Island Power Systems

Island Power Systems

A major concern of island power systems is frequency stability. A power system is said to be frequency stable if its generators are able to supply their loads at a frequency within acceptable limits after a disturbance. Frequency instability occurs if load-generation imbalances are not corrected in appropriate manner and time. Since island power systems are more sensitive to frequency instability than large ones due to the smaller number of generators online and the lower inertia they require a larger amount of primary reserve per generator. This book provides a worldwide overview of island power systems describing their main features and issues. Split into two parts the first part examines the technical operation and in particular frequency stability of island power systems and its technical solutions including more efficient underfrequency load-shedding schemes. The chapters explore both conventional and advanced load-shedding schemes and consider the improvement of these schemes by making them more robust and efficient. Advanced devices are modelled and analyzed to enhance frequency stability and reduce the need for load shedding. In the second part the economic operation of island power systems is explored in detail. For that purpose regulations and economic operations (centralized vs. market scheme) are reviewed by the authors. The authors discuss models for renewable energy sources and for advanced devices and systems such as demand-side management energy storage systems and electric vehicles. This book will be critical reading to all researchers and professionals in power system planning and engineering electrical/power delivery RES and control engineering. It will also be of interest to researchers in signal processing and telecommunications and renewable energy as well as power system utility providers.

The Building Blocks of Life A Nutrition Foundation for Healthcare Professionals

The Building Blocks of Life A Nutrition Foundation for Healthcare Professionals

Within the United Kingdom (UK) most mainstream healthcare practitioners receive little or no nutrition education during their years of training. As a consequence the understanding of nutrition amongst primary care practitioners such as general practitioners pharmacists midwives and practice nurses is limited and is largely focused on energy consumption and obesity. There is little knowledge of the wealth of micronutrients that underpin health nor of the ticking timebomb of insufficient intakes of those micronutrients amongst a significant proportion of the population in the UK. The Building Blocks of Life: A Nutrition Foundation for Healthcare Professionals is a step towards redressing that balance. It sets out an informative and engaging narrative on how and why nutrition is the basis for good health. It discusses UK-specific issues with regards to diet and intakes of vitamins minerals essential fatty acids and other micronutrients. It also raises concerns about the potential negative health implications of the generally poor UK diet and suggests ways that healthcare practitioners can support patients in improving their long-term health outlook. Nutrition policy in the UK needs to be dragged into the 21st century and this book sets out evidence-based arguments which challenge current public health myths such as the idea that 10 micrograms of vitamin D is all anyone needs or the messaging around the consumption of saturated fat vs highly processed seed oils or that everyone can get all the nutrients they need from a varied and balanced diet. Although The Building Blocks of Life: A Nutrition Foundation for Healthcare Professionals focuses on concerns around poor diet and the consequent micronutrient inadequacies in the UK the nutritional detail is relevant no matter where you are in the world. Everyone eats all the time. It is time that mainstream medicine looked towards food as both a cause and a solution to many of the chronic degenerative conditions that plague modern life. | The Building Blocks of Life A Nutrition Foundation for Healthcare Professionals

Biomechanics of Human Motion Applications in the Martial Arts Second Edition

Biomechanics of Human Motion Applications in the Martial Arts Second Edition

Biomechanics of Human Motion: Applications in the Martial Arts Second Edition explores the biomechanical principles of nine different forms of martial arts with specific attention paid to their anatomical features. Within this examination Professor Arus highlights the use of energy and force especially in Kyusho-Jutsu. Whereas the first edition provided an in-depth explanation of the Aikido techniques of Kokyu-ryoku the second edition focusses specifically on the grabbing and liberation techniques used in Kyusho-Jutsu. Such an examination stresses the importance of vital points finger manipulation and their co rresponding emphasis on energy usage. As Professor Arus details throughout Biomechanics of Human Motion Second Edition knowledge of this form of pressure point maneuvering is useful in both attack and counterattack situations especially since the martial artist’s anatomo-physiological adaptation to effort represents the most significant development in fighting regimens. The second edition also includes a discussion of the katana. Professor Arus notes that defense against the katana is nearly impossible describing the three major steps used in Japanese (Ma). It is customary in Aikido to defend against a wooden sword. By using a wooden sword an Aikido Master’s demonstration is pre-determined. Techniques to defend against these demonstrations are discussed throughout the book. Finally various attack and defense techniques using pressure points are also explained in Biomechanics of Human Motion Second Edition. | Biomechanics of Human Motion Applications in the Martial Arts Second Edition

