Fine Resolution Remote Sensing of Species in Terrestrial and Coastal Ecosystems

Fine Resolution Remote Sensing of Species in Terrestrial and Coastal Ecosystems

Detailed and accurate information on the spatial distribution of individual species over large spatial extents and over multiple time periods is critical for rapid response and effective management of environmental change. The twenty first century has witnessed a rapid development in both fine resolution sensors and statistical theories and techniques. These innovations hold great potential for improved accuracy of species mapping using remote sensing. Fine Resolution Remote Sensing of Species in Terrestrial and Coastal Ecosystems is a collection of eight cutting-edge studies of fine spatial resolution remote sensing including species mapping of biogenic and coral reefs seagrasses salt and freshwater marshes and grasslands. The studies illustrate the power of fine resolution imagery for species identification as well as the value of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) imagery as an ideal source of high-quality reference data at the species level. The studies also highlight the benefit of LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) data for species identification and how this varies depending on the species of interest as well as the nature of the context in which the species is found. The broad range of applications explored in the book demonstrates the major contribution of remote sensing to species-level terrestrial and coastal ecosystem studies as well as the potential for future advances. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of the International Journal of Remote Sensing.

Igniting Justice and Progressive Power The Partnership for Working Families Cities

Igniting Justice and Progressive Power The Partnership for Working Families Cities

A progressive resurgence is happening across the United States. This book shows how long-lasting coalitions have built progressive power from the regional level on up. Anchored by the think and act affiliate organizations of the Partnership for Working Families (PWF) these regional power building projects are putting in place the vision policy agenda political savvy and grassroots mobilization needed for progressive governance. Through six sections the book explores how Partnership for Working Families projects are a core part of the defeat of the right-wing in states such as California; the challenge to corporate neoliberalism in traditionally liberal areas; and contests for power in such formally solid red states as Arizona Georgia and Colorado. This book considers how these PWF groups work on economic racial and environmental justice challenges equitable development and other critical issues. It addresses how at their core they bring together labor community environmental and faith-based organizations and the coalitions and campaigns that they developed have won and continue to win substantial victories for their communities. Power in Coalition Strategies for strong unions and social change

Power in Coalition Strategies for strong unions and social change

How can we change things in an age in which governments are fixated on the bottom line and conventional protest rallies have lost their punch?Coalitions can be important tools for social change and union revitalisation. What makes them successful? What causes them to fail? Community organiser Amanda Tattersall examines successful coalitions between unions and community organisations in three countries: the public education coalition in Sydney Toronto's Ontario Health Coalition fighting to save universal health care and Chicago's living wage campaign run by the Grassroots Collaborative. She explores when and how coalitions can be a powerful strategy for social change organisational development and union renewal. Power in Coalition is essential reading for unionists community activists and anyone passionate about social change. 'A fascinating insight into the potential for coalitions to restore the balance of power between governments and the communities they are supposed to serve. ' - Julian Burnside AO QC'Amanda Tattersall shows that coalitions though hard work at times are the best means we have to rebalance power beat poverty and injustice and build a future that includes all of us especially the weakest. ' - Tim Costello AO CEO World Vision Australia'If unions are to maximise their influence in the 21st century they must build alliances with other organisations around economic social and ecological concerns affecting humanity. This book shows it is possible to build the necessary coalitions to achieve this end. Statistical Power Analysis A Simple and General Model for Traditional and Modern Hypothesis Tests Fifth Edition

Statistical Power Analysis A Simple and General Model for Traditional and Modern Hypothesis Tests Fifth Edition

Statistical Power Analysis explains the key concepts in statistical power analysis and illustrates their application in both tests of traditional null hypotheses (that treatments or interventions have no effect in the population) and in tests of the minimum-effect hypotheses (that the population effects of treatments or interventions are so small that they can be safely treated as unimportant). It provides readers with the tools to understand and perform power analyses for virtually all the statistical methods used in the social and behavioral sciences. Brett Myors and Kevin Murphy apply the latest approaches of power analysis to both null hypothesis and minimum-effect testing using the same basic unified model. This book starts with a review of the key concepts that underly statistical power. It goes on to show how to perform and interpret power analyses and the ways to use them to diagnose and plan research. We discuss the uses of power analysis in correlation and regression in the analysis of experimental data and in multilevel studies. This edition includes new material and new power software. The programs used for power analysis in this book have been re-written in R a language that is widely used and freely available. The authors include R codes for all programs and we have also provided a web-based app that allows users who are not comfortable with R to perform a wide range of analyses using any computer or device that provides access to the web. Statistical Power Analysis helps readers design studies diagnose existing studies and understand why hypothesis tests come out the way they do. The fifth edition includes updates to all chapters to accommodate the most current scholarship as well as recalculations of all examples. This book is intended for graduate students and faculty in the behavioral and social sciences; researchers in other fields will find the concepts and methods laid out here valuable and applicable to studies in many domains. | Statistical Power Analysis A Simple and General Model for Traditional and Modern Hypothesis Tests Fifth Edition

US–China Foreign Relations Power Transition and its Implications for Europe and Asia

This book examines the power transition between the US and China and the implications for Europe and Asia in a new era of uncertainty. The volume addresses the impact that the rise of China has on the United States Europe transatlantic relations and East Asia. China is seeking to use its enhanced power position to promote new ambitions; the United States is adjusting to a new superpower rivalry; and the power shift from the West to the East is resulting in a more peripheral role for Europe in world affairs. Featuring essays by prominent Chinese and international experts the book examines the US–China rivalry the changing international system grand strategies and geopolitics foreign policy geo-economics and institutions and military and technological developments. The chapters examine how strategic security and military considerations in this triangular relationship are gradually undermining trade and economics reversing the era of globalization and contributing to the breakdown of the US-led liberal order and institutions that will be difficult to rebuild. The volume also examines whether the adversarial antagonism in US–China relations the tension in transatlantic ties and the increasing rivalry in Europe–China relations are primarily resulting from leaders’ ambitions or structural power shifts. This book will be of much interest to students of Asian security US foreign policy European politics and International Relations in general. | US–China Foreign Relations Power Transition and its Implications for Europe and Asia
