Ligustrum Jonandrum (Lollipop Privet) – Standard Ball 150 cm

The Privet, also known as the Ligustrum, starts its tale from Asia, eventually extending into Australia and Europe. The actual plant is used as a street tree in Europe and has an interesting history in that it became very popular as a street ornament in Britain during WWII when the government started to requisition post-1850 iron gates and railings to be turned into ammunition for the war effort. The plant itself is semi-evergreen and is a very bushy shrub although this variant grows into a lovely lollipop shape hence its other name, ‘Lollipop Privet’. It produces abundant creamy white flowers with a rather unusual scent in late summer and small, black berries in autumn. It needs regular watering three times a week. The Hardiness rating is H6, meaning that it is perfect for the UK climate. Privet grows rapidly and needs clipping every two to three weeks in the summer months. Growth slows down and stops in September, after which the shrub will retain its shape until next spring .All parts of the plant are toxic and may cause severe discomfort if eaten. This tree has a broad, ovoid to round crown and a rounded top. The trunk is heavy and irregular, light grey and later grooved. The heavy lateral branches are usually found low on the trunk. A lot of root suckers usually grow from the lower trunk. After one year, twigs are hairy and reddish brown, and become bare in the winter. Commonly called the Holly Oak tree, Quercus Ilex often live for more than a thousand years. They are large evergreens with very dense crowns of leaves. They have strong polymorphic leaf of 2 - 9cm long; the younger leaves are wider and have toothed, sharp margins. The Citrus Limonum, popularly known as Lemon Trees, are one of the most known plants to mankind for their ability to produce the delightful lemon fruit. The history of the origins of lemons is unknown although it is believed they were first grown in Assam, a region of northeast India, northern Burma or even China. Lemons and their associated trees started to enter Europe during the time of Ancient Rome, but they were not widely cultivated. The lovely Photina, also known as the ‘Red Robin’, is now available in arch form for all those special occasions. The plant itself is native to North America and Asia although has been successfully grown in many gardens throughout the UK for about 20 years now. The actual name of the plant, “Photina”, is actually derived from the word “photeinos” which is Greek for “glossy”, a very true statement when it comes to this plant. This plant is perfect for the British climate and can successfully be grown throughout the country. With a high hardiness rating, it is perfect for planting in well-drained soil. Green throughout the year, the best part of the Photina is that when it gets to spring, the flowers start to turn into a beautiful red and white colour, providing a very romantic view. Minimal pruning is required but an occasional trim in Spring and Summer is advised. Jelly Palm leaves are not shaped in a circular fan like many other palms but instead take on a more oblong outline, forming arcs rising and falling from the trunk. Because of its interesting shape, the Butia Capitata has become popular as an ornamental, specimen plant; creating a relaxed sense of the tropical. The plant itself has been used for many years to produce fruits that have been used to produce cocoa. The plant is hardy at H5 and only needs sheltering in an extreme cold snap.