Quaternary Vegetation Dynamics The African Pollen Database

Quaternary Vegetation Dynamics The African Pollen Database

This book celebrates the relaunch of the African Pollen Database presents state-of-the-art of modern and ancient pollen data from sub-Saharan Africa and promotes Open Access science. Pollen grains are powerful tools for the study of past vegetation dynamics because they preserve well within sedimentary deposits and have a huge diversity in ornamentation that allows different taxa to be determined. The reconstruction of past vegetation from the examination of ancient pollen records thus can be used to characterize the nature of past landscapes (e. g. abundance of forests vs. grasslands) provide insights into changes in biodiversity and gain empirical evidence of vegetation response to climatic change and human activity. In this the 35th Volume of Palaeoecology of Africa we bring together new data and extensive synthetic reviews to provide novel insights into the relationships between human evolution human activity climate change and vegetation dynamics during the Quaternary the last 2. 6 million years. Current and ongoing climate and land-use change is exerting pressure on modern vegetation formations and threatening the livelihoods and wellbeing of many peoples in Africa. In this book the focus is on the Quaternary because it is during this geological period that the modern vegetation formations developed into their current configurations against a backdrop of high magnitude global climate change (glacial-interglacial cycles) human evolution and a growing human land-use footprint. In this book the latest information is presented and collated from around the African continent to parameterize past vegetation states identify the drivers of vegetation change and assess the vegetation resilience to change. To achieve this research from two broad themes are covered: (i) the present is the key to the past (i. e. studies which improve our understanding of modern environments so that we can better interpret evidence from the past) and (ii) the past is the key to the future (i. e. studies which unlock information on how and why vegetation changed in the past so one can better anticipate trajectories of future change). This Open Access book will provide a strong foundation for future research exploring past ecological environmental and climatic change within Africa and the surrounding islands. The book is organized regionally (covering western eastern central and southern Africa) and it contains specialized articles focused on particular topics (such as modern pollen-vegetation relationships and fire as a driver of vegetation change) as well as regional and pan-African syntheses drawing together decades of research to assess key scientific questions (including the role of climate in driving vegetation change and the role of vegetation change in human evolution). These articles will be useful to students and teachers from high school to the highest level of university who are interested in the origins and dynamics of vegetation in Africa. Furthermore it is also meant to provide societally relevant information that can act as an inspiration for the development of sustainable management practices for the future. | Quaternary Vegetation Dynamics The African Pollen Database

Handbook of Obstetric Medicine

Handbook of Obstetric Medicine

Medical professionals are often involved in the management of the pregnant patient without necessarily being experts on all the complications surrounding pregnancy. The Handbook of Obstetric Medicine addresses the most common and serious medical conditions encountered in pregnancy including heart disease thromboembolism diabetes skin problems gastrointestinal disease neurological problems hormonal diseases hypertension and pre-eclampsia and more. For each condition the handbook includes a description of incidence clinical features pathogenesis diagnosis the effect of pregnancy and management of the condition. The book also includes a detailed section focusing on the differential diagnosis of common symptoms including hypertension chest pain palpitations breathlessness headaches dizziness abdominal pain and more. The symptoms and differential diagnoses are presented in an easy-to-read tabular format and include a description of important clinical features and potential areas of investigation. For those clinicians understandably reluctant to prescribe drugs during pregnancy a useful appendix includes a section on prescribing in pregnancy and a list of contra-indicated drugs. In addition to assist in the interpretation of laboratory tests a second appendix lists normal laboratory values in pregnancy broken down by trimester. Pre –pregnancy counselling and postnatal follow up are vital in the holistic management of women with medical problems and this includes appropriate contraceptive advice. A third appendix has therefore been added as a ready reference for clinicians not familiar with effective contraception. The new edition remains a pragmatic and easy-to-use design by including tables bullets and Points to remember boxes for ease of reference. Red Sea Geothermal Provinces

Red Sea Geothermal Provinces

“Today over two billion people in developing countries live without any electricity. They lead lives of misery walking miles every day for water and firewood just to survive. What if there was an existing viable technology that when developed to its highest potential could increase everyone’s standard of living cut fossil fuel demand and the resultant pollution” said Peter Meisen President Global Energy Network Institute in 1997. Even though energy is available technology was not matured enough to tap this energy in the nineties. Now with the advancement of drilling technology extracting heat from hot rocks has become a reality. Very soon when CO2 replaces the circulation fluid to extract heat from granites then both fossil fuel based and renewable energy sources will coexists balancing the CO2 emissions and providing energy food and water security to the rich and the poor countries. Red Sea rift represents the youngest spreading ridges in the world with a vast amount of heat energy stored on either side. The Red Sea is surrounded by countries with a weak economy. Developing a geothermal energy based economy in countries like Eritrea Djibouti and Ethiopia will provide food and water security to these countries while for other countries geothermal energy will help in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Although geothermal energy sources are available in all the countries since the opening of the Red Sea millions of years ago this was not brought to the light. Oil importing countries became highly dependent on the oil rich countries to sustain their economy and growth and thus remained poor. This book unfolds the huge energy source hydrothermal and EGS for the benefit of the poor countries to reduce poverty and lift the socio economic status of these countries. The book deals with i) future energy demand ii) CO2 emissions associated with fossil fuel based power plants iii) black carbon emissions associated biomass energy source and iv) strategies to reduce CO2 emissions by using geothermal energy as energy source mix in all the countries—oil exporting and oil importing countries— around the Red Sea. The amount of energy available from hot granites in all the countries is well documented. EGS being the future energy source for mankind this book will form the basis for future research by young scientists and academicians. Availability of fresh water is a matter of concern for all countries. The only way to satisfy the thirst of a growing population to meet drinking water demand and food security is to depend on seawater. A large volume of CO2 is being emitted from desalination plants supported by fossil fuel based energy sources. This book describes the advantages of using geothermal energy sources for the desalination process to meet the growing water and food demand of the countries around the Red Sea. Oil rich countries using its geothermal resources can now reduce food imports and become self sufficient in food production. This book gives hope for millions of children living in the underdeveloped countries around the Red Sea to satisfy their hunger and live a decent life with a continuous source of electricity water and food available. This book ends with a note on the economic benefits of geothermal energy vs other renewables. With the signing of the GGA (Global Geothermal Alliance) by several countries during the December 2015 CoP 21 summit in Paris policy makers and administrators will work together in implementing the necessary infrastructure and support to develop this clean energy source. | Red Sea Geothermal Provinces
