Hooghoudt RAW Genever For their RAW Genever, Hooghoudt have combined four different malt spirits (3 individually distilled - barley, wheat, rye and the classic malt mix of wheat corn and rye), and blended this with a carefully selected selection of juniper (it is Genever!), herbs and spices. As this is a RAW genever, it is not aged in Oak barrels, which gives it the fresh character of a young genever. Unlike with gin, the alcohol base of malt is not just a carrier for the oils and spices - but also a flavour in itself of the genever itself - and adds a distinct flavour. The aroma of this genever has subtle grain notes, which are complemented with juniper, citrus and a herbal background. The flavour is again full of the grain used in its creation, with citrus, coriander and a mild touch of sweetness. Velverty in the mouth, and with a slight spice in the aftertaste. It also works really well in the mix - try with Three Cents tonic water, or for a citrus hit - with their pink grapefruit soda. For either, take a large glass and fill with ice. Add 50ml of the genever, and pour over 150 - 200ml of your chosen soda. Stir well, garnish with a slice of grapefruit and enjoy!
