The House of Botanicals ABZ Dry Gin 70cl

The House of Botanicals ABZ Dry Gin 70cl

The House of Botanicals ABZ Dry Gin The House of Botanicals was founded in 2009 in the centre of Aberdeen in North East Scotland. It's a certified B Corp™ and is owned and operated by a small husband and wife team of Adam & Steffie Elan-Elmegirab. They use a combination of traditional and modern production techniques, as well as British grain spirit as the alcoholic base of their drinks. They then source botanicals from across the globe, and produce entirely with natural ingredients - refraining from using artificial flavours, preservatives or colours. Fun Fact: The coat of Arms on the bottles is a homage to both the Aberdeen and London City Coats of Arms. The Black panther adds a reference to the hip-hop music listened to by the team on most days - as well as the original Old Tom branding which would commonly feature a Black Cat. Whilst perhaps best known for their delicious Old Tom gins, they have now released their first non Old Tom, with their ABZ (the Aberdeen Airport Code) Dry Gin. This is made using a two stage process. Initially they use a traditional copper pot distillation of juniper berries, angelica root, orris root, coriander seed, cassia bark, almond, orange peel and lemon peel. After this, a second stage maceration is used with saffron threads, fennel seeds and just a hint of strawberry. The second preocess used preserves the more delicate flavours in these botanicals, which would be lost using traditional distillation. The result is a gin which has a light peach colour to it, with an aroma of piney juniper,  butterscotch, lemon and an underlying note of cracked black pepper. On the palate this has a rich, creamy mouthfeel - with the juniper and pine giving a strong back note to the gin. Bright citrus, warm sweet anise, and creamy strawberry lead into a finish of cracked black pepper which enlivens the taste buds. More from The House of Botanicals Perfect Serve This works perfectly as a long drink, mixed with either a dry tonic (such as Three Cents Dry Tonic), or Fever-Tree's Sicillian Lemonade. With either option take a large glass filled with ice and add 50ml of the gin. Gently pour over 150 - 200ml of your chosen tonic and stir gently. Garnish with a thin slice of strawberry. It also works exceptionally well in the mix, in cocktails such as the Dry Martini, Gimlet, Southside or Gin Fizz.

G'Vine Nouaison Gin 70cl

Jim Beam Double Oak Bourbon Whiskey 70cl

Jim Beam Double Oak Bourbon Whiskey 70cl

Jim Beam Double Oak Bourbon Whiskey First created in 1795, seven generations of the Beam family have now been crafting their Bourbon. Keeping their family values within which they were founded, they age their Bourbon twice as long as the law requires, imparting a special flavour. It's this dedication to quality that has made Jim Beam the world's number 1 Bourbon. For their Double Oak edition Jim Beam add a second stage to their aging. After the traditional 4-year aging process they tranfer the bourbon to freshly charred American White Oak barrels. This is then aged to taste. It is this second barreling which ensures an even deeper level of intense, spiced oakiness in the bourbon. The aroma of this Bourbon is rich, with notes of caramel and vanilla. This is rounded out by smoky toasted wood. The flavour is packed with intense caramel and toffee, along with a distinctive spiced oakiness (as you might expect from the name).  More from Jim Beam Perfect Serve We love this served simply with a single large cube of ice. However, in the words of their Master Distiller, drink it "Any Damn Way You Please". For a delicious Double Oak Old Fashioned Cocktail, take a mixing glass and fill with ice. Add 50ml of the Double Oak Bourbon, 4 dashes of bitters and 2 sugar cubes. Stir until the sugar cubes have melted, and strain into an old fashioned glass with a large ice cube in it. Squeeze the zest of an orange and lemon over the glass, and use as garnish.

