Parrotia Persica (Persian Ironwood Tree) - Shrub
Parrotia Persica prefers a rich, fertile soil that does not dry out. It will not tolerate drought. During last year’s hot, dry summer I noticed several that had began to lose their leaves in response to stress. If you can, plant the tree in a sheltered spot away from cold, drying winds. This will also give some protection from frost, which can turn the early flowers to mush. Parrotias are reputed to prefer slightly acid soils, but in reality they will tolerate even chalky conditions. Two cultivars, Parrotia persica ‘Vanessa’ and P. persica ‘Jodrell Bank’ (raised at the arboretum next to the radio telescope), grow well in acid or alkaline soils. The only pruning needed is the cutting out of cross branches on mature trees and perhaps the removal of branches from the base to reveal the trunk. The plant itself has a very strong hardiness rating at H6 meaning it is perfect for the British climate. It does flower lovely red flowers in both spring and winter making it an unusual yet beautiful plant. It is generally pest and disease free.
