Modern Optimization Methods for Decision Making Under Risk and Uncertainty The book comprises original articles on topical issues of risk theory rational decision making statistical decisions and control of stochastic systems. The articles are the outcome of a series international projects involving the leading scholars in the field of modern stochastic optimization and decision making. The structure of stochastic optimization solvers is described. The solvers in general implement stochastic quasi-gradient methods for optimization and identification of complex nonlinear models. These models constitute an important methodology for finding optimal decisions under risk and uncertainty. While a large part of current approaches towards optimization under uncertainty stems from linear programming (LP) and often results in large LPs of special structure stochastic quasi-gradient methods confront nonlinearities directly without need of linearization. This makes them an appropriate tool for solving complex nonlinear problems concurrent optimization and simulation models and equilibrium situations of different types for instance Nash or Stackelberg equilibrium situations. The solver finds the equilibrium solution when the optimization model describes the system with several actors. The solver is parallelizable performing several simulation threads in parallel. It is capable of solving stochastic optimization problems finding stochastic Nash equilibria and of composite stochastic bilevel problems where each level may require the solution of stochastic optimization problem or finding Nash equilibrium. Several complex examples with applications to water resources management energy markets pricing of services on social networks are provided. In the case of power system regulator makes decision on the final expansion plan considering the strategic behavior of regulated companies and coordinating the interests of different economic entities. Such a plan can be an equilibrium − a planned decision where a company cannot increase its expected gain unilaterally. | Modern Optimization Methods for Decision Making Under Risk and Uncertainty GBP 140.00 1
Cognitive Dependability Engineering Managing Risks in Cyber-Physical-Social Systems under Deep Uncertainty The work is a context-oriented analysis and synthesis of complex engineered systems to ensure continuous and safe operations under conditions of uncertainty. The book is divided in four parts the first one comprises an overview of the development of systems engineering: starting with basics of Systems Science and Single Systems Engineering through System of Systems Engineering to Cognitive Systems Engineering. The Cognitive Systems Engineering model was based on the concept of imperfect knowledge acquisition and management. The second part shows the evolutionary character of the dependability concept over the last fifty years. Beginning from simple models based on the classical probability theory through the concepts of tolerating faults as well as resilience engineering we come to the assumptions of Cognitive Dependability Engineering (CDE) based on the concept of continuous smart operation both under normal and abnormal conditions. The subject of the next part is analysis and synthesis of Cyber-Physical-Social (CPS) Systems. The methodology consists of the following steps: modeling CPS systems' structure simulating their behavior in changing conditions and in situations of disruptions and finally assessing the dependability of the entire system based on CDE. The last part of the work answers the question of how to deal with risks in CPS systems in situations of high level of uncertainty. The concept of a Cognitive Digital Twin was introduced to support the process of solving complex problems by experts and on this basis a framework for cognitive dependability based problemsolving in CPS Systems operating under deep uncertainty was developed. The possibilities and purposefulness of using this framework have been demonstrated with three practical examples of disasters that have happened in the past and have been thoroughly analyzed. | Cognitive Dependability Engineering Managing Risks in Cyber-Physical-Social Systems under Deep Uncertainty GBP 145.00 1

Advanced Design of Pile Foundations Under Lateral Loading This book presents models that capture the nonlinear response of piles subjected to lateral forces. Utilising a consistent approach encompassing new mathematical models it offers solutions presented as closed-form expressions and underpinned by the same set of 3-5 measurable soil-input parameters. These focus on nonlinear response of mono piles anchored piles pile groups and torsional piles as well as passive piles subjected to soil movement induced in shearing sliding slopes or excavation and earthquake shaking. The models can also be used for pipelines and similar beam structures. Solutions are provided in the form of design charts with each parameter obtained using available test data and illustrated with real-world cases. Integrated Water Resources Management Institutions and Livelihoods under Stress Bottom-up Perspectives from Zimbabwe; UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis The majority of people in Limpopo river basin depend on rainfed agriculture. Unfortunately the Limpopo is water scarce and parts of the basin such as Zimbabwe's Mzingwane catchment are under stress in terms of agro-ecological and socio-politicoeconomic conditions. Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) has been adopted in the river basin in an attempt to improve water resources management. However it is not known whether or how IWRM has improved practices in water resources management and contributed towards improved livelihoods. This study used a bottom-up approach to analyse water management practices and livelihoods in the river basin. The objective of the study was to understand practices in water resources management at the local level and what drives those practices. Specifically the study analysed: practices in access to water for domestic and productive uses efforts at sustaining livelihoods and the environment water management for agriculture contestations over urban water services and river basin planning. The study showed the importance of context as a driver of practices in water resources management. The demonstrated influence of local level drivers on water resources management and livelihoods suggest that the challenges in water resources management cannot be solved outside of the wider socio-politico-economic realm. | Integrated Water Resources Management Institutions and Livelihoods under Stress Bottom-up Perspectives from Zimbabwe; UNESCO-IHE PhD Thesis GBP 175.00 1

Modelling and Analysis of Fine Sediment Transport in Wave-Current Bottom Boundary Layer The evolution and utilization of estuarine and coastal regions are greatly restricted by sediment problems. This thesis aims to better understand fine sediment transport under combined action of waves and currents especially in the wave-current bottom boundary layer (BBL). Field observations experimental data analysis theoretical analysis and numerical models are employed. Silt-dominated sediments are sensitive to flow dynamics and the suspended sediment concentration (SSC) increase rapidly under strong flow dynamics. This research unveils several fundamental aspects of silty sediment i. e. the criterion of the incipient motion the SSC profiles and their phase-averaged parameterization in wave-dominated conditions. An expression for sediment incipient motion is proposed for silt-sand sediment under combined wave and current conditions. A process based intra-wave 1DV model for flow-sediment dynamics near the bed is developed in combined wave-current conditions. The high concentration layer (HCL) was simulated and sensitivity analysis was carried out by the 1DV model on factors that impact the SSC in the HCL. Finally based on the 1DV model the formulations of the mean SSC profile of silt-sand sediments in wave conditions were proposed. The developed approaches are expected to be applied in engineering practice and further simulation. | Modelling and Analysis of Fine Sediment Transport in Wave-Current Bottom Boundary Layer GBP 77.99 1

Decision Modes in Complex Task Environments Despite intense research on decision-making in action we still know little about when decision-makers rely on deliberate vs. intuitive decision-making in decision situations under complexity and uncertainty. Building on default-interventionist dual-processing theory this book studies decision-making modes (deliberate vs. intuitive) in complex task environments contingent on perceived complexity experience and decision style preference. We find that relatively inexperienced decision-makers respond to increases in subjective complexity with an increase in deliberation and tend to follow their decision style preference. Experienced decision-makers are less guided by their decision preference and respond to increases in subjective complexity only minimally. This book contributes to a developing stream of research linking decision-making with intra-personal and environmental properties and fosters our understanding of the conditions under which decision-makers rely on intuitive vs. deliberate decision modes. In doing so we go one step further towards a comprehensive theory of decision-making in action. | Decision Modes in Complex Task Environments GBP 69.99 1
