They Are Billions is a steampunk real-time strategy game. The production was developed by Numantian Games studio, the authors of Lords of Xulima: A Story of Gods and Humans.
The action takes us to an alien planet, colonized long ago by humanity. This civilization was on the brink of extinction due to the outbreak of the zombie epidemic. Only a few thousand people survived and now have to find a way to survive in a world overrun by billions of dead worms.
Interestingly, the authors added a steampunk atmosphere to these typical science fiction and horror themes. Many technologies are based on steam engines and the level of cultural development corresponds to the Victorian era.
They Are Billions is a real-time strategy, but with an active pause option, allowing you to stop the action at any time and give your orders calmly. The gameplay itself differs from typical RTS games. We spend most of our time managing and developing the colony in the style known from economic strategies. It is therefore necessary to gather resources, construct and improve buildings, and create an energy network.
The gigantic hordes of zombies are a constant threat. The authors have developed their own engine that allows you to place up to twenty thousand units on the map, and each of them has its own artificial intelligence module. Thanks to this, nematodes can, among others, react to various visual and auditory stimuli, and after finding the bodies of their kin, they will try to find the culprits.
If even one zombie gets inside a building, it infects all of its inhabitants. The lack of a quick and decisive reaction will quickly turn the entire colony into a lair of living dead. To protect yourself from threats, it is necessary to build defensive structures, such as walls and turrets, as well as hire and train mercenaries able to fight deadlocks.
