscape with focus on the meaning of privatisation attitudes towards privatising the criminal justice system along with relevant legal and medical issues related to regulation by the Mental Health Act 1983. | Medium Secure Psychiatric Provision in the Private Sector GBP 14.99 1
