Food Feasting and Table Manners in the Late Middle Ages Volume I: The Iberian Peninsula in the European Context This book offers a study of what and how people ate in the Iberian Peninsula between the twelfth and fifteenth centuries. It has long been recognized that Mediterranean cultures attach great importance to communal meals and food cooked with great refinement. However whilst medieval feasting in England France and Italy has been thoroughly studied Spain and Portugal have both been somewhat neglected in this area of study. This volume analyses how medieval men of the Iberian Peninsula questioned themselves about different aspects deemed important in social feasting. It investigates the acquisition of table manners and rhetorical skills the interaction between medicine and eating and the presence of food in literature and religion. The book also shows how this shared society and culture as well as their attitude towards food connected them to a Western European tradition. The book will appeal to scholars and students alike interested in food and feasting from the perspectives of literature history language art religion and medicine and to those interested in a social cultural and literary overview of life in the Iberian Peninsula during the late Middle Ages. | Food Feasting and Table Manners in the Late Middle Ages Volume I: The Iberian Peninsula in the European Context GBP 130.00 1
A Matter of Discourse Community and Communication in Contemporary Philosophies First published in 1998. The emphasis upon differences plurality and multiculturalism has led to an outpouring of information that has been interpreted by theories such as pragmatism communitarianism feminism postmodern discourse and liberation ethics. Up to now these issues have been seen as particular and external objects for theoretical discussion. This book goes to the heart of the matter and opens promising avenues for further philosophical reflection on these topics. Having the conception of communication in discourse theory as point of departure scholars of distinct philosophical backgrounds move in and out of different contexts to offer a first-hand and in-depth account of the above positions in their dialogue with discourse theory. By establishing a web they connect distinct issues that have been dealt with only separately thus far without losing sight of differences. In the end A Matter of Discourse shows that pluralism and multiculturalism are to be found within philosophy itself. | A Matter of Discourse Community and Communication in Contemporary Philosophies GBP 31.99 1

Italian Renaissance Art The chronology of the Italian Renaissance its character and context have long been a topic of discussion among scholars. Some date its beginnings to the fourteenthcentury work of Giotto others to the generation of Masaccio Brunelleschi and Donatello that fl ourished from around 1400. The close of the Renaissance has also proved elusive. Mannerism for example is variously considered to be an independent (but subsidiary) late aspect of Renaissance style or a distinct style in its own right. | Italian Renaissance Art GBP 130.00 1

Federal Solutions to Ethnic Problems Accommodating Diversity Exploring five distinct models of federal arrangement this book evaluates the relative merits of each model as a mechanism for managing relations in ethnically divided societies. Two broad approaches to this issue accommodation and denial are identified and from this five distinct models of federal arrangement are derived. The models; ethnic anti-ethnic territorial ethno-territorial and federacy are defined and then located within their broader theoretical tradition. Detailed case studies are used to evaluate the strengths and weakness of each model and highlight patterns in the success and failure rates of the universe of post-1945 federal arrangements. From this it is clear that two forms of ethnically defined federal arrangement – federacy and ethno-territorial federalism are associated with low failure rates while ethnic federalism has enjoyed a far higher rate of failure. The reasons for this are examined and the implications of this for the design of federal systems in ethnically divided societies are assessed. Federal Solutions to Ethnic Problems: Accommodating Diversity advances a new argument within the field of comparative politics that certain forms of federal arrangement are systematically more successful than others in ameliorating ethnically conflicted societies and is essential reading for students and scholars with an interest in politics and the Middle East. | Federal Solutions to Ethnic Problems Accommodating Diversity GBP 42.99 1
