Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes Etiology and Prevention

Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes Etiology and Prevention

Over the past two decades type 2 diabetes has emerged as a leading threat to global health and the considerable overlap in obesity and diabetes trends are likely no coincidence. While the underpinnings for both etiologies are linked to lifestyles particularly dietary and physical activity patterns determining optimal approaches for preventing and managing type 2 diabetes using dietary composition remains a challenge. Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes: Etiology and Prevention rigorously examines various perspectives on diet and type 2 diabetes. The book presents a comprehensive description and evaluation of the central research to date primarily in humans on the macronutrients and their subclasses micronutrients foods beverages and overall dietary patterns with respect to the risk of type 2 diabetes. It addresses the mediating/mechanistic role of obesity and body composition throughout the text where appropriate. The chapter authors all leading researchers in the field discuss fundamental nutritional principles applied to the pathophysiology of type 2 diabetes as well as applied behavioral studies on nutrition and diabetes for each subject area. The depth and breadth of this book includes aspects of the food synergy model for understanding the complicated pathways between nutrition dietary habits and risk for type 2 diabetes. It also examines the effects of artificially sweetened beverages and coffee. This reference provides a review of the science on the potential impact of many components of dietary behavior and nutritional properties on etiology and risk for this disease knowledge that is essential for formulating informed approaches to public health progress in this area. | Nutrition and Type 2 Diabetes Etiology and Prevention

Design of Prestressed Concrete to Eurocode 2

Design of Prestressed Concrete to Eurocode 2

The design of structures in general and prestressed concrete structures in particular requires considerably more information than is contained in building codes. A sound understanding of structural behaviour at all stages of loading is essential. This textbook presents a detailed description and explanation of the behaviour of prestressed concrete members and structures both at service loads and at ultimate loads and in doing so provide a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to structural design. Much of the text is based on first principles and relies only on the principles of mechanics and the properties of concrete and steel with numerous worked examples. However where the design requirements are code specific this book refers to the provisions of Eurocode 2: Design of Concrete Structures and where possible the notation is the same as in Eurocode 2. A parallel volume is written to the Australian Standard for Concrete Structures AS3600-2009. The text runs from an introduction to the fundamentals to in-depth treatments of more advanced topics in modern prestressed concrete structures. It suits senior undergraduate and graduate students and also practising engineers who want comprehensive introduction to the design of prestressed concrete structures. It retains the clear and concise explanations and the easy-to-read style of the first edition but the content has been extensively re-organised and considerably expanded and updated. New chapters cover design procedures actions and loads; prestressing systems and construction requirements; connections and detailing; and design concepts for prestressed concrete bridges. The topic of serviceability is developed extensively throughout. All the authors have been researching and teaching the behaviour and design of prestressed concrete structures for over thirty-five years and the proposed new edition of the book reflects this wealth of experience. The work has also gained much from Professor Gilbert active and long-time involvement in the development of standards for concrete buildings and concrete bridges. | Design of Prestressed Concrete to Eurocode 2

Parallel Computers 2 Architecture Programming and Algorithms

Parallel Computers 2 Architecture Programming and Algorithms

Since the publication of the first edition parallel computing technology has gained considerable momentum. A large proportion of this has come from the improvement in VLSI techniques offering one to two orders of magnitude more devices than previously possible. A second contributing factor in the fast development of the subject is commercialization. The supercomputer is no longer restricted to a few well-established research institutions and large companies. A new computer breed combining the architectural advantages of the supercomputer with the advance of VLSI technology is now available at very attractive prices. A pioneering device in this development is the transputer a VLSI processor specifically designed to operate in large concurrent systems. Parallel Computers 2: Architecture Programming and Algorithms reflects the shift in emphasis of parallel computing and tracks the development of supercomputers in the years since the first edition was published. It looks at large-scale parallelism as found in transputer ensembles. This extensively rewritten second edition includes major new sections on the transputer and the OCCAM language. The book contains specific information on the various types of machines available details of computer architecture and technologies and descriptions of programming languages and algorithms. Aimed at an advanced undergraduate and postgraduate level this handbook is also useful for research workers machine designers and programmers concerned with parallel computers. In addition it will serve as a guide for potential parallel computer users especially in disciplines where large amounts of computer time are regularly used. | Parallel Computers 2 Architecture Programming and Algorithms

Flavonoids and Anti-Aging The Role of Transcription Factor Nuclear Erythroid 2-Related Factor2

Flavonoids and Anti-Aging The Role of Transcription Factor Nuclear Erythroid 2-Related Factor2

The nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) was described as a master regulator of the cellular antioxidant response. Moreover many critical biological functions linked to cell viability metabolism autophagy inflammation immunity and differentiation have been attributed to Nrf2 which regulates over 600 genes. It is well known that oxidative stress which Nrf2 can ameliorate plays a key role in many pathologic processes such as aging obesity diabetes cancer and neurodegenerative diseases. Flavonoids on the other hand through their ability to activate and upregulate Nrf2 can have anti-oxidative anti-inflammatory anti-mutagenic and anti-carcinogenic properties. Flavonoids are an essential ingredient in nutraceuticals functional foods and pharmaceuticals. The present book Flavonoids and Anti-Aging: The Role of Transcription Factor Nuclear Erythroid 2-Related Factor2 focuses on the interaction between Nrf2 and flavonoids and their applications in various conditions such as aging osteoporosis cardiovascular diseases and neurodegenerative disease and many other areas. Key Features: Focuses on the mechanisms and use of flavonoids in activating Nrf2 as an anti-aging and WELLNESS molecule Provides a specific approach to flavonoid activation of Nrf2 and its implications in aging and various disease conditions and its applications as nutraceuticals Presents flavonoid-based functional foods Discusses the flavonoid nutraceuticals market and future trends Written by experts in the field this book provides a unique approach to understanding the flavonoid activation of the transcription factor Nrf2 which is responsible for many different disease conditions due to increased reactive oxidative species in the body caused by some physiological triggers. | Flavonoids and Anti-Aging The Role of Transcription Factor Nuclear Erythroid 2-Related Factor2

Building Stones of Milan and Lombardy Volume 2: Stones of Lombardy

Building Stones of Milan and Lombardy Volume 2: Stones of Lombardy

Milan and Lombardy have played an important role in the Italian country since the Roman period. This importance is reflected also by the diffusion of stone architecture: a persisting trait of Milan architecture was the use of different stones in the same building. Milan lies in the middle of the alluvial plain of the Po far from the stone quarries; some waterways were dug out in order to supply the building stones from the surrounding territories. The study of stone as building material was significant at the end of 19th century but then it was largely neglected by both architects and geologists. So it is significant to suggest a study about the stones employed to build in Milan (Volume 1) in relationship with a petrographic study about the features of the stones quarried in the whole Lombard territory (Volume 2). Volume 2 contains the description of the features of the stones reported in Volume 1. These features include metamorphic and magmatic rocks of the Alpine area; sedimentary rocks and loose materials of the Prealpine area; sedimentary rocks of the Apennine area; and loose sediments of the Padania plain. Some stones coming from other northern Italian regions and used in Lombard architecture are also described. Each stone is described in a card containing commercial and historical names petrographic classification macroscopic features mineralogical composition microscopic features geological setting quarry sites transport to yards morphology of dressed elements and surface handworking use in architecture in the whole Lombard territory and abroad and decay morphologies. A particular investigation is addressed to the stones used during the 20th century; a great part of them were never used before in Milan and in Lombardy. | Building Stones of Milan and Lombardy Volume 2: Stones of Lombardy