Unicum Riserva 70cl

Unicum Riserva 70cl

Unicum Riserva One of the oldest herbal liqueurs to be found in Europe, the original Unicum Zwack recipe comprises over 40 different herbs. Most of these are sourced from within the Carpathian basin, but some are also imported from all over the world (Morocco, China, India, Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Nigeria, the Americas and even Australia). Its history dates back over 230 years to 1790, and the recipe has remained the same over this time, and is a closely guarded secret of the six generations of the Zwack family who have been producing it in Hungary.  Interesting fact: The name Unicum is said to originate from the words of the Holy Roman Emperor Joseph II who was given the drink in 1790. He apparently said "Das ist ein Unikum!" (This is unique). For their Riserva edition, the original Zwack Unicum is double aged. The first ageing is done in 80 year old traditional casks. This adds additional depth and character to the liqueur. The second ageing is done in barrels which previously aged Tokaji Aszu wines. (This wine is a honey sweet, dessert wine, which comes from North East Hungary). This second ageing mellows the liqueur, and adds delicious notes of winter spices and fruit aromas. The process doesn't finish there though. To finish this exquisite drink, the final stage includes blending the liqueur with Dobogo Winery’s Tokaji Aszu. This creates an enticing harmony between the herbal liqueur and the sweet honey flavours of the Tokaji. More from Unicum Perfect Serve This drink works perfectly as an aperitif, to whet your appetite before a meal. However we found its sweetness lent it more towards an after dinner digestif. However you enjoy it, this is a delicious taste of Hungary.

Normindia Gin 70cl

Normindia Gin 70cl

Normindia Gin The story of Domaine du Coquerel (House Coquerel) who make the range of Normindia Gins begins in 1937, when René Gilbert founded the company. They are based in Manoir du Coquerel which is situated in Normandy. Originally they started with the production of Calvados (which they still make) and are within the area where AOC Calvados can be made. Launched in 2015, Normindia Gin was created by Pierre, the third generation of the Domaine du Coquerel family. It is made entirely at the Coquerel distillery. Here they macerate the botanicals, distil in a traditional calvados copper column still, and bottle. They don't outsource any stage. For their gin, they utilise fifteen different botanical ingredients. Being produced in a distillery more reknowned for calvados, it should come as no surprise that apples are one of these. As well as this they use oranges, cinnamon, coriander, juniper, cloves, ginger, lily as well as seven others - which are kept a distillery secret. Fun Fact: The name Normindia comes from Normandy and India. This is a homage to the botanical ingredients from both regions which are used making the gin. The resulting gin has a delicious fresh and floral aroma. The floral notes continue into the flavour, where they are joined by warming spices in the background. Sweet, enticing orchard fruit flavours come through in the foreground as well as gentle piney juniper. More from Coquerel Calvados Perfect Serve This works exceptionnaly well with a classic neutral tonic (such as Three Cents Tonic). However, for something a little different try their Aegean Tonic Water. Take a large glass filled with ice and add 50ml of gin. Gently pour over 150 - 200ml of your chosen tonic and stir gently. Garnish with a couple of thin slices of apple.

The Macallan 12 Year Double Cask Whisky 70cl

The Macallan 12 Year Double Cask Whisky 70cl

The Macallan 12 Year Double Cask Whisky Founded in 1824 (making it nearly 200 years old) The Macallan distillery is located in Craigellachie, Moray in Scotland. The Macallen is classed as the second or third best-selling single malt scotch (behind Glenfiddich, and perhaps Glenlivet). Initially The Macallan was only matured in oak sherry casks, which the distillery brought from Jerez de la Frontera in Spain. However in 2004 they introduced the Fine Oak series (now known as the Triple Cask Matured range), which started mellowing whisky in bourbon oak casks as well as the classic sherry casks. The Double Cask whiskies encompass part of their core range, and this 12 Year whisky falls into this category. The Macallan team ensure a mix of European and American sherry seasoned oak casks - which allow the indulgent, yet delicate flavours of the American oak to take centre stage. The more traditional Macallan character is however still present (rich fruit, sherry and spiced wood), but in a familiar backdrop.  This is a single malt with a delightful autumnal sunset colour to it. Exceptionally well balanced, fully rounded with flavours of honey, citrus and ginger. The nose has oak, creamy butterscotch and vanilla - as well as fruit from toffee apples and candied oranges. On the palate honey, citrus and wood spices and the ginger comes through, which are perfectly balanced against raisins and caramel. The finish leaves oak lingering on the palate along with a sweet warmth. More from The Macallan Perfect Serve As with all whiskies, this is best drunk how you personally enjoy it. However the distillery recommends trying with a single large piece of ice. The large cube of ice melts slowly, diluting the drink less - ensuring you are able to enjoy a chilled drinking experience whilst tasting every drop of flavour.

