Youth Technical Sessions Proceedings VI Youth Forum of the World Petroleum Council - Future Leaders Forum (WPF 2019) June 23-28 2019 Sain Over a decade ago the World Petroleum Council launched an initiative to hold an international professional youth forum. The first forum took place in October 2004 in China and had as its motto: Young people and innovations are the future of the oil industry. It was the first major event in the history of the WPC in which young professionals and academics had the leading role and had the opportunity to exchange their ideas in insights on the oil and gas industry with industry leaders and main representatives of the oil and gas industry. Since then issues of professional development and the disclosure of the creative potential of young industry professionals have been on the agenda of the World Petroleum Council as one of the key areas for the development of international cooperation focused on a strategic perspective. Karst without Boundaries Karstified rocks of different lithology cover more than 10% of the continental surface of our planet. It is known that some 20% or even a few percent more of the global population largely depends on karstic groundwater but in many karst areas all over the world there are limited natural resources including absence of drinking waters. The problems of water shortage equitable water use or water protection from pollution become more problematic when they come to transboundary regions. The Dinaric region is a classical karst area where created borders of newly established countries after the civil war in 1990s resulted with an urgent need to create ambience for sustainable water management. The project DIKTAS is one of the first ever attempts to establish sustainable integrated management principles in a transboundary karst aquifer of the magnitude of the Dinaric Karst System. Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges Proceedings of the EAAE ARCC 10th International Conference (EAAE ARCC 2016) 15-18 Jun The escalating interdependecy of nations drives global geopolitics to shift ever more quickly. Societies seem unable to control any change that affects their cities whether positively or negatively. Challenges are global but solutions need to be implemented locally. How can architectural research contribute to the future of our changing society? How has it contributed in the past? The theme of the 10th EAAE/ARCC International Conference “Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges” was set to address these questions. This book Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges includes reviewed papers presented in June 2016 at the 10th EAAE/ARCC International Conference which was held at the facilities of the Faculty of Architecture of the University of Lisbon. The papers have been further divided into the following five sub-themes: a Changing Society; In Transit – Global Migration; Renaturalization of the City; Emerging Fields of Architectural Practice; and Research on Architectural Education. The EAAE/ARCC International Conference held under the aegis of the EAAE and of the ARCC is a conference organized every other year in collaboration with one of the member schools/ universities of those associations alternatively in North America or in Europe. | Architectural Research Addressing Societal Challenges Proceedings of the EAAE ARCC 10th International Conference (EAAE ARCC 2016) 15-18 Jun GBP 450.00 1
Cover Crops and Sustainable Agriculture This book will not serve as the encyclopedia of cover crop management but it’s close. The benefits of a wide range of individual cover crops and blends/mixes for specific agronomic crop rotations and geographic locations are included. Descriptions photographs and illustrations show how cover crops look in the field including plant height leaf architecture and rooting patterns. Long term benefits are described for soil health soil structure water quality nutrient contributions soil biodiversity air quality and climate change. In addition to the whys of cover crop use the book includes details on the hows: how to choose cover crops for specific applications and locations; how (and when) to plant; how to manage and maintain the cover for maximum benefit; and how and when to terminate. Planting options include: drilling/planting between rows of an agronomic crop at planting time or when the crop is short (i. e. corn in early June); aerial seeding with an airplane or high-clearance machine shortly before the crop reaches maturity; and drilling/planting immediately after harvest of the agronomic crop. Selected cover crops (blends) can help with pest and disease management. Cover crops are an economic input with an expected return on investment similar to pesticides and fertilizer. As part of a continuous no-till system cover crops provide long-term biological chemical and structural benefits. The resulting increase in soil organic matter means the agronomic crop yields benefit from better water infiltration and water holding capacity greater availability of nitrogen and other nutrients deeper rooting and increased soil microbial activity in the root zone. | Cover Crops and Sustainable Agriculture GBP 52.99 1
The Complex Lives of British Freshwater Fishes CHOICE 'Highly Recommended for all readers' June 2021 Vol. 58 No. 10 This stunningly illustrated book goes far beyond a run-of-the-mill nature guide. It explores the fascinating life histories of Britain’s freshwater fishes a group of animals which despite their importance and ubiquity in our diverse still and flowing fresh waters has before now been rarely regarded and respected as 'wildlife'. Our native fishes tend generally to be considered as simply something for anglers to catch or for people to eat yet they work enormously hard for us. Author Mark Everard avid nature-watcher angler and scientist shows how freshwater fish provide food ornamentation sport and cultural identity and highlights their huge importance for conservation as part of the living ecosystems upon which we all depend. He dives into the mysteries moving below the surface of our rivers and lakes bringing the wonderful and fascinating world of the diversity of British freshwater fish species into plain sight and into mind. This unique book features over 100 full-colour photographs by pioneering photographer and filmmaker Jack Perks whose work has featured on BBC Springwatch The One Show and Countryfile. The book is filled with technical detail useful to conservationists and biology students. Most importantly it is also presented in an accessible visually attractive and engaging manner that will appeal to anybody with an interest in the natural world: the conservation-minded public the angling community and our nation of wildlife enthusiasts. Whatever your background this book will open your eyes to our freshwater fishy wealth and the many ways in which it enriches our lives. | The Complex Lives of British Freshwater Fishes GBP 31.99 1

The Tower of Pisa History Construction and Geotechnical Stabilization The Leaning Tower of Pisa is known worldwide for its five-degree lean. The Tower is the Campanile of the Cathedral which together with the Baptistry and Cemetery form a breath-taking collection of monuments which are regarded as supreme examples of early Renaissance Romanesque architecture. In March 1990 the Tower was closed to the public as it was declared unsafe and close to collapse. A Commission was set up by the Italian Government with the task of developing and implementing stabilization measures. This book begins with a brief description of the history of the Tower and its construction. The reader is then introduced to the huge challenges faced by the Commission in designing and implementing appropriate stabilization measures whilst at the same time satisfying the demanding requirements of conserving a world heritage monument. In particular two historical studies are described which proved to be most valuable in arriving at suitable stabilization measures. The first was a deduction of the history of inclination of the tower during and subsequent to construction. The results of this study were used to calibrate a sophisticated numerical model of the tower and the underlying very soft ground which proved vital in evaluating the effectiveness of various stabilization schemes. The second study was of measurements of movement made since 1911. This latter study revealed an unexpected mechanism of foundation movement which proved crucial in developing the temporary and permanent stabilization measures and which resulted in the Tower being re-opened to the public in June 2001. The book will appeal to both professionals and students in the fields of Architecture and Civil Engineering. It will also interest specialised audiences of geotechnical engineers and conservation architects. It may also be of wider interest to anyone planning to visit Pisa or who is intrigued as to what caused the Tower to lean and how it was stabilized. | The Tower of Pisa History Construction and Geotechnical Stabilization GBP 54.99 1
