The Glocalization of Shanghai Disneyland Focusing on Disney’s production of Shanghai Disneyland this book examines how the Chinese state and the local market influence Disney’s ownership and production of the identities and the representations of Shanghai Disneyland. Qualitative methods are here applied to combine both primary and secondary data including document analysis participant observation and in-depth interviews. Shanghai Disneyland is purposely created to be different from the other Disneylands under the “authentically Disney and distinctly Chinese” mandate. In order to survive and thrive in China Disney carefully constructs Shanghai Disneyland as Disneyland with Chinese characteristics. Previous studies tend to link Disney with cultural imperialism; however this book argues that it is not imperialism but glocalization that promotes a global company’s interests in China. In particular the findings suggest state-capital-led glocalization: glocalization led by economic capital of the state (direct investment) and economic capital with the state (market potential). Furthermore the four categories of glocalization with different conditions considerations and consequences illustrate various global–local dynamics in the process of a global formation of locality. The Glocalization of Shanghai Disneyland will appeal to students and scholars of sociology communication studies business studies and Asian studies more broadly. GBP 16.99 1

The Causes of the English Revolution 1529-1642 Dividing the nation and causing massive political change the English Civil War remains one of the most decisive and dramatic conflicts of English history. Lawrence Stone's account of the factors leading up to the deposition of Charles I in 1642 is widely regarded as a classic in the field. Brilliantly synthesising the historical political and sociological interpretations of the seventeeth century Stone explores theories of revolution and traces the social and economic change that led to this period of instability. The picture that emerges is one where historical interpretation is enriched but not determined by grand theories in the social sciences and as Stone elegantly argues one where the upheavals of the seventeenth century are central to the very story of modernity. This Routledge Classics edition includes a new foreword by Clare Jackson Trinity Hall Cambridge. | The Causes of the English Revolution 1529-1642 GBP 16.99 1
Overcoming Fragmentation in Southeast Europe Spatial Development Trends and Integration Potential With the expansion of the European Union the countries of Southeast Europe have finally been brought together within one socio-political entity. The restructuring of these economies following globalization and neoliberalization has meant that this region has become much more open to geopolitical shifts and trends. While the various countries have all entered into the slow process of European integration the historic fragmentation of this region has led to various conflicts and contradictions in the restructuring and transition of national economies. This volume provides a theoretical and comparative overview which examines the prospects for spatial cohesion in this region. With the need to handle persisting problems and conflicts from the past while coping with new economic and political structures Southeast Europe proves to be a challenging yet fruitful testing ground for how best to overcome fragmentation and establish a long-term process of social and economic integration. | Overcoming Fragmentation in Southeast Europe Spatial Development Trends and Integration Potential GBP 11.99 1
Protecting Creativity in Fashion Design US Laws EU Design Rights and Other Dimensions of Protection Exploring the debate over the benefits of legal protection for fashion design this book focuses on how a combination of minimal legal protections for design evolving social norms digital technology and market forces can promote innovation and creativity in a business known for its fast-paced remixing and borrowing. Focusing on the advantages and disadvantages of the main US and EU IP laws that protect fashion design in the world’s biggest fashion markets it describes how recent US case law in copyright and trademark cases has led to misaligned incentives for the industry and a lack of clear protection while in the EU the CJEU’s interpretation of the pan-European design rights system has created significant overlap with copyright law and risks leading to the overprotection of design. The book proposes that creativity and innovation in fashion derive some benefit from a limited unregistered design right protection and that cumulation with copyright protection is unhelpful. It also proposes that there is a larger role for developing social norms relating to sustainability the ethics of cultural appropriation and the online shaming of counterfeiters that can also help create a fair equilibrium between protection and borrowing in fashion design. | Protecting Creativity in Fashion Design US Laws EU Design Rights and Other Dimensions of Protection GBP 17.00 1
Neoliberalizing the University: Implications for American Democracy This collection brings together essays to address the crisis of Higher Education today focusing on its neoliberalization. Higher Education has been under assault for several decades as neoliberalism’s preference for market-based reforms sweeps across the US political economy. The recent push for neoliberalizing the academy comes at a time when it is ripe for change especially as it continues to confront growing financial pressure particularly in the public sector. The resulting cutbacks in public funding especially to state universities led to a variety of debilitating changes: increases in tuition growing student debt more students combining working and schooling declining graduation rates for minorities and low-income students increased reliance on adjuncts and temporary faculty and most recently growing interest in mass processing of students via online instruction. While many serious questions arise once we begin to examine what is happening in higher education today one particularly critical question concerns the implications of these changes on the relationship of education to as yet still unrealized democratic ideals. The 12 essays collected in this volume create important resources for students faculty citizens and policymakers who want to find ways to address contemporary threats to the higher education-democracy connection. This book was originally published as a special issue of New Political Science. | Neoliberalizing the University: Implications for American Democracy GBP 11.99 1