Normindia Organic Gin 70cl

Normindia Organic Gin 70cl

Normindia Organic Gin The story of Domaine du Coquerel (House Coquerel) who make the range of Normindia Gins begins in 1937, when René Gilbert founded the company. Fun Fact: The name Normindia comes from Normandy and India. This is a homage to the botanical ingredients from both regions which are used making the gin. To create their Organic Gin, Normindia have created a distinct and totally new recipe - whilst remaining inspired by the original.  This recipe has 8 entirely organic ingredients. - Juniper berries, orange, lemon, coriander, cloves, ginger, cinnamon and apples. The initial alcohol base is also certified organic.  The resulting gin has a slight sweetness, and is fresh and fruity. The citrus aromas remain prominent, whilst the spice botanicals ate more subtle. More from Coquerel Calvados Perfect Serve We found this exceptionally easy to drink as a sipping gin. A shot over a large ice cube is delicious. However it also works as a longer drink with tonic. Take a large glass filled with ice and add 50ml of gin. Gently pour over 150ml of your chosen tonic (we liked Three Cents Tonic Water with this one) and stir gently. Garnish with a slice of orange.

Masthouse Column Malt Whisky 50cl

Masthouse Column Malt Whisky 50cl

Masthouse Column Malt Whisky Created by the Copper Rivet Distillery, in Kent - the location of the distillery has a rich tradition of innovation and craftsmanship. This area once produced world-class ships. The story starts in 2005 when the Russell family began planning their distillery. It took much planning, but in 2015 they found the future home of Copper Rivet Distillery and the Victorian Pump House No. 5 in Chatham Maritime was purchased. In 2016 they began distilling, but it wasn't until 2017 that they officially opened. On Friday 1st December, HRH The Princess Royal (the British Princess Anne) officially opened Copper Rivet Distillery in Chatham's Historic Docky. From that day they began selling exceptional whisky, gin and vodka. For all of their spirits, including their whiskys only the best early harvest wheat, barley and rye are selected to be used. These are all grown within 20 miles of their home in Chatham, working with known farmers. Their Column Malt Whisky is one of Britain’s first single malt whisky's to be distilled in a column still. For this they took inspiration from the Japanese and American distilleries. They use 100% Belgravia Barley which is grown at 40 acre field. Their mash has a long fermentation before its initial pot distillation. After this, there is a second distillation in the 10 meter tall column still. This unique column still creates a deliciously smooth, easy drinking whisky. The final stage is ageing in first full American Oak Bourbon Barrels. The resulting whisky has an intruiging balance of flavours. It has an aroma full of Vanilla mousse with candied zest, toffee apple and light oak shavings. Whilst on the palate there is a lingering sweet cream with dried plantain, fresh cut pear and a nutty, peppery finish. More from Copper Rivet Distillery Perfect Serve As with all whisky, it's best enjoyed how your palate prefers! We really enjoyed this sipped neat at room temperature.

Dictador Colombian Aged Gin Ortodoxy 70cl

Dictador Colombian Aged Gin Ortodoxy 70cl

Dictador Colombian Aged Gin Ortodoxy After many visits to London, where Dario Parra (former President of Dictador) enjoyed many Gin & Tonic's - he eventually returned to Colombia and decided he should create a Colombian Gin. Hence Ortodoxy was created. Perhaps unsurprisingly, bearing in mind Dictador is primarily a rum distillery, the base alcohol used in the production of Ortodoxy is from sugar cane. They distil each botanical seperately before they blend, and then age in oak barrels (previously used to hold their rum). This gin spends a luxurious thirty-five weeks in the barrels, before a multi stage filtration process is used to leave a crystal clear, deliciously flavoured gin. What we partocularly love about this gin is the mouth-feel. It feels thick, oily, and coats the mouth beautufully. This really helps to impart the flavours from the botanicals. On the nose this gin is quite complex. A hint of piney juniper, a freshness from mint leaves, and a sweetness from blueberries and citrus peel - all beautifully brought together with warming spice, ginger and cinnamon. It definitely entices you into tasting it! On the palate this is bursting with flavours, smooth and has a delicate berry sweetness. It is however definitely a dry gin. Juniper persists through the drink, but entices and doesnt overwhelm. Mid way through the citrus elements make themselves known along with hints of warm spices. The fruit sweetness comes through too - but certainly doesnt make this a sweet gin. Think tart, but ripe blueberries. It finishes with a touch of pepper, and ginger - which blend with a little orange - but still with the pine from the juniper.  Read more about Dictador Perfect Serve Deliciously smooth, and with a really nice mouthfeel - this can easily be enjoyed on the rocks garnished with a slice of lemon. But for a longer drink, mix with The Artisan Drinks Co. Indian Tonic. In a large glass add 50ml of gin, and pour over 150ml of the tonic. Stir gently, and garnish with a slice of lemon.
